<p>Deborah Barnett (born December 15, 1953) is a Canadian creative director, fine press printer, and graphic designer based in Toronto.<lb/><lb/>She attended high school at Central Technical School in Toronto and was accepted into the school’s art program, where she took an interest in sculpture and drawing. Shortly after graduating, she became a founding member of Dreadnaught Press, working first as an apprentice, and later as an art director. The fine press printing collective was well-known in the Canadian literary and publishing community, and served as a space for Barnett to hone her print, design, and typography skills.<lb/><lb/>Beginning in 1981, Barnett lectured at the annual Banff Publishing Workshop in Alberta for nearly a decade, teaching design, art direction, and colour theory. After Dreadnaught Press disbanded in the mid 1980s, she started her own commercial design studio under the name Dreadnaught Design. Clients included Price Waterhouse Cooper, The National Arts Centre, The National Ballet of Canada, the AIDS Committee of Toronto, and Reed Books Canada. In 2001, Dreadnaught Design became Someone.ca. Launched by Barnett and business partner Aaron Benson, Someone.ca specialized in website development, web design, and communications. During this time, Barnett also took on creative director roles for several large investment firms. She returned to more extensive fine press printing in 2010, collaborating on letterpress projects and creating custom materials for clients. In 2015, she launched Someone Editions, a specialty letterpress imprint in the spirit of Dreadnaught Press, alongside editor and poet Beatriz Hausner.<lb/><lb/>In 2018, Barnett took on the role of Master Printer at Kelly Library at St. Michael’s College, where she taught printing and typesetting workshops, and led production of a series of limited edition chapbooks for the Kelly Library Print Studio. In 2021, she earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Interdisciplinary Art, Media, and Design (IAMD) from OCAD University.<lb/><lb/>In 2024, Barnett launched an imprint of Someone Editions called the French Letter Society. For this project, Barnett designs, typesets, and prints broadsides comprised of creative work by various visual artists and poets, reviving the casual "kitchen table print" culture popularized by private presses and literary circles in the first half of the 20th century. In 2025, Barnett began making an active effort to turn her letterpress studio into a community space and salon for poetry readings, gallery openings, artists' alleys, print demonstrations, and workshops. Her book arts practice continues to evolve.</p>

<p>Dreadnaught Press was a Toronto printing collective and publisher. Dreadnaught Press was established in the mid 1970s with the intention of publishing poetry and excerpted literature using traditional fine press printing techniques. It was founded by Robert MacDonald, Elizabeth Abraham, Deborah Barnett, Ross MacDonald, and David Jang, and was the first incorporated worker co-operative in Canada. The press borrowed its name from *Dreadnaught*, a short-lived underground paper started by Robert MacDonald in the early 1970s, and was originally inspired by a passage from *Finnegan's Wake* by James Joyce.<lb/><lb/>The collective set up a working pressroom at 24 Sussex Ave., near the University of Toronto campus, where they composed, designed, typeset, and hand-printed materials using traditional letterpress equipment. Dreadnaught Press published the works of many Canadian poets and writers, including Margaret Atwood, A.F. Moritz, Marshall McLuhan, Susan Musgrave, and Jack Hannan, and worked with numerous designers, artists, editors, typesetters, and illustrators. Dreadnaught Press was part of a vibrant local printing community that developed in the Annex neighbourhood of Toronto in the 1970s, including neighbouring publishers Coach House Press and House of Anansi. In addition to their own projects, the collective completed commissioned design, typographic and printing work for a range of commercial clients.<lb/><lb/>Dreadnaught Press briefly expanded with a second shop (NovaDreadnaught) and handmade paper operation in Nova Scotia in the early 1980s, before disbanding altogether as founding members moved on to other endeavours. In the late 1980s, Deborah Barnett relaunched Dreadnaught as Dreadnaught Design, a design and communication firm that shifted primary focus away from hand-printing and took on larger scale projects for commercial clients.</p>

In addition to producing chapbooks (see Subseries 1), the Dreadnaught broadsides were a core part of the Press' publishing focus and demonstrate a range of letterpress techniques. The collective produced these materials for poems, images, ideas, and passages that personally resonated with its members. These prints are distinguished by the notation 'Dreadnaught Broadside', which appears somewhere on the page.<lb/><lb/>Over 90 different poems, passages, and quotations are featured in the subseries, and the majority of prints are single copies. <p>This series consists of letterpress-printed literary broadsides produced as part of the French Letter Society, a collective publishing initiative that supports emerging writers and artists. Each French Letter combines an original poem with a visual art insert and is issued as a folded print object enclosed in an envelope.<lb/><lb/>The series documents the production of contemporary fine press publications created using traditional letterpress printing methods. Each edition is designed, typeset, and printed by Deborah Barnett on a FAG Standard cylinder proof press at her studio in Toronto, Ontario. The publications are materially and conceptually influenced by the mail art movement.<lb/><lb/>In addition to the printed objects themselves, the series reflects the collaborative relationship between poets and visual artists and records the activities of Someone Editions as a contemporary book arts initiative. Each publication is folded and assembled in a communal space by volunteers and supporters of the press before being presented at a public launch event that brings together members of the literary and book arts communities.</p>

While Greckol's poetry brings us to face our manifest concerns for the environment, Moskwa's works draw on the whimsical nature of her Canadian childhood, while being inspired by Louise Bourgeois' spiders as a maternal archetype. For this project, she created over 100 individual works, each of them with a unique container for a surprise: a tiny 3D charm reminding us that we do not know the future. 'Prize Inside' incorporates materials that were within the artist's reach: clothing tags, vintage gift wrap from the sixties, postal receipts from parcels her parents sent to Ukraine in the 70s, vintage Laurentian pencil crayons, and handmade paper.</p>
