Frederick Ernest Joseph (F. E. J.) Fry, was an aquatic ecologist best known for his work in physiological ecology, which developed a new understanding of the activities of fish in relation to the physical and chemical environment.Fry was professor of zoology at the University of Toronto from 1936 to 1974. During the Second World War, from 1941 to 1945, he also did research in aviation medicine with the Ro​yal Canadian Air Force. In 1974, he was named professor emeritus and became an associate of the Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Toronto. In 1974, the Canadian Society of Zoologists established the Fry medal in recognition of his contribution to Canadian science.​

The Department of Physics carried out research for the Department of National Defence during World War II involving C313 demand valve. This apparatus produced in the Physics workshop is an early test model of the C313 demand valve. The serial # 1 of the assembly line further modified by the addition of an override to release oxygen continuously at altitude over 30,000 ft. No further models of this override were produced.
