        <p>Salus was born in Vienna, Austria in 1938, he pursued an edition in science (graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from New York University in 1960). He pursued a PhD at NYU in Linguistics, where he completed a thesis in 1963 titled "The Compound Noun in Indo-European: A Survey".<lb/><lb/>Over the next several years, he pursued an academic career at Queen's College (City University of New York) and the University of Massachusetts. During this time he also worked as a Linguistics Consultant for a publisher (Holt, Rinehart &amp; Winston), and worked on a translation of "Poetic Edda" with W.H. Auden.<lb/><lb/>In 1969, he came to the University of Toronto Scarborough (then Scarborough College) where he was the Chair of the Humanities Division and a Professor in the Linguistics Department.<lb/><lb/>In the 1970s he further developed an interest in Computing and Computer Languages, an area of study he pursued after leaving the University of Toronto, eventually writing several books on the history of computing and the Internet.</p>
