        <p>Bernhardt was educated at Orillia Collegiate, the University of Toronto (B.A., 1926 and M.A., 1929) and the University of Chicago (Ph.D., 1933). He was a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto (1943-1964), and assistant director (1936-1960) and then director of the Institute of Child Study (1960-1964). After his retirement in 1964, he was named professor emeritus and director emeritus.</p>
