Alfred Tennyson DeLury, mathematician and bibliophile, was born in Manilla, Ont., on May 13, 1864. He was educated at the University of Toronto, earning his B.A. in 1890 and his M.A. in 1902. In 1892, he was appointed a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Toronto. He became head of the department in 1919, and dean of the faculty of arts in 1922. He retired from the University in 1934. He was the author of several textbooks in algerbra and artithemetic, including An Algebra for High Schools and Collegiate Institutes and An Intermediate Algebra. As an avid collector of Irish Literature, he managed to acquaint himself with many of the leading characters of the Irish Literary Revival. He died in Lindsay, Ont., on November 12, 1951. After his death, his extensive collection of Irish literature came to the University of Toronto Library.

The DeLury collection contains correspondence with Anglo-Irish writers, with friends and with book dealers. It also contains card files and notebooks relating to his collection of Ango-Irish literature and a few diaries from the 1920s.
