Biographical history
Bruce West (1912-1990) is a Canadian columnist and author. Born in Huntsville, Ontario, West was hired by The Globe (later the Globe and Mail) in 1934. During the Second World War, West worked for the Wartime Information Board in Ottawa, London and Washington. After the war, West began writing a daily column for the Globe and Mail, which he continued for the next 25 years. He had a particular interest in Canadian and Toronto history and aviation, and wrote several books on the subjects, including A Change of Pace (1956), Toronto (1967), The Happy Gamble: The History of the Canadian national Sportsmen Show (1972), The Firebirds: How Bush Flying Won its Wings (1974) and the Man Who Flew Churchill (1975).

The collection consists of typescripts of West's two books, Toronto (1967, revised in 1979) and The Firebirds: An Account of the First Fifty Years of the Ontario Provincial Air Service (1974), along with photographs, galleys, editorial notes, newspaper clippings, articles and reports relating to the City of Toronto.
