Scope and content
This subseries consists of records related to the Society's successive Constitutions. The Constitutions express the Society's nature, purpose, and governance, as well as the rights and obligations of the members.
The Constitutions of 1984 arose from the need to re-write the Constitutions in light of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). The drafting process of the 1984 Constitutions documents the debates taking place in the wake of the Second Vatican Council, especially with regards to governance and the role of lay missioners within the Society.
Records include: drafts, translations of the Constitutions, correspondence with the Holy See and internally in the Society, research materials and reports. Subseries also includes copies of Circular Letters pertaining to the Constitutions, and documents prepared for the General Chapters where the Constitutions were discussed and amended.
