Scope and content

Series primarily consists of Bolton’s personal and professional correspondence as well as reference letters written for students and colleagues; the series is sub-divided into two sections accordingly. Files within the personal and professional correspondence section are generally arranged alphabetically by last name or subject. File titles typically reflect the correspondent, but they can also include correspondence that is about or related to the named individual.

Records document exchanges between Bolton and friends, family, students, colleagues, publishers, and members of the general public. The bulk of the correspondence documents scholarly discussion between Bolton, his colleagues, students, and astronomers from institutions around the world. The topics of discussion often relate to Bolton’s research projects, involvement with astronomical societies, or the preparation of manuscripts for publication. Many files include the exchange of various types of research data, publications, and drafts of reports, manuscripts, and abstracts.

There is also one file which contains correspondence between Bolton and Michael Fieldus’ family related to the Michael S. Fieldus Award and Bolton’s attempt to get Fieldus’ Ph.D. awarded posthumously. Personal correspondence and cards from friends and family are intermixed with the professional correspondence.

Reference letters and student evaluations for award and graduate school applications are located at the end of the series. These files are arranged alphabetically by last name.
