        History

Beatrice Marion Corrigan was born in Toronto in 1903 and remained there for the greater part of her life. After attending elementary school at Branksome Hall, she went on to a B.A. (Toronto, 1927) and an M.A. (Toronto, 1929), finally attaining a doctorate in 1932, the first to be conferred in Romance Languages at the University of Toronto.

In 1946, Corrigan joined the staff of the Italian Department, having spent the intervening years elsewhere, and for the next thirty years, was deeply involved in the teaching of Italian language and literature.

Upon retirement in 1971, she was named Professor Emeritus and appointed Co-ordinating Editor of the Works of Erasmus in Translation. The volumes published before her death on January 4, 1977 were universally praised.

Many honours were bestowed upon Professor Corrigan; a Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada (1964), a D. Litt. from the University of Waterloo (1966) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto in 1972 were the top honours in a long list.
