It was established in 1964 by the Swedish Radio under Karl Birger Blomdahl and director Knut Wiggen. Following Blomdahl's death in 1968 the Studio became an independent organization, funded by the Swedish Radio, Fylkingen, and the Swedish Royal Academy of Music.
