History
Dr. Freda Hawkins (1918 - 1997), Professor Emeritus, was a political scientist and specialist in immigration and international migration. Immigrating from Britain to Canada in 1955, she received her Ph.D. (1969) from UofT’s Department of Political Economy, and taught at the institution until her retirement in 1984.
Dr. Hawkins was one of the first academics to give serious study to immigration policy and management in Canada. Her published work, in particular Canada and Immigration: Public Policy and Public Concern, was considered to have significant impact within academia and beyond. Throughout her career, she acted as an advisor to various government bodies relating to matters of immigration.
