Biographical history
Henry Grattan Tyrrell, born in 1867, graduated from the School of Practical Science, University of Toronto, in 1886. He worked on a survey crew in Quebec and Maine for a branch of the CPR between 1886-88. He later gained experience as a civil engineer for a variety of firms in the United States and constructed several notable bridges. In 1915, he set up the Tyrrell Engineering Company in Detroit, and later established offices in New York and Washington. He published a number of books and pamphlets on engineering, concentrating on the construction of bridges, mills and factories. He died in 1948.
Archival history
Immediate source of acquisition or transfer
Part of the collection was given to the Library by Tyrrell's son, William Bryan Tyrrell, in 1966. Some family correspondence came with the J.B. Tyrrell Papers given to the Library in 1959. The bulk of the collection is the gift of H.G. Tyrrell's son, Henry Grattan Knox Tyrrell, from 1976-1980.

Scope and content
The collection consists of notes and typescripts for Tyrrell's industrial engineering works and for his books on bridge design. It also includes family correspondence, personal diaries, scrapbooks and some family photographs. Papers of Tyrrell's youngest son, William Tyrrell, are also included.
