January Accession, Boxes 1-9:

A collection of papers relating to the edition and publication of Descant, issues 111-115 (2000-2001). Includes author correspondence, manuscripts, proofs, production files, editorial correspondence and notes, subscription lists, and distribution files. Also includes materials relating to Mulhallens trip to Hungary in 2000, a manuscript of Stan Jonnanesen's "Sister Patsy", author photographs for use in Paper Guitar, a proof of the Descant index, donor files, photographs of events, and magnetic tape backups of computer files (issues 88-99 with gaps).

April-May Accession, Boxes 10-16:

Manuscripts and background materials for Mulhallen's War Surgery (1996), and materials for Descant 113-116, including author correspondence, manuscripts and editorial files.

June Accession, Boxes 17-23:

Manuscripts, correspondence, notes, and background materials relating to Mulhallen's writings, including The Grace of Private Passage, individual poems, essays, reviews, juvenalia, and other writing. Also includes a collection of her printed appearances 1960-2002.

Includes interviews and correspondence with prominent Canadian authors, as well as notes and biographical information on them. Also includes correspondence, manuscripts and other editorial papers stemming from her work as an editor at Somerville House, and as editor-in-chief of Descant; drafts, notes and correspondence relating to her literary works.

Karen Mulhallen Papers

This latest accession of Karen Mulhallen’s papers includes editorial material – primarily manuscripts, proofs and correspondence – for issues 144, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 162, 163, 165, 166 and 167of the literary journal Descant. Also included are submissions and rejections to Descant, and general administration files including staff and hiring, financials, correspondence, fundraising, subscriptions and events. There are also files related to the Winston Collins Poetry Prize and Writers’ Reserve competitions, as well as administrative files from Now Hear This! (NHT!) and Students, Writers and Teachers Programs (SWAT), which were charitable organizations created by Descant to improve literacy in Toronto-area schools. The collection also contains some of Mulhallen’s personal and professional files related to her academic and writing career.

Karen Mulhallen Papers

This latest accession of Karen Mulhallen’s papers consists of both Descant materials – manuscripts, correspondence and proofs, as well as Mulhallen’s own files for the literary journal – and papers pertaining to Mulhallen’s literary work, including the book Acquainted with Absence: Selected Poems (published by Blaurock Press, 2009) along with other Mulhallen books. It also includes material for an Open Radio program developed by Mulhallen called Tale and the Teller, as well as correspondence, files relating to her various archival and book donations, and various academic materials, primarily lecture notes for courses she taught at Ryerson.

1999 Accession:

A collection of draft manuscripts, notes and correspondence pertaining to her book, In The Era of Acid Rain, Windsor, Ont. : Black Moss Press, 1993. Also includes correspondence with Virgil Burnett, a draft of Simon Louvich's "Cosmic Follies", and galleys and rejected submissions for Descant.

2000 Accession: Materials relating to the editing and publication of Descant, the literary journal edited by Karen Mulhallen. Includes author correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, drawings, proofs, cover proofs, promotional materials, and financial and administrative documents (1989-2000). Also included are material pertaining to other editing work Mulhallen has done, manuscripts, proofs, notes and correspondence pertaining to her book The Grace of Private Passage. Windsor, Ont.: Black Moss Press, 2000, and gifts to her.

2001 Accession:

Materials relating to the editing and publication of Descant, 1987-2001. Includes author correspondence, manuscripts, manuscripts on diskettes, proofs, production and research notes, and office, subscription and distribution documents.

Consists of manuscripts, general correspondence, and various papers relating to Descant magazine. The gift also consists of some of Mulhallen's professional and personal correspondence. Also included are correspondence and manuscripts relating to Modern Love, Herm on Tour, War Surgery and In The Era of Acid Rain.

This collection consists primarily of material related to the production of Descant, the literary journal edited by Karen Mulhallen, as well as some of Mulhallen's personal papers. The Descant papers include original manuscripts, correspondence, copy edits, typeset galleys and office administration files.

Karen Mulhallen Papers

Collection consists of editorial material - including manuscripts, page proofs and correspondence - for issues of the Mulhallen-edited literary journal Descant (nos. 133-136), as well as manuscripts and other materials of Mulhallen's own literary output. It includes a Renga Talk written in collaboration with artist Virgil Burnett, and material related to her book Sea Horses (Black Moss Press, 2007). The remainder of the collection is research and lecture notes, both for courses taken by Mulhallen when she was a student at the University of Toronto and for her own lectures at Ryerson University, as well as other personal and miscellaneous materials.
