Musical Performance and Communication Programme

This was a programme founded and directed by Prof. Schabas from 1986 to 1990 at the Faculty of Music. The programme was funded by the federal Employment Immigration Canada and Ontario Arts Council through the University of Toronto. It was "a unique programme (7 terms varying from 3 to 6 months each) to help professional musicians to develop effective musical and administrative out-reach procedures in communities."

The records in this subseries consist of administrative files relating to the programme including field trips, educational programmes, student applications and files, staff files, brochures and pamphlets, press clippings, schedules,and finances.

This sub-series also includes photographs of students, field trips and courses. In-class and public concerts as well as field trips to public schools were documented on 8 mm video tape.

Fonds documents Prof. Schabas' forty year career as teacher, administrator, and consultant with the Royal Conservatory of Music and the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, and his numerous external activities as consultant, juror, examiner, and as member in various professional and government organizations devoted to the promotion of the education and professional development of musicians in Canada and abroad.

The arrangement of this accession reflects Prof. Schabas' long association with the Royal Conservatory of Music and is divided into two Sous Fonds:

A later accession (B2008-0031, now described as Series 10 within Sous-fonds 2) is an accrual to the Ezra Schabas fonds. It consists of an alphabetical file series that documents most facets of Prof. Ezra Schabas’ career. While there are a few early records, most files document his activities after his retirement from the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, including: involvement in associations and music groups, publishing and research endeavours including his book Sir Ernest MacMillan: The Importance of Being Canadian; evaluation reports of music programs throughout Canada; performances and public appearances; travels; workshops and talks. The files contain a variety of documents including correspondence, minutes, agenda, papers, talks, reviews, evaluation reports, scripts, grant applications and memorabilia. 1953-2007 (predominant 1985-2002)

Ezra Schabas personal records

Contains personal and professional correspondence, records of professional associations and consultative work, as well as teaching materials and lectures. His particular expertise in musical education and in particular, orchestras, resulted in him being commissioned by both private and public sector bodies to undertake studies and prepare reports. Many of these were published and led to developments in both these areas. Also included in this accession are manuscripts of addresses, articles and one book entitled Theodore Thomas: America's conductor and builder of orchestras 1835-1905, (University of Illinois Press, 1989).

This series consists of the entire second accession (B2008-0031), which consists of an alphabetical file series that documents most facets of Prof. Ezra Schabas’ career. Sound recordings

This series is comprised of sound recordings from various sources, some of which relate to specific series. Included are talks at conferences, radio interviews Schabas gave about the Royal Conservatory and the Music Performance and Communication Programme (MPC), some original acoustical recordings of Schabas and radio programmes about Schabas and his work. Studies and reports

During his career, Prof. Schabas has been commissioned as a consultant and advisor by a number of organizations both in Canada and abroad. The files in this series contain correspondence, manuscripts of reports and final copies of reports, research materials, etc relating to these activities. Included are, among others, the Manhattan School of Music (1989-1991), Music at the University of New Brunswick study (1988-1990), Trinidad and Tobago National Music School (1975-1976), University Settlement Recreation Centre, Toronto (1983-1986).

Ontario Arts Council

Prof. Schabas has been involved with the Ontario Arts Council since the mid 1960's when he was commissioned to write a report on "Ontario Community Orchestras" (1966) which became a blueprint for developing 40 professional and amateur orchestras in Ontario. This series of correspondence, minutes, notes, and reports documents these activities. Included are records on the OAC's Advisory Committee on Touring which resulted in the report "Touring in Ontario" with David Silcox, William Wylie, and Reva Gerstein and led to the formation of the Council's Touring Office; and a copy of "Choral Music in Ontario" with Keith Bissell, which led to the formation of the Ontario Choral Federation, Ontario Youth Choir and annual province-wide 'Choirs in Contact'.

Association of Colleges and Conservatories of Music

Prof. Schabas was a founding member and the first president of the ACCM from 1980-1984. This series contains files relating to its conferences in Toronto (1980), Banff (1981), Quebec (1982), and one file of general correspondence, notes,and reports (1982-1989).
