Audio recordings

Series consists of audio recordings of works by Talivaldis Kenins, including some recordings of performances conducted by Kenins and some world premieres. Many of the recordings were made for CBC broadcast. Others were performed at the University of Toronto. The series also includes three audio cassettes from a 1996 program on CJRT-FM that featured an interview with Kenins interspersed with recordings of his compositions, and recordings of Kenins' son George Juris Kenins performing the cello.

Kenins retrospective no. 4 : CJRT-FM

File is an audio recording of a radio program, produced by Alex Baran and David Olds for CJRT-FM. This program contains clips from an interview with Kenins as well as some musical excerpts, including: Concertino barocco, performed by Andris Pauls and Aida Grieze; Symphony no. 4, performed by the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra, conducted by John Avison; Violin Concerto, performed by Steven Staryk and the CBC Vancouver Chamber Orchestra, conducted by John Avison; Nonet: L'ultima sinfonia, performed by Peteri Plakidis, Andris Pauls, Inese Milzaraja, Olafs Stals, Ivars Bezprozvianovs, Andris Grunte, Uldis Lipskip, Normunds Sne, and Arvids Klisans; and, John Bayless, Improvisation on Happy Birthday in the Style of Bach's Prelude no. 1 in C Major from the Well Tempered Klavier.

This program contains clips from an interview with Kenins as well as some musical excerpts, including: Chaconne for solo violin, performed by Rasme Lielmane; Symphony no. 7, performed by Leli Tammele and the Latvian Music Academy, conducted by Imants Resnis; Violin sonata no. 2, performed by Rasme Lielmane and Ventis Zilberts; Cantabile for Strings, performed by the Riga Philharmonic, conducted by Kriss Rusmanis; and, Sonata for 2 pianos, performed by Antra and Normunds Viksne.

File is an audio reel that is labelled as a performance of Beatae voces tenebrae by the CBC Winnipeg Orchestra, conducted by Boris Brott (May 24, 1978), but the box is labelled differently (see item-level descriptions).

Recording of George B. Kenins and Babby

File is an audio reel with recordings of Sonata op. 58 in D for cello and piano by Mendelssohn; Concerto in A minor for cello and string orchestra by Vivaldi; and Allegro Appassionato for cello by Saint-Saens. A note on the cover reads: "Solo cellist in this recording is George B. Kenins and Babby is the accompanist. Both play somewhat miserably because of a combination of over- and underwork, as this is the third day after the Grade 10 examination (May 24, 1969)."

File includes the following by Talivaldis Kenins (as well as other works by other Latvian-Canadian composers): Sonata no. 2 for violin and piano; Folk song and variations for trumpet and piano; Festival fanfares for brass ensemble; Songs of youth for mixed choir (Latvian folk music); and the Concerto da Camera no. 1 (world premiere). The festival took place in MacMillan Theatre, Edward Johnson Building, University of Toronto.
