Collection contains ephemera related to education in Ontario. This ephemera includes materials such as educational certificates, grade reports, teaching applications, contracts, meeting minutes, school accounts, student rolls, correspondence, inspection reports, examination papers and timetables, insurance policies, student assignments and workbooks, and class photographs.

This collection has been arranged into 9 series.

OISE Library

Certificates

Series contains educational certificates, including certificates for passing entrance exams, grade promotion certificates, graduation certificates, teaching certifications, and grade reports.

Rosa Deroche

File contains a Second Class teaching certificate dated 7 May 1861, qualifying Rosa Deroche to teach in the United counties of Frontenac and Lennox and Addington.

File also contains a brief biography of Rosa Deroche and two letters from the donor.

George Malcolm

File contains an Ontario Normal School Certificate of Attendance and Aptitude to Teach, issued to George Malcolm on January 15, 1872. This certificate functioned as a Second Class teaching certificate.

File also contains two scraps of paper with notes pertaining to this certificate.

Helen Butters

File contains a certificate issued to Helen Burns by the Public School Board of Niagara Falls in June 1882, certifying that she had passed the high school entrance exam.

Agnes J. Bell

File contains a monthly report card for Agnes Bell, detailing the grades received at the Elora Public School as a pupil in the Senior III class, from January-May 1897.

George S. Lucas

File contains 2 middle school examination reports, issued in June 1927 and June 1928, and 2 upper school examination reports, issued in June 1928 and June 1929, all of which detail grades received.

File contains three handwritten contracts between Mary W. Lamb and the Public School Trustees of Section No. Six in the Township of Warwick in the County of Lambton, signed December 14, 1875, December 18, 1876, and August 20, 1877.

Contract for Janitorial Services

File contains a handwritten contract between the trustees of the Watford Public School and Thomas Malone for janitorial services in 1900. Duties included general care of the school and its grounds, removing snow and ice during the winter, and ensuring an adequate supply of wood and attending to the school's furnace.

Class Card - Western University

File contains an undated class card from Western University. The card most likely dates from between 1878 (when the Western University of London Ontario was established) and 1923 (when the university was renamed the University of Western Ontario).

Letter by a School Master

File contains a letter written by a school master in 1826 describing the troubles of early school life.

File also contains a transcription of the letter created in 1957.

Frank Sampson

File contains three certificates issued to Frank Sampson:

1) A Certificate of Merit issued by the City of Toronto Public Schools in June 1892, for proficiency in the combined examination of public school pupils;
2) A certificate from the Collegiate Institutes and High Schools of Ontario, issued in July 1893, certifying that Frank Sampson had passed the entrance exam; and
3) A certificate issued by the Trustees of the Collegiate Institutes of the City of Toronto on 20 July 1893, awarding Frank Sampson a scholarship for two years of free study.

John L. Sharp

File contains a certificate issued July 14, 1906, certifying that John L. Sharp had passed the entrance examination to enroll in a collegiate institute, high school, or continuation school.

John M. Corkindale

File contains a certificate issued September 1, 1917, attesting that John M. Corkindale had completed the requirements (i.e. passed the entrance examination) to enroll in a collegiate institute, high school, or continuation school.

James E. Burchell

File contains a letter to a public school trustee of the Township of Marlborough applying to a teaching position. The trustee's response was written on the reverse of the page.

Martha Corry

File contains two handwritten teaching contracts between Martha Corry and the Public School Trustees of Section No. Six in the Township of Warwick in the County of Lambton, signed November 2, 1875 and December 18, 1876.

William Johnston

File contains a teaching contract between William Johnston and the Trustees of School Section No. Six in the Township of Warwick and Village of Watford, signed November 2, 1875.
