Collection consists of materials relating to musical life in Toronto, Ontario. The collection includes photographs of various Canadian and European musicians, including various photographs of Canadian Opera Company productions from the late 1980s and early 1990s, autographs from various opera singers and musicians from the late-nineteenth century, three scrapbooks with newspaper clippings and programs, and a collection of songs published in the Toronto Evening Telegram at the end of the nineteenth century.

Godfrey Ridout

File consists of programs that included performances of pieces by Godfrey Ridout and copies of newspaper clippings about Ridout. Ridout (1918-1984) began teaching at the Toronto Conservatory of Music in 1940, before joining the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto (1948-1982).

Photographs of Canadian musicians

File contains photographs of Canadian musicians, many of which are signed, and most of which are not dated: S. C. Eckhardt-Gramatté with string quartet including Peggie Sampson and Victor Feldbrill; Herman Geiger-Torel; Irene Jessner; Greta Kraus; Sir Ernest MacMillan; Lois Marshall (2 photographs); Oskar Morawetz; Charles Peaker; and Redferne Hollinshead.

Scrapbook compiled by Milton Blankstein

File consists of a scrapbook compiled by the Milton Blankstein (later, Blackstone), consisting of newspaper clippings of reviews and press notices, photographs, and programs relating to his career in New York City, Toronto, and other Canadian cities. The scrapbook includes a signed photograph of Eugène Ysaÿe and and Boris Hambourg (dated in Toronto, 1918).

File consists of correspondence sent to Harvey Olnick from Elizabeth Hazelton Haight, Anton Kuerti, Claude Bissell, R. Murray Schafer, Robert Aitken, and Harry Somers.

Item is a publicity photograph of the American-Israeli violinist Itzhak Perlman, taken by Christian Steiner and distributed by ICM Artists Ltd., New York.

Luigi von Kunits

File consists of a photograph of Luigi von Kunits by the Van Eeden Studio (Toronto) and a photograph of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with von Kunits conducting (ca. 1923-1931). The file also contains the following score:

  • Souvenir de Moscou : op. 6 : for violin and piano by Henri Wieniawski (Braunschweig: Henry Litolff's Verlag, [191-?]), with annotations and autograph by Kunits
  • Kunits' cadenza to Brahms' Violin Concerto, op. 77 (handwritten, "property of [Eugene] Kash")
  • Popular Songs : transcription by Kunits (containing "Scenes that are brightest"from Maritana by W.V. Wallace, transcribed for [solo violin?] and piano).

Jan Matejcek

File consists of correspondence between Oskar Morawetz (1917-2007) and Jan Matejcek (1926-2017), including correspondence regarding the 1994 SOCAN award; an audio recording of immigration discussions between Morawetz and Matejcek; recordings of performances of Zpěv naděje (Singing of hope) and Symfonietta-chvalozpěv (Sinfonietta-hymn) by Jan Hanuš; Matejcek’s compilation of Morawetz’s jokes from conversations and lectures; and, Matejcek’s history of BMI Canada Ltd. and PROCAN (Performing Rights Organization of Canada). File also contains a transcripts from radio broadcasts on the Czech composer Alois Hába, from Devega Edizioni Musicali.

Arthur E. Fisher

File consists of a booklet on Arthur E. Fisher, including details from his Curriculum Vitae, a biography (written June 1896), samples of his musical compositions, extracts of articles written by Fisher, press notices, and a photograph of his studio.

Scrapbook compiled by Amoï Bird

File consists of a scrapbook compiled by Amoï Bird (1902-1988), containing programs and newspaper clippings of reviews from various concerts, the vast majority of which took place in Toronto. Bird attended the Bishop Strachan School in Toronto, before studying music with Dr. Albert Ham. The file includes a brief biographical note about Bird by Godfrey Ridout.

Royal Opera, Covent Garden : programme

File contains a souvenir, silk program from a gala performance by command of His Majesty the King in honour of the visit of the President of the French Republic. The concert featured the following soloists: Luisa Tetrazzini (Italian coloratura soprano), Caroline Hatchard (British soprano), John McCormack (Irish tenor), and Nellie Melba (Australian soprano).

Photographs of non-Canadian musicians

File contains autographed photographs of the following European musicians: Malwine Brée, Franz Léhar, Theodor Leschetizky, I. J. Paderewski, Hans Pfitzner, and Victoria de los Angeles. File also contains two autographed promotional photographs taken by Eric Hayes of the Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar. Shankar's photographs are not dated.

James Paton Clarke

File consists of correspondence between Helmut Kallman and Ethelwyn Harlow (University Archivist) regarding Kallman's research and subsequent article on James Paton Clarke (1807 or 1808 to 1881), written for The Dictionary of Canadian Biography/Dictionnaire biographique du Canada (DCB).
