Fonds consists of the compositions, recordings, and papers of Derek Holman, a former professor at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. The fonds contains manuscript scores and parts by Derek Holman, including original compositions, arrangements and realizations, juvenilia, and sketch materials; audio and video recordings of Holman’s compositions and performances; papers and photographs from Holman’s work with various choirs and churches (including at the University of London, University of Toronto, University of Trinity College, Bishop-Strachan, Royal School of Church Music, St. Simon’s, Concord Singers, Croydon Bach Society, Grace Church-on-the-Hill, and the Canadian Children’s Opera Company); and, Holman’s personal papers, including awards, certificates, degrees, and notebooks.

Recordings

Series consists of audio and video recordings of performances by Derek Holman and the choirs that he conducted (including the Choir of Grace Church-on-the-hill, Church of St. Simon the Apostle, and the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus), and recordings of performances of Derek Holman’s compositions.

St. John Passion : Croydon Parish Church

File is a recording of the first performance by the Croydon Bach Society of the St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach, conducted by Derek Holman and recorded by Geoffrey Bartlett. Principal singers were Patricia Andrew, Paula Gladwell, Roger Norrington, David Price, Richard Standen, and Christopher Keyte. Orchestra led by Ralph Nicholson with Guyon Wells, organ and Richard Popplewell, continuo.

Festival singers

Noye's fludde and the one hundredth anniversary of Grace Church-on-the-hill

File contains a recording of a performance of Noye's Fludde, the one-act opera by Benjamin Britten. The performance of Noye's Fludde (Noah's Flood) was part of the centennial celebrations at Grace Church on-the-Hill, directed by Brenda Robertson Davies with Derek Holman, musical director, and Bruce Ubukata, assistant musical director.

File consists of a recording of John Holman's cantata Homage to John Aubrey (with text from Aubrey's Brief Lives) which was commissioned by Massey College for performance at Massey College Gaudy Night in honour of Christmas. The performance was conducted by the composer.

B.J. Law : performance of Samson at the National Arts Centre

File contains a recording of Samson and Delilah by Camille Saint-Saëns at the National Arts Centre with Maureen Forrester, John Mitcheson[?], Gary Relyea, and Tim Cruickshank, and the Ottawa Choral Society and Cantata Singers. Brian Law was the conductor of the Cantata Singers of Ottawa from 1965 to 1987 an the conductor of the Ottawa Choral Society from 1967 until 1991.
