Reading notes and sources on religion and psychology

File consists of a bound volume of handwritten lecture notes by Nouwen as well as typed notes and source articles.
Materials in this bound volume relevant to Nouwen's 1966 and 1967 Psychology of Religion courses include:

File consists of a bound volume of typed and photocopied handouts which Nouwen distributed to participants of his Hospitality seminar. This file is volume I of II, of which handouts 1-11 are included. This volume also contains the table of contents for both volumes. The handouts include a course outline, a bibliography compiled by Nouwen and Walter Gaffney, as well as typed summaries of guest speakers. File also includes an unbound photocopied handout labelled "H3" which is titled "Hospitality and Hostility."

Handouts for spring 1973 research seminar

File consists of a bound volume of handwritten, typed, and photocopied handouts which Nouwen distributed to participants of his Hospitality seminar. This file is volume II of II, of which handouts 12-36 are bound. The handouts include typed summaries of class lectures, photocopied articles, as well as summaries of student projects. Included in the handouts are also handwritten and typed notes by Nouwen titled "Theol. Reflexion". The final handout is a typed critique of the class and its success dated April 30,1973. The author is unknown.

Lecture notes for fall 1973 lecture course

File consists of a bound volume of typed, handwritten and annotated lecture notes by Nouwen for Discipline and Discipleship, held during the fall semester of 1973. This bound copy is volume II of II.
The file also consists of a letter dated April 25, 1973 from Walter L. Parr, Jr. regarding papers by Nouwen which he received from Gary Cash. The papers he comments on appear to have been the articles Nouwen distributed to this class, and articles which Nouwen hoped to develop into a book (most likely 'Reaching Out'). Parr mentions Nouwen's themes of "oneness", "unity", "waiting" and eschatology.

Reading notes on memory

File consists of 10 pages of typed reading notes by Nouwen on the subject of memory. These reading notes appear to have been drawn from a number of sources such as Dahl, Elie Wiesel, Seward Hiltner, Abraham J. Heschel and Martin Francis.
These reading notes appear to be in their original file. The file folder is labelled "Nouwen: Notes and Excerpts. Ref. Memory". The notes also contain a page titled "Confessing faith in God today. Draft report of the July Consultation: Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research". It appears that Nouwen would have produced these resource files in the course of his research and later the bulk of material would have been collated and bound into single volumes. The theme of memory was integrated into Nouwen's 1975 and 1977 courses Ministry and Spirituality.

Articles for course on Prison Ministry

File consists of six articles by Morris M. Gondereau, Joseph Sattern and Karl Menninger. There is also a reading list for the course. These articles are part of a bound volume of collected materials.

Lecture notes and reading notes for spring 1975 seminar

File consists of a bound volume of typed and handwritten lecture notes and reading notes by Nouwen. There is only two pages of typed lecture notes. The rest of the bound volume consists of handwritten reading notes or lecture notes by Nouwen which are heavily annotated. The reading notes covers works by Michael Novak, David Steindl-Rast, Anselmus Stolz, Diadoque de Photice, James Hannay, St. Benedict, and Thomas Merton.

File consists of a bound volume of typed and photocopied handouts for a field-based course called Ministry in Non-Religious Institutions. This is volume II of II, of which handouts 22-45 are included. There are a significant amount of article handouts by Nouwen in this volume, all of which were later published. They are:

-"Compassion: a study inspired by the life and the works of Vincent Van Gogh." This article is dated December 16 - January 3 1975-76 and the location is typed as "Geijsteren Holland".

Reading notes for the summer of 1977

File consists of a bound volume of handwritten reading notes by Nouwen created during the summer months of 1977, many of which were written during Nouwen's Pendle Hill retreat from June 26 to July 1. Many of the reading notes are dated, and cover works by Max Frisch, William A. Barry SJ, John Howard Yoder, R.P. Martin, Parker Palmer, Thomas Hora, Kai Erikson, Margaret Lewis Furse, Gerard Dekker, Jacques Ellul, Saint Seaphim of Sarov, Gene K. Hoffman, Kenneth Wooden, Gerard Egan and Michael Cowan, Basil Pennington, Archimandrite Sophrony, Kalistos Ware, Saint Alban and St. Sergius. There are four pages of reading notes that are written on the back of a letter from Parker Palmer to Nouwen outlining the schedule of the Pendle Hill retreat. There is also a heavily annotated draft of a course syllabus for the fall 1977 lecture course Compassion. There are also eight handwritten pages of sermon notes for the Mercy Center for the dates June 6, to June 20.

File consists of a bound volume of handwritten and typed lecture notes by Nouwen as well as typed and photocopied articles and handouts, including a syllabus and class list. Many of these lecture notes are dated. Bound volume contains two typed class presentations by two students in the seminar, as well as a list of final paper topics for the seminar and a published article by Nouwen, "Compassion: Solidarity, Consolation and Comfort" which appeared in an issue of America (13 March, 1976:195-200). There is also an eight page typed article by Melanie Morrison titled "Beyond a Problem Solving Approach to Ministry".

Lecture notes for fall 1977 lecture course

File consists of a bound volume of typed and handwritten lecture notes, including a syllabus. Many of the typed and handwritten lecture notes by Nouwen are heavily annotated. There are also a number of handwritten reading notes by Nouwen and several "summary statements" by Gregory Youngchild reporting to Nouwen the general character of the students' reflection papers. There are two letters bound into this volume both relating to the course.

Reading notes on Vincent van Gogh: Paris - Auvers

File consists of a bound volume of handwritten reading notes by Nouwen on Vincent van Gogh. This is volume II of IV. Nouwen has designated this volume as "Paris- Auvers". These handwritten reading notes consist of detailed biographical notes of van Gogh's artistic and spiritual experiences of the years 1886-1889. Nouwen appears to have organised references in van Gogh's correspondence under subject headings such as "God", "Moods", "Painting", "Solidarity", etc.

Reading notes on Vincent van Gogh : Vincent's Religious Development

File consists of a bound volume of handwritten reading notes by Nouwen on Vincent van Gogh. This is volume III of IV. Nouwen has designated this volume as "Vincent's Religious Development". These handwritten reading notes consist of detailed biographical notes of van Gogh's artistic and spiritual experiences from August 1872 to April 1881. Nouwen appears to have organised references in van Gogh's correspondence under headings such as "Passion", "Vocation", "Depression", "Father/Mother", etc.

Handouts for spring 1980 lecture course

File consists of a bound volume of typed and photocopied handouts (including a syllabus and class list) for the lecture course. The table of contents listing 36 items, and records the date that the items were distributed to the class. In addition to a directory of local monasteries and contemplative centers, a bibliography on western mysticism, a statement from the Community Life Committee concerning inclusive language, a list of final paper topics and a list of students owing Nouwen money or assignments, there are a number of typed and photocopied articles by Nouwen.
