Abbey of the Genesee file

File consists of twelve letters from Brother Christian at the Abbey of the Genesee between 1982 and 1996, predominantly 1982-1985. File also contains a photograph and copies of two articles with one of the articles referring to Nouwen's death.

Art/artists - Resources file

File consists of two copies of Rembrandt’s self-portrait, a Spring 1989 newsletter from The Pierpont Morgan Library with an article mentioning Rembrandt and a guide to the Rembrandt exhibit at the Rijksmuseum with a small print of the Rembrandt's Prodigal Son. Also included is a postcard depicting "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee" by Rembrandt and a slide featuring the same painting.

File also consists of an article about an art installation titled "Celestial Vault at Kijkduin" by James Turrell. This was an installation in the dunes near The Hague, created by Turrell (an American artist). There is also an article titled "Een cilinder vol zeegeruis" by Jan Wolkers, a Dutch author and artist.

Assorted blank postcards

File consists of various blank postcards. Subjects include churches and cloisters, landscapes, and some church figures. Included are postcards from Austria, Germany, New York City, Jerusalem, Israel, photograph postcards of the S.S. Maasdam ship of the Holland America Line, and Rome.

Assorted prints, postcards, greeting cards

File consists of various reproduction prints, blank postcards and greeting cards. These prints, postcards, and cards, include mostly religious images, but also a few geographical images. File includes some of the following:

  • one black and white print of a drawing of Jesus wearing the crown of thorns
  • one colour print of a painting with four women dressed in white. Annotation on back of print in unknown hand: "Four Women Martyrs by Sr. Marion Honors. in honor of the women who gave their lives in El Salvador."
  • one black and white photograph (13.9 cm x 9.0 cm) of an unknown priest. Annotation on back of photograph: "file: photos"
  • fifteen copies of the Trinity Icon, with no annotations
  • 1 box set containing 48 reprints of etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn [etchings are numbered and are out of order]

Because there are several copies of some of these prints, it is possible that Nouwen intended to send some of these with correspondence.

August 1985

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's participation in August Desert Wilderness, an event protesting nuclear testing, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Includes a copy of a letter from Jim Antal to Anne Bucher and a letter from Jim to Nouwen regarding the event. Nouwen gave a talk on August 6th. Also includes a pamphlet about the event, a postcard, and photograph of Jim and family.

Black and white photographs

File consists of five black and white photographs, likely taken in Europe. Contents of photographs are as follows:
P3591 - Two ships in a harbour
P3592 - A streetlight, with several rooftops in the background, and the steeple of a church
P3593 - A winter scene of a tree with a bench beneath it and a pond or small lake beyond. Everything is blanketed in snow
P3594 - A woman, in a crowd of people, holding a gray cat over her shoulder. She is smiling
P3595 - A woman in a fur coat standing with and smiling at two children, one a little girl holding a doll, and the other an older boy. A bicycle is near them. They appear to be standing against a barricade. There is a police officer right behind them, two police men standing against a doorway, and three policemen chatting in a group in another doorway.

Chicago Sunday Evening Club - September 29, 1991

File consists of correspondence and other material from David Hardin, regarding Nouwen's appearance on the Chicago Sunday Evening Club. Includes letters between Connie and Hardin making the arrangements for Nouwen's trip to Chicago. Includes Chicago Sunday Evening Club Annual Report 1989-90, newsletters, travel itinerary, airline tickets, and a speaker's information brochure. Includes a photograph of Don O'Neill who picked Nouwen up from the airport. Also includes a letter from Nouwen reflecting on his performance. A videocassette of his performance was sent to Nouwen by Hardin.

Christ the Redeemer

File consists of 1 slide featuring an icon by Andrei Rublev, titled "Christ the Redeemer" or "Le Sauveur" ["The Saviour"]. The icon features Jesus Christ. The actual icon is damaged, and was a fresco, possibly painted by Rublev in the 1420s for one of Zvenigorod cathedrals. The icon is now located in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia.

Consultation on Parish Ministry Conference - January 6 - 10, 1992

File consists of correspondence, mainly with Allan Johnson, and other material regarding Nouwen's presentations at the Consultation on Parish Ministry in Orlando, Florida. The theme of the event was "The Spiritual Life of the Pastor." Also includes correspondence with Brett Webb-Mitchell discussing his work with children with disabilities and his desire to meet with Nouwen in Orlando, annotations on the letter of response confirm the meeting. Includes two pieces of writing from Webb-Mitchell "The Religious Imagination of Children with Disabilities" and "Welcome Unexpected Guests to the Banquet." Also includes travel itinerary, airline tickets for Nouwen and three other members of Daybreak, conference Guidebook and Workshop book, and a number of letters, cards, and photographs for Nouwen regarding the event.

Doubleday correspondence file

File consists of business correspondence concerning A Cry for Mercy, Compassion and Reaching Out; business documents include an agreement regarding "untitled book on Compassion", permission to use Reaching Out, two original signed copies of agreements for Downward Mobility, eight photographic prints of illustrations (including at least one used for A Cry for Mercy), and publisher advertisements for The Genesee Diary.

Doubleday correspondence file

File consists of business correspondence concerning Compassion, Reaching Out, The Spirituality of Intimacy, Fecundity and Ecstasy (Lifesigns); business documents including a copy of Spanish agreement for Reaching Out, and an agreement for Nouwen to write an introduction to Yushi Nomura's Desert Wisdom; personal correspondence including copies of Nouwen's letters, thank you letters to the Doubleday staff and mentioning that he was enclosing a card made on occasion of the 25th anniversary of his Ordination (card not in file). File also includes four example sheets of calligraphy used for sub-titles and eight ink line drawings by Dr. Joel Filartiga used to illustrate Compassion.

File consists of business correspondence concerning The Wounded Healer, The Return of the Prodigal Son (one letter in French), Aging, Interrupted Love (published as The Inner Voice of Love) and Compassion (Japanese edition); business documents including a colour photo suggested as a cover image, three colour mock covers for The Wounded Healer, sample text and Spanish rights offer sheet for The Return of the Prodigal Son.

El Salvador file

File consists of materials pertaining to the play “A peasant of El Salvador” and its performance at Yale Divinity School that was organized by Nouwen in 1983. File also includes a promotional package for the play, the contract for the performance and a promotional photograph.

Framed photographs

File consists of 6 framed photographs. These photographs mostly feature individuals. They were most likely displayed or stored in Nouwen's office at L'Arche Daybreak.

Framed photographs from Nouwen's home

File consists of 22 photographs, most of which are framed. These photographs were kept by Nouwen in his home. Most depict Nouwen family members. Included in the file is a framed woven piece of fabric, which was stored with the photographs.

Greenbelt Art Festival - August 28-29, 1992

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's participation at the 1992 Greenbelt Arts Festival in Northampton, England. Nouwen gave three seminars entitled "Being the Beloved," "The Life of the Beloved," and "The Discipline of the Beloved.' Includes Greenbelt Art Festival programs and daily event guide from 1991 and 1992. Includes a brochure, information sheets, forms, maps, and directions. Also includes newspaper article about Nouwen at the festival and a photograph of Nouwen bowing his head in prayer as he prepared for his talk.

Honourary Doctorate of Human Letters, Earlham College

File consists of the honourary Doctor of Human Letters diploma Nouwen received from Earlham College (Richmond, IN) and the contents of a photo album, creator unknown, containing a copy of the diploma, memorabilia from the event and photographs of the campus.
Items in the photo album include: a copy of the Doctor of Human Letters diploma, the convocation citation (author unknown); a program for the convocation; a program for the Earlham College Religious Emphasis Week; a photograph of the convocation; a photograph of the Nouwen speaking at Earlham College; and five photographs taken by T. Strickland of the Earlham College campus, including one each of the ESR Community Building, Earlham Hall, Lilly Library, Carpenter Hall (1987) and one entitled "Campus Scenes, Earlham Hall" (1989).

Icon framing file

File consists of materials relating to icons such as a newspaper article, a letter from Sharon Gill Jones and two photographs of an icon Jones painted. File also includes a map and guide to Cologne and the cathedral.

Icon reproductions file

File consists of graphic material such as photographs, colour slides, negatives and proof sheets related to icons. File also contains an article on one of the icons and several postcards depicting icons. Some of the icons photographed in this series appear in Nouwen's book "Behold the beauty of the Lord: Praying with icons" and it is possible that these photographs were used in the book. The icons include: "The savior of Zvenigorod", "The virgin of Vladimir", "The Holy Trinity", and the icon that Nouwen used for his 25th anniversary ordination card. The file also contains two photographs, Item P2939 of an unidentified icon and Item P2940 a photograph of a cheery blossom tree in full bloom.

Icons from France file

File consists of several stamps and postcards of icons such as Saint Sharbel, The Holy Trinity and The virgin of Vladimir. File also contains a photograph of a painting of Saint Sharbel (Item P2921) and a photograph of an icon of Mary and Jesus, possibly by Peter BTSR Korsuiskia (Item P2922).

Illinois Synod Pastoral Conference - August, 1980

File consists of correspondence, mainly from Randy Webb and Arthur Arnold, and other material regarding Nouwen's leadership at the 1980 Illinois Synod Pastors Conference, Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. The theme of the conference was "Prayer and Ministry." Includes slides, from Randy Webb, of Augustana College. Also includes correspondence and a newspaper clipping from Richard Holmer, regarding Nouwen speaking at the First Lutheran Church in Genesco, Illinois. Nouwen spoke on the relation of prayer and contemplative life to ministry and outreach. Also includes a photograph of Randy Webb's two sons.

Immaculate Heart Hermitage, Camaldolese Monks - July 1994

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding a retreat by Nouwen and Frank Hamilton at the Immaculate Heart Hermitage, Camaldolese Monks, in Big Sur, California. Includes a letter and pictures from the Carmelite Monastery that Nouwen visited while he was in California. Also includes a copy of an article entitled "KQED documentary features Oakland resident and activist," accompanied by a letter from Rose Lucey.

Kanuga Conference Center- March 17 - 19, 1993

File consists of correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's leadership at the Bowen Christian Commitment Conference, at the Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Nouwen's topic was "The Beloved Community." Nouwen was accompanied to the conference by Sue Mosteller and Bill Van Buren. The conference was sponsored by the Institute in Servant Leadership. Includes correspondence regarding arrangements for the event, correspondence from participants in the event, 1992 and 1993 Kanuga Program Offerings, Kanuga pamphlets, and Institute for Servant Leadership newsletters. Also includes forms for permission to tape the event and cheque stubs for honorarium, travel, photographs and miscellaneous expenses.

Katholieke Jongerendag - October 30, 1993

File consists of two files containing correspondence and other material regarding Nouwen's participation as a speaker at Catholic Youth Day in Maaspoort den Bosch, Netherlands. Nouwen also a guest on a show for NCRV (Nederlandse Christlijke Radio Vereniging). Includes poster, program, and newsletter from Katholieke Jongerendag '92 with the invitation to participate. Also includes program and newsletter from Katholieke Jongerendag '93 and details for Nouwen's appearance on NCRV's show. The majority of the material is in Dutch. Also includes a memorial card for Père Thomas Philippe. Also includes photographs from the event in file 1167(1).

Lannoo correspondence file

File consists of business correspondence concerning The Prodigal Son (also referred to as Canvas of Love), Aging, and Lifesigns; business documents including three Dutch drafts of The Prodigal Son and a colour photographic image for the book cover, a colour photograph of a blade of grass, and royalty statements.

L'Arche portfolio

File consists of one photograph album titled "L'Arche Portfolio" which was created by Peter Weiskel in December 1985 and holds 104 photographs. These photographs were taken by Weiskel while he was visiting with Henri Nouwen in France at L'Arche Trosly-Breuil. Nouwen and Weiskel also possibly took a few excursions together in France, as some photographs are not from L'Arche Trosly-Breuil. The photographs are labelled sequentially with numbered labels, although some labels are missing.

Photographs in the album depict the town of Trosly, L'Arche Trosly-Breuil grounds and buildings; core members and assistants at L'Arche Trosly-Breuil, including some photographs at a gathering; some photographs of meals at various houses of L'Arche Trosly-Breuil; photographs of Pere Thomas, Pauline Vanier, Jean Vanier, Henri Nouwen, Xavier le Pichon and Brigitte le Pichon; and photographs of Morienval and Ourscamp.

File consists of letters from Félix Gregori and Alcibíades Rodriguez Suarez as well as newsletters pertaining to Latin America called "Andean focus" and "Update". File also contains a photograph attached to the letter dated December 23, 1986, in which Alcibíades Rodriguez Suarez asks Nouwen to sponsor his four month old son to be baptized.

File consists of materials regarding Lent, including an invitation to participate in common Lenten disciplines from Dayspring Team; booklet titled "Keeping Lent in our Home"; text titled "The Passion"; notes; and correspondence regarding planning Lent activities. File also contains a photograph of a mosaic of Jesus.
