Report cards

File consists of one report card and two honour cards. The report card is for the school year 1948 - 1949 at St. Aloysius College, Nouwen's Gymnasium. This report card includes a certificate of honourable mention from July 1949 in the subjects Religion, Dutch, and Geography. The two honour cards are from the school year of 1944 - 1945 (Nouwen's first year at Gymnasium) for Nouwen having earned first place in his class in a subject. The first card recognizes Nouwen for Latin, and the second card for an unknown subject [Bijbljesch?].

Papers from Gymnasium

File consists of two essays handwritten by Nouwen while attending the Gymnasium. Essays include a summary on Gerard Brom, etc., and one entitled, “Salvation is Never Born in Noisiness" (possibly for a religion class or Dutch).

Typescript on exegesis

File consists of a typescript on exegesis, which includes a biblical historiography, the pentateuch, the ark of the covenant, the route of the exodus, and the didactic books of the Old Testament. The header on the pages reads: "Rosendaal, 1952-'53."

Photograph album 5

Album 5 consists of photographs taken between 1947 and 1954. Compiled by Henri Nouwen, the album is predominantly focused on Nouwen's stay at a boys summer camp, his time at seminary school in Apeldoorn and trips he took to countries such as Italy, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom. The camping group was called de Vossen [the foxes] and was run by Aloysius College. Also included are photos of Laurent J.M., Maria, Paul, Laurent and Laurien Nouwen at their home, in Scheveningen, and celebrating Laurent's First Communion in 1951. Of interest is a photo [P6644] of Henri Nouwen's grandmother Sara M. Ramselaar holding him as a baby in 1932.

Typescript and notes on J.H. Newman

File consists of several typescripts in various stages of editing for a paper entitled, De Meimaandgedachten van J.H. Newman, by Nouwen. File also contains lists of books pertaining to Newman organized by the libraries in which they can be found, as well as handwritten reading notes and preliminary notes for the paper by Nouwen.

Paper on De Mariadevotie van John Henry Newman

File consists of a handwritten draft of a paper by Nouwen, including his handwritten corrections, entitled, "De Mariadevotie van John Henri Newman" ("The Devout Marie by John Henry Newman"). File also contains a typescript version of the paper, again with corrections in Nouwen’s hand.

Reading notes

File consists of handwritten reading notes by Nouwen. It is possible that these were reading notes for the writing of De Mariadevotie van John Henry Newman by Nouwen. The notes cover the following texts:

File consists of materials relating to mission work, including pamphlets and a typescript by J.B. Moeller titled "Missie en Liefde" ["Mission and Love"]. Pamphlets include: several issues of Annalen (no. 688, 687, 686, 685, 684, 683, 682, 681, 679); De Medische Missiezusters; "Rapport 'Missie en technische Bijstand'"; "Centrum Lectuurvoorziening Voor de Missie - Rijsenburg"; "Helpthen bidden"; several issues of S.P.L. Writings on Ireland

File consists of a spiral-bound notebook with handwritten prose by Henri Nouwen, possibly in part or whole draft of articles on Ireland.

File consists of a draft typescript of an article entitled, "De Koningin van Ierland", that was likely partially published with several other articles by Nouwen about Ireland in 1956.

Travel journal from Ireland

File consists of a red exercise book containing a journal about Nouwen's trip to Ireland. Parts of this journal were published in articles about Ireland in 1956. Journal starts with an entry from August 15th. There also are reading notes in the journal, and notes on conversations. Some notations are in English. Mentioned in the journal are Neil O'Duffy (with reference to storytelling and fairy tales, local history, and customs), and other storytellers, with some notes on Irish tales. Also included are notes in English about synthetic coffee, with some of these notes in English.

Course notes on ethics

File consists of notes relating to a course on ethics, taught by Prof. van Boxtel during the 1955-1956 school year. The notes are typed and handwritten. Typed notes may have been written by J. Vossen.

Theology diploma from Corpus Studiosorum Nobiomagensium Carolus Magnus

File consists of one theology diploma from Corpus Studiosorum Nobiomagensium Carolus Magnus. This diploma is likely Nouwen's degree from the seminary, which he received after his ordination. The diploma has a raised red wax seal with a ribbon. Diploma is dated November 5, 1957.

Draft of Over twijfel enherkenning

File consists of a draft typescript of "Over Twijfel Enherkenning", a homily written by Nouwen in Heeswijk, The Netherlands, on June 2, 1957. The subject of this homily is Matthew 28: 16-20, and the theme of doubt.

Materials relating to Rijsenburg Seminary

File consists of materials relating to Rijsenburg Seminary. This includes newspaper clippings on Rijsenburg Seminary, the events and students of Rijsenburg; programs from events for priests; typed notes on "vindicamus dagen" [restoration days] in Hilversum; a handwritten poem by Brigitta Bruisman in honour of "your" (presumably Nouwen's) ordination; a letter from J. Nieuwenhuis, editor of De Bazuin, thanking Nouwen for sending a copy of his article on Newman; handwritten notes by Nouwen;, and two letters to Nouwen, one from Paul Minchen, and the other from an unknown person.

Ordination material

File consists of material from Nouwen’s ordination ceremony on July 21, 1957 in Utrecht and on July 28, 1957 in Scheveningen, including reminder cards, dinner menu and two copies of a photograph of Nouwen as a child playing priest. File also includes copies of Nouwen's ordination certificates from 1955-1956.

File consists of typescript of a text titled "Het teken van de tempel" ["The Sign of the Temple"], likely written by Nouwen while he was at the Seminary. Cover page includes a quote in French of A. Leboisset on the mystery of the Temple.

Course notes: Asthma

File consists of course and reading notes on Asthma, as well as notes on Biecht. Paper is of varying sizes, and multiple pens were used. The notes are based on an internship at an asthma clinic for children. The notes, which are comprehensive also contain details about a "Sinterklass" party that Nouwen may have organized and attended at the clinic.

Letter to Ton Delemarre

File consists of one letter from Henri Nouwen to Ton Delemarre. Delemarre was a friend of Nouwen's from college.

File consists of 1 photograph of an Unilever, taken from a distance, which is a factory complex at which Nouwen was an intern in the summer of 1958.

Verslag van een stage bij van den Bergh's en Jurgens Fabrieken N.V.

File consists of an essay by Nouwen titled "Verslag van een stage bij van den Bergh's en Jurgens Fabrieken N.V." [Report of an internship with Van den Bergh and Jurgens factories NV.]. This is a report of Nouwen's time as an intern at Unilever. Report includes drawings and pasted in diagrams of his work and the factory. His internship was conducted from July 1 - August 1, 1958.

Course notes on neurophysiology

File consists of course notes from lectures of a course taught by Professor Prick on Neurophysiologie, taught during the 1958-1959 school year. Notes are typed, with some annotations in pen.

Religion and mental health

File consists of an unbound copy of "Religion and Mental Health: Collected Papers," edited by Anton T. Boisen, revised in 1959. Manuscript also includes article by Boisen entitled, "Scientific Method Study of Human Nature.”

Critische notities bij H. Remplein

File consists of three drafts of an essay by Nouwen titled "Critische notities bij H. Remplein: "Die Seelische Entwicklung der Menschen im Kindes und Jugendalter" [Critical notes by H. Remplein: The Mental Development of People in Childhood and adolescence]." One draft is held by a metal clip inside a folder. One draft (presumably the first draft) is handwritten.

Course notes for practicum

File consists of course and reading notes for a practicum completed by Henri Nouwen. This includes notes on "Multidimensionaliteit en systematiek der psychologie." Also includes notes relating to an experiment which was conducted by Henri Nouwen with two assistants: Mevrouw M. Draat and Mej. M.J.M. Brandhof. Some materials have annontations in Nouwen's hand. Also included is a small notebook with handwritten notes by Nouwen, pages of mathematical calculations in Nouwen's hand, and a page of 'vraagstukken' [issues] for the practicum from 1958-1959. There are also handwritten notes in two different unknown hands.

Hiltner - Papers, Manuscripts

File consists of copies of two short manuscripts by Seward Hiltner entitled, “Religious Anxiety and Values (Self Understanding By S. Hiltner)” (Abingdon Press, New York 1951), and “Clinical Pastoral Education: An Appraisal 1960”.

Postcard scrapbook

File consists of eighteen loose scrapbook pages which contain sixty-two postcards depicting buildings, streets, and other landmarks in the Netherlands and Germany.

File consists of a soft-bound draft typescript of an article entitled, "Christus in Israel", written by Nouwen after a visit to Israel with his uncle Toon Ramselaar in the late 1950s or in 1960.

Photographs of Holland

File consists of 47 slides featuring photographs taken in the Netherlands. These photographs were possibly taken in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Some photographs feature the canal that runs through Amsterdam. There are photographs of buildings in a city as well as in a more country setting, as well of some photographs of windmills. There are also several photographs of paintings, perhaps done by Rembrandt van Rijn (P3964-P3966).

Photographs of unknown location

File consists of 44 slides featuring photographs taken in an unknown location, perhaps somewhere in the Caribbean, such as Haiti. There are palm trees visible in some photographs, and other trees. There are several photographs of small children, as well as some that appear to be taken inside a school (P4030-P4031). There are images of huts and people standing near to these huts. There are also some photographs of white priests in white robes, perhaps at a Mission building. Several photographs feature the outside of a white cement-block church. There are other white adults in photographs, perhaps other Mission workers. Some photographs were taken in a city, some featuring a marketplace, and some featuring city streets and a wall along a bay. An older man and woman are in some of the photographs in different locations, but they are unidentified.
