This latest accession complements and builds on the existing collections of Alberto Manguel's papers held at the Fisher Library. It consists of manuscript drafts (including translations) of his various works - both fiction and non-fiction - including his 2007 Massey Lecture, "The City of Words." It also contains other editorial material, primarily galley and page proofs, as well as correspondence and material related to awards won by Manguel and various literary juries he has served on.

This gift is representative of Manguel's entire body of work, 1960s to 2002, from both his business and personal life. It includes drafts, revisions, manuscripts, galleys, illustrations, publisher's correspondence, person correspondence, photographs, printed appearances and other material. It includes material related to: A Dictionary of Imaginary Places; A History of Reading; Reading Pictures: A History of Love and Hate; News From a Foreign Country Came; Soho Square; Black Water; Other Fires; Meanwhile in Another Part of the Forest; Into the Looking-Glass Wood; Mothers and Daughters; Fathers and Sons; God's Spies, and many other translations, anthologies, articles, conferences, literary juries and other projects Manguel has been involved with. Manguel maintains correspondence with a fascinating array of authors, publishers and many other notable people.

Includes drafts, notes, galleys, correspondence and research related to: With Borges; Stevenson Under the Palm Trees; Solitary Vices; la leyenda dorada; Chesterton; Lamentations; le poète mourant (Henrich Heine); translations and different issues of A History of Reading; other authors' work; reviews written by Manguel for various publications; adaptations for CBC; essays; videotapes; reel-to-reel audio tapes; CD-ROM; audio cassettes; Bestiario (special book with loose pages in handmade silk box by Spanish artist Salvador Retana, with text by Manguel; only 10 in total made by the artist); Christmas and birthday cards; ink, pencil and watercolour sketches and drawings by Manguel.

This collection includes original draft manuscripts, galleys and page proofs for Manguel's published work, including his book A Reading Diary (2004) and his anthology Penguin Book of Christmas Stories (2005), as well as for his articles, reviews and other projects for a variety of publications. It also includes translations of his work, published clippings (of his own work and articles about him), correspondence (October 1999-July 2005) - both personal and business - material related to his work on various literary juries (including the Man Booker International Prize 2005), his drawings, and bound galleys and page-proofs of books sent to Manguel for review.

This latest accession of the Alberto Manguel Papers complements and builds on the existing Manguel Papers held at the Fisher Library (see MS Colls 00405, 00425, 00444, 00477, 00522, 00541). It includes manuscripts for City of Words (the 2007 Massey Lecture delivered by Manguel, and published by House of Anansi Press) and All Men Are Liars, a novel begun in English in the early 1990s but eventually completed, and published, in Spanish as Todos los hombres son mentirosos. It also includes French translations, including manuscripts and page proofs, of the above three books. As well, the collection consists of the manuscripts, primarily in English and Spanish, for Manguel’s numerous writing projects in 2008-09, and material from various projects, including the 2009 TVO-produced television series “Empire of the Words.” The collection also includes correspondence – including letters and notes from writers Isabel Huggan, Anne Michaels, Rohinton Mistry, P.K. Page and Susan Swan – literary jury work, manuscripts sent to Manguel for review or reading, and an extensive collection of antiquarian book catalogues collected by Manguel.

This accession of Alberto Manguel’s Papers complements and builds on the existing collections held at the Fisher Library. (Please MS Colls. 00405, 00425, 00444, 00477, 00522 and 00541.) It consists of manuscripts – in English, Spanish and French – for Manguel’s numerous writing projects, as well as the manuscript for his 2010 book A Reader on Reading, along with proofs and other materials related to the book. Among other works represented in this collection are an operatic libretto he composed to accompany music by Oscar Strasnoy titled Un retour (it premiered at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 2010), his novel All Men Are Liars, City of Words, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey: A Biography, and catalogues and books on the artists Miquel Barceló and Glen Baxter.

The 2006 accession complements the existing Alberto Manguel collections held at the Fisher Library. It consists primarily of original draft manuscripts, translations, galleys and page proofs for Manguel's recently published work, notably The Library at Night (published 2006), as well as for his commissioned articles, reviews and other projects for a variety of publications. (Many of these published articles are in the collection.) It also includes manuscript drafts for two as-yet unpublished novels in English, At The Mad Hatter's Table and The Book of Praise. Among the other published works represented in this collection are: The Reading Diary (US version, published in 2004); two Manguel-edited anthologies: THe Penguin Book of Christmas Stories (2005) and Memoria Para el Olvido: Los ensayos de Robert Louis Stevenson (2005); A Room Full of Toys (2006); and, The Secret Supper, authored in Spanish by Javier Sierra and translated by Manguel. It also includes material for the book series Manguel edits for the French published Actes Sud.

There is a small number of personal diaries and agendas in this collection, as well as correspondence, primarily related to his work. There are also large files of correspondence and other administrative records from his two primary agencies of the past 15 years, Lucina Vardey and Westwood Creative Artists, both based in Toronto.

Consists of original draft manuscripts and translations of Manguel's commissioned articles, reviews and other projects for a variety of publications, as well as manuscripts, proofs and other related material for the Manguel-authored books Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey: A Biography (published in 2007 by Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver), The Reading Diary, The Library At Night and The Bride of Frankenstein (published by the British Film Institute, 1997). It also includes material for several Manguel-edited anthologies - including The Penguin Book of Summer Stories (released 2007) - correspondence, both general and with his new literary agency, Agencia Schavelzon, and material for the book series, Cabinet de lecture, which Manguel edits for the French publisher Actes Sud. The collection also includes material from Timothy Findley (and his partner William Whitehead), primarily correspondence, but also two books on whose inside covers Findley wrote notes for two novels he was beginning.

This accession for Alberto Manguel’s Papers includes archival material and work related to his life predominantly between the years of 2009-2011. Featured within this accession are new manuscript drafts for novels; music and art projects for the Fondation Cartier: Moebius - Transe Forme Exhibit (“Metamorphoses” anthology by A.M.), and for the Metropolitan Opera; original drawings; other writers’ manuscripts and page proofs; material pertaining to various lectures, seminars and readings; printed books; periodicals; magazine appearances; clippings; the Lettres d’Automne and Montauban DVDs; 2007 Massey Lecture: The City of Words CD; and significant correspondence with Westwood Agency, Schavelzon Agency, and author, Isabel Huggan.
