Includes corporate files from the Canadian Bata Shoe Company (including correspondence; legal and financial records; product development, marketing and promotional files; technical and production-related files, and human resources files). Coach House Press Papers

This is the first accession of the Coach House Press (CHP) papers by the Fisher Library. It primarily includes files accumulated and maintained by Stan Bevington, founder of the CHP. (While Library and Archives Canada holds a significant amount of Coach House Press materials, Bevington held back many of his own personal files related to CHP, with the intention of donating them to the Fisher Library). The papers include accounting materials for the Press–price quotes, sales invoices, payroll information, etc. –and other materials related to the running of the CHP. It also includes material collected by Bevington, dubbed “Stan’s ephemera,” which contain handwritten notes written by Bevington, as well as correspondence, programs and other assorted and interesting items.
The collection is particularly noteworthy for its extensive collection of computer-related material, including the files for SoftQuad, the company co-founded by Bevington that was at the forefront of the digital age in publishing. Bevington is considered a publishing pioneer in the transition to digital technology from traditional typesetting.

Oral history interview with Kumaraswamy Ponnambalam conducted by Ruth Belay

Dr. Kumaraswamy Ponnambalam, currently a Professor in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo, graduated from the University of Toronto with his PhD in 1987. Dr. Ponnambalam shares his experiences as an international student, reflecting on what brought him to UofT and some of the challenges he faced in attending the University. In particular, he focuses on the financial and workload pressures placed on students. He recalls some of the support networks that were created on campus, both through social activities, for example through residence and the International Student Centre, academic collaboration, and demonstrations. These networks also extended outside of the University, in particular between Tamil-speaking communities. Dr. Ponnambalam describes the impact of differential fees as a UofT student and his continued response as he now observes the current financial barriers faced by international students. At the request of Dr. Ponnambalam, this oral history interview is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Sinnathurai Vijayakumar who played a profound role in Dr. Ponnambalam's life, particularly while at UofT.

Oral history interview with Ikem Opara conducted by Ruth Belay

Ikem Opara, currently Director of National Learning Partnerships at the Rideau Hall Foundation, was an international student at UofT’s St. George campus. His active involvement at the University included executive roles with Black Students’ Association (BSA), playing Varsity football, and membership in organizations such as the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the African Students’ Association and the Nigerian Students’ Association. Opara describes the personal impact that these organizations had in forming deep social connections, while emphasizing throughout the interview their commitment to create spaces of belonging on campus that reflected both racial and ethnic identities. He recounts many of the BSA’s and Alpha Phi Alpha’s activities, including mentorship initiatives, talks, social events, and discusses their underlying goals, particularly regarding the strategic use of space to highlight Black presence at the University. He reflects on the BSA’s engagement in issues such as representation within curriculum and broader community activism around police violence in the city, while also reflecting on challenges faced at UofT.

Oral history interview with Sean Wharton conducted by Ruth Belay

Dr. Sean Wharton, Medical Director of the Wharton Medical Clinic, holds doctorates in Medicine and Pharmacy from the University of Toronto. Wharton discusses his early experiences at UofT, the underrepresentation of Black students in his courses, and how his growing interest in deconstructing systemic barriers drew him to the Association for the Advancement of Blacks in the Health Sciences (AABHS). Inspired by the Association’s success in providing mentorship and developing outreach initiatives, Wharton helped found the Black Medical Students Association (BMSA) in 2000. He recounts how support and allyship from AABHS, UofT administrators, such as Dr. Miriam Rossi, and fellow students was necessary in establishing the BMSA. Wharton describes the continued goals of the organization, including addressing financial barriers for students and the importance of BIPOC representation through all organizational levels and roles. In emphasizing the significance of building connections and community, he also details the BMSA’s engagement within Toronto schools and the growth of the organization nationally.

Oral history interview with James Nugent conducted by Ruth Belay

Dr. James Nugent, currently Lecturer at the University of Waterloo, received his undergraduate degree in 2006 from UTSC and continued with his graduate work at UofT’s St. George Campus. Nugent shares his early experiences of student activism and involvement at UTSC, particularly through Resources for Environmental and Social Action (RESA), while also reflecting on the larger societal and political shifts following 9/11. Nugent remarks on the unique student environment at UTSC, noting events, initiatives, as well as the cross-cultural learning he experienced there. In describing his participation in the anti-globalization movement and peace action, through to his later work on climate justice and social policy, Nugent discusses the impact of service learning and community engagement in education. He reflects on the pressures faced by current students and questions how these will shape youth activism, as well as considering the effects of social media and the breadth of issues in which students are engaged both here and abroad.

Oral history interview with Bill Gardner conducted by Ruth Belay

Bill Gardner, CEO of CRM Dynamics, was a former University of Toronto student at the St. George Campus who was actively involved in student government from 1985 to 1989. Serving as president of both the Arts and Science Student Union (ASSU) and the Students’ Administrative Council (now the University of Toronto Students’ Union), Gardner discusses his focus on addressing concerns specifically relevant to UofT students, the dynamics present internally within both groups, as well his approach in working with the University’s administration, external groups and political figures. He touches on a number of issues and activities including frosh programming and planning, the production of the ASSU’s Anti-Calendar, and the adoption of digital technology at the University. Gardner reflects on his own career to highlight the benefits of the leadership experience he gained during this time, as well as the long-term effects of a shift away from student-led organizing within post-secondary institutions.

Research and subject files

Series consists of research material and correspondence with colleagues and scholars collected by Hacking in the course of his academic activity. Records included are predominantly reprints, though also include press clippings, emails, written correspondence, transparencies, and notebooks. Material is grouped by subject as well as author.

Subject matter encompasses a broad range of topics including the history of mathematics, physics (in particular, Bose-Einstein condensates), genetics, classification and taxonomies, porphyrian trees, medieval illustration, autism, body augmentation, suicide terrorism, and psychoanalysis. Authors represented include Ludwig Wittgenstein, Hilary Putnam, Saul Kripke, Willard Van Orman Quine, Michel Foucault, Lorraine Daston, Peter Galison, Bruno Latour, and Noam Chomsky. Judith Robertson Papers

This third accession of Judith Robertson’s papers is made up of two major components: material relating to the life and work of Canadian diplomat Charles Ritchie, and material relating to Robertson’s family, and to her own work. The Charles Ritchie material includes some of his original correspondence with his niece, Elizabeth Ritchie, along with extensive diary entries (1920-1973), made while he was working abroad with the Canadian Department of External Affairs. This collection also contains a number of original photographs from the same period, featuring numerous noteworthy Canadians, along with material relating to Ritchie’s literary estate. Also included are a number of books and periodicals owned by Ritchie, as well as a number of Irish novelist Elizabeth Bowen’s published works, inscribed to Ritchie by Bowen.

The material relating to Judith Robertson revolves mainly around her work as the executor of Charles Ritchie’s literary estate, as well as around her role as co-editor of the work Love's Civil War: Elizabeth Bowen and Charles Ritchie (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 2008). In addition, this collection includes correspondence and documents kept by Norman A. Robertson, Judith Robertson’s father, who also worked as a diplomat in the Department of External Affairs with Charles Ritchie.

Personal and biographical

Series consists of textual records and graphic material documenting Ian Hacking’s personal life and career, with eight files related to the histories of both the Hacking and MacDougall families. Records include a passport, birth and marriage certificates, family snapshots, drawings by his children, as well as correspondence detailing financial contributions made to various charities and initiatives. Hacking’s professional and academic activity is reflected in written and photographic documentation of awards and honours received, including the Killam Prize for the Humanities, the Companion to the Order of Canada, and the Holberg International Memorial Prize. Also included in the series is an autobiographical document written by Hacking detailing the orientation of his research.

Digital files consist of files documenting his personal life and family [“BUSYNESS”], a folder of biographical information and curriculum vitae, further documentation about the Holberg Prize, and drafts of writings by Judith Baker titled “Trust and Commitment” and “Some Aspects of Reasons and Rationality”.

Family records and correspondence

Series consists of copies of photographs and documents pertaining to Johnstone's family. Documents include correspondence between Mary F. Williamson and Helmut Kallmann of the National Library of Canada; a copy of the petition for divorce filed by Catherine (McGregor) Johnstone against her husband John Francis Johnstone, which was later withdrawn (January 8, 1979); a copy of an article in the Toronto Star (November 26, 1927) regarding Amelia Hart and her seven husbands (Johnstone was the fourth); a copy of a letter from Mary F. Williamson to Professor Carl Morey at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto regarding Johnstone and performances of his songs; a copy of Johnstone's obituary (February 25, 1913); and a copy of scanned portraits of Johnstone. Accessions include the personal records of Larry Wayne Richards, architect and educator, documenting his personal life with his partner, Frederic Urban, their education and Richards’ professional life, especially his teaching and administrative work at the Nova Scotia Technical College and as Dean of Architecture at the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto. Also documented is his involvement in multiple design projects, both as a working architect and as an advisor. Included is his work as a member of the Physical Planning and Design Committee at the University of Toronto (especially for Graduate House), the restoration of 230 College Street, his extended collaboration with Kin Yeung (Blanc de Chine, WORKshop), and his participation in municipal architectural and design projects. There are extensive files on his work for the Canadian Centre for Architecture, including the Venice Biennales of 1991 and 1996 and as an advisor to the Royal Ontario Museum’s ‘Renaissance ROM’ project (architect, Daniel Libeskind). This fonds contains records related to the professional activities and personal life of Dr. Ernest Mastromatteo, occupational physician. The bulk of the material in this fonds documents his roles as a medical practitioner, researcher, and occupational health director. The series documenting the activities of the Nickel Producers’ Environmental Research Association, an association Dr. Mastromatteo was heavily involved in during the 1980s, is the largest, with smaller series documenting his career at Inco, his work with the American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists, and his many projects, case studies, organizations, associations and societies, as well as legal cases he provided testimony in. There is also a relatively large amount of material documenting his research in the form of addresses, and additional material chronicling his time as a student at both the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and the School of Hygiene.

Series 1: NHK, Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai
Tsuji Communications became the distributor/agent for NHK programs from Japan. The first series includes four popular TV series in Japan. The first includes the popular Japanese show Kōhaku Uta Gassen, translated to the Japanese Red and White Show. It is an annual New Year’s Eve television special produced by Japanese public broadcaster NHK. The show is broadcast live simultaneously on television and radio by the NHK network and TCI productions. The Japanese Red and White show part of the series features master tapes with edited and satellite versions, from 1976 to 2000. Also included are the promos, clips, and episodes from Toronto Kohaku. The second Oshin is a popular series in Japan, episodes 1-271, in English subtitles and cue sheets to explain the episode’s content. The third is Japan Video Topics, short 15 minutes episodes on different topics in Japan. Lastly is the NHK Weekly News and various news clips aired on the NHK network.

Their popular Television series Hello Japan was a half-hour weekly program produced and hosted by Susan Tsuji. The episodes and clips spread from 1977 to 2000, including the short program Hello Toronto. It consisted of interviews, musical performances, and on-location shoots of community and public events (1984-2004). The Tsuji’s captured and recorded the visits of visiting dignitaries (such as the Prince and Princess of Japan). They capture interactions the Japanese Canadian community with federal and provincial politicians, conferences pertaining to the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC), Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC), and the Redress Campaign and more. As the Tsuji Family was very well connected in their community, they could attract all the important guests to speak on all the topics of importance to the community.
Series 3: Tsuji Family
This series consists primarily of personal videos, documents and objects that once belonged to Susan and Roy Tsuji. The Tsuji’s main objective was to promote Japanese culture to Japanese Canadians, not only in media but to support local schools for children to learn the language and culture of Japan. The textual documents include the materials and textbooks used by the Language International (LI) schools. These textual documents include the international students’ textbooks, schedules, and journals, which students had to keep studying the Japanese language.
Series 4: National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC)
The collection also features video recordings and textual documentation of the Redress Campaign and the 10th Anniversary of the Redress. The NAJC negotiated the historic Redress Settlement on behalf of all Japanese Canadians who suffered injustices and acts of discrimination during World War II. Led by the NAJC, the movement sought to hold the Government of Canada accountable for the severe human rights violations suffered by the community between 1941 and 1949. Many Japanese Canadians were interned and deported, while others were sent to the sugar beet farms of Alberta and Manitoba. The property of Japanese Canadians was seized by the Government and sold without their consent. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and NAJC President Art Miki ended a successful campaign that led to the historic signing of the Redress agreement on September 22, 1988. The Tsuji family interviewed and captured key events and spokespersons from the NAJC for the Redress journey across Canada to Ottawa. Most notable interviews were held for Roger Obata, Joy Kogawa and Art Miki, the president of the NAJC.
The fonds includes footage of the march and progress to Ottawa, city hall, and the Redress rally to celebrate their victory. Interviews of Bob Ito, Roger Obata, various Prime Ministers, and supporters of the Redress campaign are also included in the fond. Footage of the Redress campaign spreads from 1983 to 1997. The last sub-series is the 10th Anniversary Banquet and Gala of the Redress, the gala was to thank the leaders of the NAJC, such as the tribute to Roger Obata.
Series 5: Television Commercials
The Tsuji family also obtained a vast collection of 30 seconds and 60 seconds commercials aired during their programs. Many created by Japanese companies such as the Japan Airline, Sanyo, Mita; and western commercials.
Series 6: Miscellaneous
The final series of the collections are the Miscellaneous. Overall, this collection is a balanced combination of entertainment, drama, local affairs, and international programming of interest to the Japanese Canadian community from the 1980s to 2001.

This fonds contains primarily textual documents to the Redress campaign, and the media format includes tapes such as Umatic, BetacamSP, and VHS. Records document Milton Israel’s graduate studies at University of Michigan, and his publishing, teaching and research activities as Professor of South Asian Studies in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. The records relating to his graduate studies consist of research notes and some footnote drafts for his doctoral thesis “The Anglo-Indian in defense of authority, 1905-1910”.

A significant portion of the B2002-0009 accession documents his research and teaching activities relating to South Asian settlement and migration during the 1990s and includes course materials for HIST 394, a course he developed on this topic. In addition there is correspondence and reports relating to the Sikh Studies program in the Department for the Study of Religion developed at the time he was Director for the Centre for South Asian Studies.

The B2011-0004 accession contributes significantly to his research and teaching activities, including course materials and lecture notes for HIS 101, HUM 101, HIS 232, HIS 282, HIS 364 and HIS 394, relating to British colonialism, the history of India and particularly modern India, and South Asian civilization and migration. Also included are several popular lectures and seminars that Professor Israel gave over the course of his career.

Records documenting his publication activities in Series 4 focus on primarily three projects: his book In the future soil: a social history of the Indo-Canadians in Ontario (1994), his work on Encyclopedia of Canada’s Peoples (1999) while he was Chair of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario and “Safe Haven. The refugee experience of five families”, a book and exhibition produced in cooperation with the Royal Ontario Museum. Accession B2011-0004 also includes notes and correspondence regarding several published reviews and articles by Professor Israel, as well as reviews of these key publications.

An earlier accession (B1995-0052) is represented in Series 6, and includes correspondence, research material, notes and card files relating to, with drafts of, Milton Israel's book, "Communications and Power: propaganda and the press in the Indian Nationalist Struggle, 1920-1947" (1994).

The first section of this series documents some of Professor Friedland’s activities regarding books and articles published before 2003, with updated files carried forward to 2013. While more extensive files pre-2003 writings are found in Series 5 of accession B2002-0023, the articles are found only in the accessions documented in this finding aid, B2003-0008 and B2014-0029.

The remainder of the series concentrates on several projects and their spin-off articles: Professor Friedland’s Detention Before Trial (1965), a study of the bail system; A Place Apart: Judicial Independence and Accountability in Canada (1995); ‘Access to the Law’ project, a major internet attempt to make law more accessible; the first and second editions (2003 and 2013) of his University of Toronto: A History; several articles published in Criminal Law Quarterly including ‘Criminal Justice in Canada Revisited’ (2004), ‘Searching for the Truth in the Criminal Justice System’ (2014), ‘Beyond a Reasonable Doubt: Does It Apply to Finding the Law’ (2015), and ‘Reflections on Criminal Justice Reform in Canada’ (2017); his memoirs, My Life in Crime and Other Academic Adventures (2007); his introductions to University of Toronto: The Campus Guide: An Architectural Tour (2010) and the 2014 republication of W. P. M. Kennedy’s The Constitution of Canada; and his Searching for W. P. M. Kennedy: the Biography of an Enigma (2020).

The ‘Access to the Law’ project, a follow-up on his 1975 book with the same title, did not go forward. The files document Professor Friedland’s efforts to realize the project, including lining up support, looking for a field for ideas on implementation, and his failure to convince the Mike Harris government to support it financially. Also included is a digital copy of the internet project.

The files on The University of Toronto: A History, written for the University’s 175th anniversary, complement those found in B2002-0022 relating to the first edition. They document not the writing of the book itself, but its launch and promotion, especially through Professor Friedland’s talks to University alumni groups across Canada and in selected cities in the United States, at conferences, and also through an exhibition in the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library. Also documented are individual readers’ comments on the book, including references to errors and suggestions for inclusions in any future editions. The correspondence, notes, memoranda, programmes, slides and photographs detail the issues that arose and how they were resolved. Some of Professor Friedland’s talks relating to this project are found in Series 8: Addresses.

The second edition (2013) incorporated a new introduction and corrections. Notes for and drafts of it are present here, along with promotional material, reviews, and an interview with Steve Paikin of TV Ontario. The correspondence with individuals to whom Professor Friedland sent drafts for feedback includes incisive comments and new material provided by many of them. Professor Friedland detailed his conversations with, in particular, senior administrators: Donald Ainslie, Christina Amon, Meric Gertler, Paul Gooch, George Luste, Scott Maybury, Cheryl Misak, Mayo Moran, David Naylor, Julia O’Sullivan, Robert Prichard, Deep Siani, Shaun Shepherd, Elizabeth Sisam, Franco Vaccarino, Catherine Whiteside, and Paul Young. He also created additional files on many of the academic and administrative divisions in the University; these parallel those found in accession B1998-0022 relating to the writing of The University of Toronto: A History.

The research, writing, and publication of Professor Friedland’s memoirs is documented in detail, including the hiring of research assistants and the reports they presented, the numerous drafts of the volume, and the negotiations with University of Toronto Press and the Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History over its publication, distribution, and promotion. At the same time as he was starting work on his memoirs, Professor Friedland was asked to give the John Edwards Memorial Lecture for 2003, which was presented as ‘Criminal justice in Canada revisited’ and published under the same title. Most of the files relating to this project are in Series 8: Addresses, but those relating to its publication in the Criminal Law Quarterly are in this series. The publication was a somewhat revised version of a 15,000 word paper he prepared for the Lecture but not delivered.

The files on Professor Friedland’s introduction to the 2014 republication of W. P. M. Kennedy’s The Constitution of Canada by Oxford Press documents each stage of the project from its inception when Oxford Press reached out to Friedland to its publication and beyond including drafts, correspondence related to feedback before and after publication, and listings and reviews of the final product. After the publication of the introduction, Professor Friedland continued on to give several talks and write an extended biography on W. P. M. Kennedy.

The files related to Professor Friedland’s biography, Searching for W.P.M. Kennedy: The Biography of an Enigma (2020) primarily document the research, writing, and publication of his book through research notes; correspondence with research assistants, archivists, colleagues, and the U of T Press; funding applications; and drafts.

In addition to a number of files on articles, derived from the above projects, are other files dealing with various aspects of criminal law in Canada.

This fonds documents various facets of Prof. Armatage’s career as a filmmaker, senior programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival, and a professor of Cinema Studies and Women’s Studies at the University of Toronto. The academic activity files in Series 1 give an overview of the breadth of her interests, achievements and promotions. Lecture notes and other course materials in Series 2, along with comments on student works found in Series 3, document her teaching role. These will be especially useful to researchers interested in understanding the early beginnings of both women studies and cinema studies and how these developing academic disciplines were being taught to students. Prof. Armatage’s role as a programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival is documented in her extensive notes found in notebooks where she recorded critiques of films she was screening. These are found in Series 4. The extent of her filmmaking is documented in Series 7 and contains preserved original film elements to several of Prof. Armatage’s films, along with a limited amount of related documentation on the making of these films. Unfortunately, this fonds does not contain release prints for these titles.

This fonds has only a small amount of records relating to her published academic works as well as files relating to conferences she organized and associations in which she was active. These can be found in Series 5 and Series 6.

Personal records of Professor Stephen Clarkson, documenting his career as a political scientist, writer, teacher, and his early political career in municipal politics and with the Liberal Party of Canada and Ontario. Records in this fonds document the entirety of Clarkson's life and career. Records include biographical information (CV's, activity reports, honours), personal and professional correspondence, and files related to his early education and the writing of his Ph.D. thesis.

Series 3 to 13 consist of records documenting Clarkson's several books and his extensive research and writings over the course of his career. Joint projects and research with Christina McCall including original records by her can be found in some these series as well, specifically the research and writing of Trudeau and Our Times (Series 2) and research on Canadian Federal politics (Series 13).

Series 14 to 18, document Clarkson's teaching activities and his career within the University of Toronto's Department of Political Science.

Series 19 to 22 document his political roles within the Liberal party, his run for Toronto Mayor in 1969 and as well as his social activism.

This fonds also includes Liberal Party of Canada policy documents (1966-1976) belonging to Allen Linden that were given to Clarkson either because he took over as chair of the policy committee or collected as a primary resource for his research on the Liberal Party.

Accession B2019-0003 was an accrual acquired from his spouse Nora Clarkson following his death, and consists of files from his home office and laptop computer.

Accession B2023-0008 (1 box, 1975-2000) is an accrual of further personal records consisting of his journal and notes about his marriage to Christina McCall.

The collection consists of material created during and for Thompson’s career. The material reflects his professional skills, can capture stages from across his time on radio and as a sound producer. Material from 104.5 CHUM, 1050 CHUM, audio recordings from various Juno Awards, audio from interviews with celebrities, CHUM Chart pamphlets, audio recordings of CHUM DJs announcing community events, CHUM jingles, Audio recordings of the program Evolution of Rock, commercial work, video DVD’s of HiFi Salutes, audio for the Music Express Radio Show, the Rock Express Show, Rock 30, and The Producers. The material is in a variety of formats including vinyl records, ¼” audio reels, CDs and other formats.

This series documents various professional activities and research including participation in conferences, film festivals and screenings, and particularly Prof. Armatage’s work within the Major Collaborative Research Initiatives Program. The series includes her correspondence with a small number of notable women filmmakers, including Dorothy Arzner and Tracey Moffatt, as well as posters, programs, and pamphlets on women and cinema collected over the course of her professional career. There is also one file relating to her time teaching in Japan in 2002.
