Gerald Edward Blake fonds

Fonds consists of 3 accessions

B2003-0023 (7 boxes, 1892-1921): This accession documents the short life of Gerald Edward Blake from his birth in 1892, his education at Ridley College and the University of Toronto, to his death on the battlefields of France during World War I in 1916. Series 1 and 3 contain his diaries and correspondence to family members in which he describes his experiences at school, his trips to Britain and France in 1913 and most significantly, his 13 months of service during World War I. The majority of his letters are to his mother during his months overseas, but there are also letters to his sisters, Margaret (1893-1963), Constance (1896-1979) and his brother, Verschoyle (1899-1971). Some of these letters are attached to typescript copies, prepared by his brother Verschoyle prior to 1971. Capt. Blake also sent postcards annotated by him which provide a photographic record of British army life in camp, as well as official coloured war service postcards of the British army in action. Other postcards of street scenes in France and Britain helped to illustrate the places he had been including the town of Pozières near which he was killed in 1916 (Series 5). Other war records include his military orders and notes while at the front, and his copy of active service bible. Correspondence and photographs also document his close friendship with his cousins Hume Wrong (1894 – 1954; BA 1915) and Harold Wrong (b.1891; BA 1913), who was also killed in action in July 1916. After Gerald’s death, Hume Wrong assisted Mrs. Blake in making arrangements for her son’s grave site in France and sent home photographs of the cemetery which he visited in 1920-1921 (Series 5). In addition, Mrs. Blake received other remembrances of her son’s service such as a commemorative medal from the British Army, a copy of the history of his battalion’s service in the War and a copy of Volume II of the British Roll of Honour (Series 4).

Milton Israel fonds

Records document Milton Israel’s graduate studies at University of Michigan, and his publishing, teaching and research activities as Professor of South Asian Studies in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. The records relating to his graduate studies consist of research notes and some footnote drafts for his doctoral thesis “The Anglo-Indian in defense of authority, 1905-1910”.

A significant portion of the B2002-0009 accession documents his research and teaching activities relating to South Asian settlement and migration during the 1990s and includes course materials for HIST 394, a course he developed on this topic. In addition there is correspondence and reports relating to the Sikh Studies program in the Department for the Study of Religion developed at the time he was Director for the Centre for South Asian Studies.

The B2011-0004 accession contributes significantly to his research and teaching activities, including course materials and lecture notes for HIS 101, HUM 101, HIS 232, HIS 282, HIS 364 and HIS 394, relating to British colonialism, the history of India and particularly modern India, and South Asian civilization and migration. Also included are several popular lectures and seminars that Professor Israel gave over the course of his career.

Records documenting his publication activities in Series 4 focus on primarily three projects: his book In the future soil: a social history of the Indo-Canadians in Ontario (1994), his work on Encyclopedia of Canada’s Peoples (1999) while he was Chair of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario and “Safe Haven. The refugee experience of five families”, a book and exhibition produced in cooperation with the Royal Ontario Museum. Accession B2011-0004 also includes notes and correspondence regarding several published reviews and articles by Professor Israel, as well as reviews of these key publications.

An earlier accession (B1995-0052) is represented in Series 6, and includes correspondence, research material, notes and card files relating to, with drafts of, Milton Israel's book, "Communications and Power: propaganda and the press in the Indian Nationalist Struggle, 1920-1947" (1994).

Peter H. Russell fonds

The Peter H. Russell fonds is comprised of three accessions: B2005-0001, B2017-0006, and B2019-0008. The records span over 60 years and document Prof. Russell’s academic career primarily with the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and as a recognized expert in the field of judicial, constitutional, and Indigenous politics.

Arranged in fourteen series, the records consist of correspondence, both personal and professional, manuscripts of published and unpublished works, addresses, talks and reviews, teaching and research materials. In particular, these records document the development of his expertise through the preparation of manuscripts, research, teaching and communication with colleagues at universities in Canada and internationally. Material also reflects Prof. Russell’s advocacy and active engagement in a number of national issues.

Correspondents in accession B2005-0001 include members of the Canadian judiciary such as Justices D. C. McDonald, Bora Laskin, Bertha Wilson, and Alan Linden, and politicians such as Bob Rae, Ian Scott, Ed Broadbent and Stephane Dion.

Both Series 6 (Professional activities and addresses) and Series 11 (Articles, reviews, published addresses and referee comments), contains samples of talks and addresses delivered to prominent bodies such as the Toronto Club, the Canadian Club (Toronto and Winnipeg), to university audiences and local community groups such as Learning Unlimited.

His public service activities with Indigenous groups, such as the Dene Nation, and with related governmental bodies, such as the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the Ipperwash Inquiry, are documented in Series 5 (Consultation and public service). In addition to his academic activities, material from accession B2005-0001 in this series includes records relating to his community involvement with the Wychwood Rate Payer’s Association, the Bathurst-St. Clair Task Force, Legal Aid Committee, Ontario Liberal Association and University Settlement, among others.

Finally, material in this fonds provides significant coverage of Prof. Russell’s participation in associations and organizations such as the Churchill Society for the Advancement of Parliamentary Democracy (Series 7) University of Toronto Faculty Association (Series 8), the College and Retiree Association of Canada (Sub-series 10.1) and the Retired Academics and Librarians of the University of Toronto (Sub-series 10.2).

Records primarily focus on the academic and publishing activity of Hacking from the early 1980s to 2010. The material reflects the broad and diverse interests of Hacking in his work, as well as his exchange with scholars in diverse fields. Records include correspondence, manuscripts and drafts of written works, reprints, lecture notes, and extensive subject files. Additionally, correspondence, press clippings, and photographs chronicle Hacking’s professional and academic achievements.

Fonds also documents aspects of Hacking’s personal and family life. These include his diaries and notebooks, birth and marriage certificates, drawings by his children, family snapshots, as well as correspondence, photographs, and copies of records from the Hacking and MacDougall families.

This fonds consists of a mix of documents and records pertaining to Easterbrook’s various professional roles, including those of teacher, researcher, and administrator. Of the three accessions that make up the fonds, B1975-0030 consists of correspondence with Harold Innis as well as assorted notes, including those taken from discussions with Innis during his final months; B1979-0039 consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, notes, and manuscripts documenting Easterbrook’s roles as professor and head of the Department of Political Economy; while B1985-0011 consists of textual and graphic records documenting Easterbrook’s teaching activities and term as Chairman of the Department of Political Economy. There is thus considerable overlap between the aforementioned accessions. The organization of the fonds into series consequently reflects this overlap such that several accessions often appear in a single series.

Consists of 6 accessions which include correspondence, notes, notebooks, sketchbooks, sketches, designs for stage sets, costume designs, photoprints and photonegatives, scrapbooks documenting the artistic lives of Frederick Coates and his wife, Louise Brown. The photographs include images of Frederick's family, his military service in World War I, dance, and his work in the reconstruction of the faces of maimed soldiers, his studio and their house, and models of buildings. Also includes Guest Book for "Sherwood House", with invitations to dramatic productions held therein; three letters between members of the Hoitt family (1867, 1885). Also included are water colours of costume designs, 5 Art Deco works of art, consisting of Coates' three stage sets for 'Danse Fronds' (ca. 1929), 'Fashions' (ca. 1928), and 'The Storm Centre' (1927); a theatre design featuring a clown; and a still life entitled 'The Blue Plate' (1922). Artifacts include medals, printing blocks, pottery, 20 modelling tools and a sculpture documenting their careers and artistic work.

As a student teacher at the Faculty of Education, he was active in the Future Teachers Club and other initiatives that worked to encourage post-secondary studies in teaching to African Canadian students. Personal records of Professor Peter W. Nesselroth, documenting his career as a professor of French literature for the Centre of Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto and his published academic work on subjects covering French literature, Isidore Ducasse, Surrealism, literary theory, semiotics and psychoanalytics. The emphasis is on his academic writing from the 1970s through to the 2010s, with Isidore Ducasse (Lautréamont) and Jacques Derrida figuring prominently as subjects. Academic honours and teaching material for graduate courses at the University of Toronto and professional correspondence are also included.

Included are Professor Nesselroth’s MA and PhD theses, correspondence, course readings lists and syllabi, drafts and off-prints of academic articles, drafts of addresses, conference programs and photographs.

22 photographs document Ontario College of Pharmacy student Marjorie Wright, later Marjorie Downs. Included is her graduation portrait (1938), a photo album of snapshots showing her graduation, residence, working in a lab as well as King George IV and Queen Elizabeth's visit to Toronto in 1939. Also documenting her student days is a composite portrait of the Senior Executive Class of 1938, Ontario College of Pharmacy of which Marjorie Wright was a member. Finally, there is one portrait of Mrs. Downs later in life as well as an award marking the 50th anniversary of her graduation from the Ontario College of Pharmacy.

Fifty-five glass lantern slides document helium experiments that took place in Department of Physics in the 1920s. They originally belonged to Prof. Joseph O. Wilhelm, lecturer and co-author with J.C. McLennan of various articles. The slides were used to illustrate these articles and may also have been used for teaching. Includes original spectrographic data for the Raman Effect, views of scientific laboratory equipment, mostly likely the helium laboratory, as well as line drawings of the Helium Liquefier and the Oxygen Apparatus.

This subseries consists of records related to Lorraine Segato’s research, producing, and directorial work on the documentary film “Queen Street West: The Rebel Zone” as well as the film’s soundtrack. This includes an extensive number of research documents pertaining to the Toronto film music and art scene in the 1970s and 1980s. It also includes correspondence, press clippings, documentary treatments and outlines, budgets, funding applications, shot lists, scripts, lists of interview subjects, credits, and supers lists. Subseries Eight: Screenwriting Projects Research Materials consists of records related to research done by White, predominantly pertaining to a potential series entitled “The Denisons of Canada.” Records in this subseries include grant applications, correspondence, a television series treatment, and a project description. It also includes a substantial amount of research materials, including books, book and journal excerpts, copies of historical records including maps, photographs, correspondence and diaries, archival finding aids, genealogical records, and bibliographies. Also included in this subseries are research files for a potential new instalment of “Peacekeepers,” set in Cyprus, in 1974, as well as research for a project entitled “Graveyard of the Pacific.”
Subseries Nine: Awards consists of awards and nominations received by White over the course of his screenwriting career. Included in this series are Gemini nomination certificates for “Striker’s Mountain,” “The Legend of the Ruby Silver,” and “Peacekeepers.” It also includes awards statuettes from the Writer’s Guild of Canada Top Ten Awards, for “Ruby Silver” and “Peacekeepers.”
Subseries Ten: Miscellaneous Files includes records labeled as miscellaneous by the creator, as well as records not easily ascribed to a particular title or production. Records in this series include correspondence, WGC project registrations for various titles, matted postcards, research clippings, a brochure for White’s production company (Kicking Horse Productions), writer’s contracts and purchase agreements, and a disc containing professional photographs of White.
Subseries Eleven: Books and Reference Materials consists of books related to White’s screenwriting career. Works in this series include “Telling It: Writing for Canadian Film and Television,” (which includes a chapter by White), and “Big Screen Country: Making Movies in Alberta.” It also includes two screenplays not written by White, a book about the Avro Arrow, and an Orenda Engines branded lighter.
Series Three: Digital Print Writing includes records related to White’s digital print writing work (including novels, novelizations, and memoirs). Included in this series is a copy of White’s novel, Crimea Sabre, as well as printing order details pertaining to this book. Also included in this series are research clippings pertaining to “Crimea Sabre.” This series also includes an essay by White about the founding of the Council of Canadians. This series also includes personal short stories, genealogical research records (including family trees, correspondence, copies of military service records, and scans of family photos), and a small amount of White’s personal materials (high school report cards, membership cards, track and field ribbons).
Series Four: Writer’s Guild of Canada includes records related to White’s work with the ACTRA Writer’s Guild as well as the Writer’s Guild of Canada, and the arrangement is largely based on the creator’s original order. Records in this series include correspondence, clippings, policy and discussion papers, policy proposals, lists of guild personnel and portfolios, meeting minutes and agendas, reports, forum and working group agendas, priorities and action items lists, speeches, and notes. It also includes a full run of “The WGC News” newsletter, as well as a run of “Canadian Screenwriter” magazines from White’s time as Guild president. Finally, this subseries includes a USB key of digital files relating to White’s time as WGC president.
Series Five: Kaslo/Kootenays and Mining includes records related to White’s time as a miner, resident of Kaslo, British Columbia, and work with the Kootenay Lake Historical Society. Records in this series include newspaper and magazine clippings and brochures pertaining to home design and home building. It also includes research and copies of archival materials pertaining to the history of mining in British Columbia. It also includes historical publications by the Geological Survey of Canada, and books pertaining to the Kootenays, including a first edition of the 1888 travelogue “A Ramble In British Columbia.”

Jeanneret and Sidney Hermant. There is also a copy of Sword's paper entitled "Democratization of Universities, 1960-1974: some Commonwealth comparisons" and a copy of a paper given to him "The History of CUSO" [Canadian University Students Overseas]. Also included are photographs documenting Sword at various University events from 1967 to 1978, mainly photographed by Robert Lansdale. Also a photo album on the retirement party for Sarah McCausland.
