UTSC Photographic Services fonds

The UTSC Photographic Services fonds covers the years of approximately 1964 and 1966 to 2008. The collection represents an invaluable visual history of the University of Toronto Scarborough campus and is made up almost entirely of photographic materials – negatives, contact sheets, slides, and prints.

Photographs in the collection from the 1970s to 1994 are attributed to David Harford and photographs from 1994 onward are attributed to Ken Jones. Photographs cover a broad range of subjects, such as the buildings and grounds of UTSC, campus events, faculty, staff, students, and much more.

Material is arranged into the following series:

Menus types included placemat menus, single sheet menus, trifold and four fold menus, five fold, seven fold and menus in booklet style. Some menus are laminated while others are in vinyl enclosures. Menus range from take away and delivery, to eat in and include wine lists, menus for cafes, breakfast menus and menus for cafeteria lunches.

The material is divided into Series 1 Menus. The series is divided into 6 subseries: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America.

The collection consists of movie posters, ads, trading cards, postcards, books, magazines and journals, related to Frank Buck (Frank Howard Buck (1884-1950), a renowned American hunter, animal collector, film director, actor author and producer. The collection also consists of material related to zoo displays and architecture, catalogues and books related to zoo and animal collecting, photographs off various zoo related animals found in different parts of America and a board game. The material is divided into five series:

Bender, Daniel E.

David C. Onley fonds

The fonds covers the years of 1998, 2006-2014, while predominantly covering the years of 2007-2014. The fonds documents the work and activities of David C. Onley during his tenancy as the 28th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from September 5, 2007 to September 23, 2014.

The fonds contains six series:

  6. Awards and regalia

General files are comprised of reference and research files. Articles and clippings contains newspaper articles, publications and interviews that mention David C. Onley, as well as articles of interest collected for him. Correspondence includes outgoing, incoming, and internal office correspondence. Daily records comprise the bulk of the fonds and contain calendars and detailed textual and photographic documentation of Onley’s activities as Lieutenant Governor. The series also contains electronic records which are copies of the textual and photographic material within the daily calendars and daily activities files. Guest books contain bound books with signatures of visitors to the Lieutenant Governor’s events. Awards and regalia contains material and objects bestowed upon David C. Onley such as certificates and university regalia from convocation ceremonies and honorary degrees.

The fonds serves as a representative sample of the activities carried out, and the relationships engendered, during A.F.W. Plumptre's tenure as principal of Scarborough College from 1965 to 1972. Both official papers and personal documents are included. Official documents include: reports, correspondence, transcripts of speeches, and seating plans. Personal documents include: invitations, cards, photograph albums, clippings, publications, books, and artifacts.

The series contains material related to Frank Buck the animal hunter, movie actor, producer, director and author. Material consists of ads, movie stills, books (primarily in comic book style), and trading cards.

File contains a total of 2 photographs of newsworthy topics; black and white; various sizes; one photograph with writing on the back regarding a barn fire; second photograph of protestors against apartheid in South Africa.

Binder contains 202 colour slides depicting interiors around the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. Some slides are labeled with the letters "IC" followed by a number. It is assumed that "IC" represents slides depicting interiors around the campus.

Menus from Kenya

File includes menus from Nairobi, Kenya. Material consists of lunch menus, bound menus, take away menus, and laminated menus. Menus feature Chinese cuisine. The Dragon Pearl Chinese Restaurant Limited features handwritten prices for dishes and a note from Harley about the restaurant. The file also features an unsigned letter from a friend of Harley's. Many menus are photocopies. The photographs in the file depict the facades and some interior of several Chinese restaurants. The restaurants in the photographs include the Kowloon Garden Chinese Restaurant with the inscription, "The cutest couple made us drink tea while they coupled papers + hand wrote name in Chinese," the Dragon Pearl Restaurant, the Five Star Chinese Restaurant, (the back of the photograph reads "Took me 5 minutes to 'spain [sic] what I wanted they did not have full menu and would not give me original. Oh Well but they let me use the bathroom"), the Hong Kong Restaurant with the inscription "Gorgeous restaurant. Owner thought I was sort of insane but amusing," and the Panda Chinese Restaurant. The corresponding menus to the photographs can be found in the file. Menus are found in booklet style and as single or multiple pages. File also contains a menu from a hotel in Nairobi.

Binder contains 17 B&W photographs, and 72 B&W negatives depicting graduation, construction, Former Prinicpal Joan Foley, campus buildings and grounds, the stacks, freshmen in their beanies, the downtown campus, a statue, lectures, the old biology building, portrait of C. Williams, Dean Beckel on a college tour, portrait of former Principal A.F.W. Plumptre, sports teams - football, track or soccer, and women's field hockey, a tv broadcast, the 1968 graduating class composite, and students in residence. The binder contains the handwritten labels "Scar College Sod Turning Ceremony - Min of Ed. - Bill Davis", "Scar. College Under Construction", "College Construction", "Scarborough College - Main Campus", "Dr. Urquhart - Zoology Class. Scar. College Main Campus", "Scar. College Downtown Campus - Prof. T. Menus from Hong Kong (1)

File contains trifold, single sheet and booklet style menus. Menus feature Chinese, Italian, American, Japanese, Russian and seafood cuisine. File also contains a banquet menus for Mr. L. Everett and Captain A Seeder and officers of the S.S. Siberia.

Negatives are also marked "Tuder Hugakor" and have photos of a man in a suit and tie.

College staff

College staff in various offices (maintenance, post office, cafeteria) and around campus; photos often have names and titles written on the back. More negatives of staff can be found in file 1-9. Contact sheets include photos in a mall and an airport.

Event with food and bands playing in the Meeting Place, as well as Principal Ralph Campbell giving a speech on the H-Wing patio steps.

Valley barbeque

An event in the Valley with Principal Ralph Campbell and students. Negatives also include some photos of students in residence.

Photographs

File includes four undated photographs: photographs of a painting highly stylized photo of a boy, presumably Todorow; photograph of a photo of Todorow in an unidentified car; photograph of a photo of Todorow in his 1950 MG; photograph of a photo of two women in Todorow's 1950 MG. Also included is Todorow's Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card for his 1950 MG and a 1973 Mercedes, as well as a leather license holder.

Police

File contains a total of 79 portraits of campus police officers, group photos of hockey tournament team and police safety awareness day depicting conversation with children and involving games and other teaching methods; multiple copies; 11 individual negatives with envelops including information of vendor; 2 negative strips.
