Skilling family sous-fonds

This sous-fonds documents the activities of various members of the Skilling family, principally Gordon’s father, William Watt Skilling, and brothers, Andrew Douglas and Edward Donald Skilling; his uncle, Ernest John Skilling, and his (Ernest’s) mother, Emma Louise Skilling. Included is correspondence, biographical and other notes, programmes for wedding anniversaries, obituaries, a will, photographs, a photograph album, and a box of mementos of military service during World War I.

The photo album was assembled by Ernest John Skilling and begins with a trip he made to the western United States in 1926 to a Shriner’s convention. The trip back across Canada by train includes images of ‘Hindus [in] British Columbia’, of the Royal North West Mounted Police, First Nations individuals in regalia, the Rocky Mountains, the prairies, northern Ontario and Lake Superior. The album concludes with photos taken during a tour of Kentucky, Alabama, and Tennessee by the 48th Highlanders; photos of the Canadian Expeditionary Force cemetery in France and Donald Skilling’s grave, taken on a family visit to the site in 1919; and of African men and women engaged in domestic work and hunting activities (these images are associated with the missionary work of Reverend Albert Wilkinson). Many of the photo prints in the album have detailed information written on the backs thereof.

The box of military service mementos belonged to Gordon’s brother, Private Edward Donald Skilling, #157689, 1st Battalion, Canadian Infantry, Canadian Expeditionary Force, who was killed on his first day in action at the front on 4 May, 1917. It contains the following items: a Queen’s Own Rifles pin (Donald spent 6 months with the QOR before the war as a bugler in its bugle band); his ‘dog tag’ (1st Battalion); a shoulder badge – ‘Canada’ [CEF]; two hat badges, one marked ‘Canada’ and the other ‘111, Canada’ [111th Battalion] (probably a souvenir); two brass buttons (tunic and cuff); a piece of soldier’s ration; a hollow candle of the type used in dugouts in the trenches; a .303 calibre bullet and a shell fragment; two medals – the British War Medal and the Victory Medal (Inter-Allied War Medal), each inscribed on the rim: ‘157689 Pte. E. D. Skilling 1-Can. Inf.’, and a silver cross presented to Donald’s parents in his memory by the Minister of Militia and Defence.

Amir Hassanpour fonds

Fonds consists of records documenting the professional and personal life of Prof. Hassanpour, Kurdish-Iranian Marxist scholar and Professor at UofT’s Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. Material reflects key areas of Prof. Hassanpour’s research, most significantly Kurdish history and culture; the history of political movements, grassroots organization, and class struggle in Iran, Iraq and Turkey; and communication theory and sociolinguistics. Material includes correspondence with colleagues and scholars internationally, documentation of research with particular focus on Prof. Hassanpour’s dissertation and his Peasant Movement Project, records relating to conference presentations, interviews, and teaching, as well as his publishing activity.

Prof. Hassanpour was deeply invested in the preservation of Kurdish oral, visual, and textual documentary heritage as a response to the historical state suppression of cultural-political struggle of Kurdish people. Reflected in records throughout the fonds is Prof. Hassanpour’s work in pursuing the establishment of Kurdish Studies as a discipline, his work editing journals related to Kurdistan, and his effort in exposing and circulating books on Kurdish Studies to libraries and research institutions internationally. Prof. Hassanpour also actively collected and preserved Kurdish texts, dailies, and visual materials. This material is included in Series 9 (Reference material) and through bibliographic and audio material held in other repositories at the University of Toronto Libraries (please see the related material note below).

Career and employment records include letters of application, contracts, and correspondence documenting Prof. Hassanpour’s positions and organizational membership. Files related to his employment at the University of Windsor document multiple contracts as well as covering a human rights dispute between Prof. Hassanpour and the department. Accessions include the personal records of Larry Wayne Richards, architect and educator, documenting his personal life with his partner, Frederic Urban, their education and Richards’ professional life, especially his teaching and administrative work at the Nova Scotia Technical College and as Dean of Architecture at the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto. Also documented is his involvement in multiple design projects, both as a working architect and as an advisor. Included is his work as a member of the Physical Planning and Design Committee at the University of Toronto (especially for Graduate House), the restoration of 230 College Street, his extended collaboration with Kin Yeung (Blanc de Chine, WORKshop), and his participation in municipal architectural and design projects. There are extensive files on his work for the Canadian Centre for Architecture, including the Venice Biennales of 1991 and 1996 and as an advisor to the Royal Ontario Museum’s ‘Renaissance ROM’ project (architect, Daniel Libeskind). There are also files of correspondence and related material on many architects, in particular, Frank Gehry.

Bata Shoe Company Papers

Includes corporate files from the Canadian Bata Shoe Company (including correspondence; legal and financial records; product development, marketing and promotional files; technical and production-related files, and human resources files). The bulk of the material was created by the Canadian Bata company, however many records relate to several of the organization’s international outposts, including companies headed in Africa, India, Asia and Europe. The collection also includes press clippings and other publications about the Bata Company and its historical significance. There are also a small number of Bata family records, primarily for Thomas J. Bata (1914-2008), Sonja I. Bata, Tomáš Baťa (1876-1932) and Marie Bata.

Personal records of Dr. Daniel W. Lang, professor, Department of Theory and Policy Studies, OISE/UT, and senior policy advisor to the president of the University of Toronto. Records include files relating to his activities as a senior administrator and policy advisor to University presidents James Ham, David Strangway, George Connell, Robert Prichard, and David Naylor. Files document projects, plans, financing, campus development, technology development, etc. Also includes records documenting his academic responsibilities relating to teaching, research and publication, as well as external consulting activities to various academic institutions and government bodies in Ontario and across Canada, particularly the Council of Ontario Universities and the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities.

University of Toronto Blues men's baseball team

This series documents Professor Lang’s years of service to the University of Toronto Blues Men’s Baseball team which he coached from 1994 to 2011. The files contain information on team lists, coaches, financing and fundraising, equipment, rosters and players, and statistical records. There is also some press coverage. There is documentation of tournaments in Columbus, Ohio (1998) and Durham College in Oshawa (1999). Photographs and digital images document the team from 1999-2007, including many images and graphics used to boost the website for the team Also included is an Ontario University Athletics medal for 2001.

Digital files in B2018-0001 include email correspondence with players, university officials, and sponsors; rosters and team photographs; and files related to the construction of a new baseball diamond on the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, which opened in 2006. In 2011, it was renamed the “Dan Lang field” in honour of his many years of service to the Varsity Blues baseball program.

University of Toronto. Administrative activities

This series provides partial documentation Professor Lang’s years as a senior administrator at the University of Toronto. It begins with correspondence, primarily with President Connell, and related material regarding the Ontario Commission on the Future Development of the Universities of Ontario (the Bovey Commission), followed by later correspondence (to 1990) with him. The subsequent correspondence files end in 2010, some of which are contained on 3.5 inch floppy disks.

Professor Lang’s “general files” and “miscellaneous projects” begin with two major controversial decisions, the first being the closure of the Faculty of Food Sciences (1974) and the proposed closure of the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (1986), with only the first being realized. The remainder of this subseries focuses on capital plans and budgeting, primarily responsibility centre budgeting as applied to Scarborough College. There are also files on Maclean’s magazine university and college surveys from the 1990s. The admission surveys from the last quarter of the 20th century also include a Maclean’s survey.

In the mid-1990s the University introduced a new electronic students’ records system (ROSI) with leadership provided by the Registrars Group. It is well documented here. Professor Lang’s activities as a senior policy advisor to the President of the University of Toronto are also documented but only for the years 2005 to 2007.

Professor Lang maintained extensive files on campus development plans and building projects from the mid-1960s to the late 1990s relating to all three campuses, including several on the Southwest Campus. There are also proposals to provide land for a new headquarters building for the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto (1982) and facilities for the abortive bid to hold the summer Olympics in Toronto in 1996.

B2011-0003 ends with several proposals for an innovations centre and an industrial research centre at the University in the decade from the mid-1980s.

B2018-0001 includes further files related to his role as Senior Policy Advisor to David Naylor, a role in which he served until 2012. Also included are arbitration briefs and notes about a dispute between the Faculty Association and the University in 1986-1987, regarding mandatory retirement for professors.

Digital files include email correspondence with several Government of Ontario and U of T officials; files about the Maclean’s survey; and files (notes, briefts, reports) about the expansion of the number of graduate students at the University of Toronto.

The sub-titles in this series are those used by Professor Lang in his original box list. The files contain correspondence, memoranda, notes, and reports, Also included are compact discs containing certain files of correspondence and reports. The arrangement is generally by categories and chronolgically within each, with like materials grouped together.

Barry French fonds

To varying degrees, records in this fonds document key components of Prof. French’s career both within UTIAS and as an outside consultant. His education in the newly developing field of aerospace science is documented in his course notes found in Series 10. These notes were kept specifically to document the early teaching of this subject since Prof. French took courses from Professors Ben Etkin and Irvine Glass whose papers are also held by the University Archives. General correspondence files in Series 1, talks and papers found in Series 2 and 3 as well as course lectures found in Series 7 document his broad role as a university professor including his publishing activities, his relationship with other professionals and his role as an academic advisor and teacher. His role as an administrator both at the University and on the boards of professional associations are only marginally documented in two small series of records: University of Toronto, Series 6 and Professional Associations Series 8.

While Series 5 Research is by far the largest series in this fonds, it is mainly confined to the latter part of his career relating to research supporting SCIEX. Except for a few files, early research files are absent from this accession and researchers interested in research in the 1960s leading to Prof. French’s participation in the Viking project will have to make due with records found in Series 2 and 3 and possibly some correspondence in Series 1. The strength of this fonds is how well it documents the research at SCIEX, one of Canada’s most successful companies to evolve from a university research facility. Most records in Series 5, as well administrative files in Series 6 SCIEX, give a good picture of SCIEX’s evolution including the research undertaken, the funding sources available at the time, the business strategies that let to its success and specifically the instrumental role Prof. French played in this commercial enterprise. These records will be of interest to anyone researching the commercialization and marketing of technology in the Canadian setting. SCIEX is also a successful example of cooperation between industry and a university with the support of government agencies.

Books by Ricarda Nissen

File consists of two books by Ricarda Nissen with content inspired by Henri Nouwen who Nissen met at a book signing in Germany. The book are:
1) "Komm mit zur heiligen Messe" by Ricarda Nissen, 1994. Contains an inscription by Nissen to the Nouwen Archive Letter Project.
2) "Ich komme zu dir. Kinder beten und feiern die heilige Messe" by Ricarda Nissen, 1997

File also includes a postcard with an image produced by Sieger Köder for Nissen's book "Ich komme zu dir" and a photograph of a wall in Nissen's house that contains three original paintings by Köder. The photograph has an inscription noting that the inscription on the wall was from Nouwen.

Included are two photographs glued to cardstock of Nouwen's grave. Material about Nouwen

Series consists of material about Nouwen including material about Nouwen's life, works, and death. This material includes newspaper articles; journal articles; interviews of Nouwen; essays; notes from Nouwen's sermons and lectures; books and book reviews; poems; letters; newsletters; and cards. While some materials on Nouwen's life and works was written before Nouwen's death, the majority of the material is dated after his death in 1996. Much of the material in the series pertaining to Nouwen's death was written by friends of Nouwen, who write about his friendship, his writing, and support.

Alan Cook photograph

File consists of one original colour photgraph of Nouwen playing the piano at a L'Arche assistants' retreat in February of 1990. The retreat took place in Mono Mills, ON. The photographer is Alan Cook.

Michael O'Laughlin photographs

File consists of three photographs. Two of the photographs are of Nouwen at L'Arche Daybreak with Michael O'Laughlin, Nicky and Andy from 1994. File also includes a letter from O'Laughlin to Laurent Nouwen. The envelope for the letter has a handwritten note providing context for the photographs and individuals in them.

Jim Forest photographs

File consists of five portrait photographs of Nouwen from around 1983. One photograph is a colour photocopy of a photograph.

Rev. Donald C. Kocher photographs

File consists of four photographs taken of Kocher with Henri Nouwen and Francis Maurice at a small book signing for "Can You Drink the Cup?" in Illinois on September 6, 1996.

File consists of three colour photographs taken of Nouwen from 1981 to 1985. Photographer is unknown.

Peter J. Naus photographs

File consists of 10 photographs of Nouwen in Utrecht, NL, during a meeting and posing outdoors for photographer, J.W. Wits; eight are copies of photographs in File 163, P2215 - P2222, of the Photographs series in the Henri Nouwen fonds. File also includes a copy of an invitation to Nouwen's ordination (July, 1957).

Pentecost celebrations in June 1959

File consists of a photograph of Laurent J.M., Maria, Henri, Paul, Laurent and Laurien Nouwen in their Scheveningen home around a table. The photograph was taken during Pentecost in spring 1959 by Mr. de Kok.

Henri Nouwen Literary Trust and Society publishing and promotional photographs

File consists of photographs used for Henri Nouwen related books and promotional content. Photographs in the file were separated into the following three folders based on their usage:

1) Photographs used by Beth Porter in Befriending Life
Photographs used by Beth Porter in her anthology Befriending Life: Encounters with Henri Nouwen. In the photographs Nouwen appears alone and with others including Yushi Nomura; Jack Stroh; Cameron and Dylan Humphreys; Thelus George; and Sue Mosteller. February 1977 - Vol. 5

2) Photographs used to promote Bread for the Journey
Photographs and negatives used by the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre to promote Bread for the Journey on the Nouwen Society website. Henri Nouwen and various people, including Sue Mosteller, Mary Carney, Yushi Nomura, Bill Van Buren other members of L’Arche Daybreak appear in the photos.

3) Photographs lent to Michael Ford for use in Wounded Prophet
File consists of photographs lent to Michael Ford for use in Wounded Prophet. The majority of the photos were taken during Henri Nouwen’s 1993 trip to the Ukraine. Nouwen is seen leading a retreat; meeting with Ukrainian community members; signing books; and visiting various unidentified locations. Travel companions Nathan Ball and Borys Gudziak appear in several of the photos. Also included is a photo of Nouwen, wearing a tan sweater over a white shirt, talking to someone off camera and gesturing with his right hand.
