Photographs of Nouwen's trip to Greece

File consists of 138 slides of Nouwen's trip to Greece with several unidentified friends. Slides depict mainly local scenes and scenery, and were previously housed in four slide trays each labelled "Griekenland" I - IV.

Jack Stroh photographs

Jack Stroh's photographs are comprised of 156 photographs, and their negatives, created by Stroh. They document visits, celebrations, and events. They are organized into the following groupings:

1) 53 photographs of Nouwen, Sue Stroh and L'Arche Japan member Gordon Nakamura visiting Henri Nouwen at L'Arche Daybreak. Negative included.

2) 1 photograph of Nouwen and Jack Stroh accompanied by a signed card by Nouwen. Negatives included.

3) 20 photographs of Jasper and Cathleen Naus' wedding and wedding reception. Includes photographs of Nouwen performing the wedding and Sue Stroh. Negatives included.

Actor René Maupré (René de Chauffour)

-Press clippings (221 pages) following the career of actor René Maupré – clippings ranging from 1904-1930 approx. (many clippings are not dated) – some clippings with photographs – great variety of important French newspapers: L’Humanité, Le Matin, La Petite République, L’Aurore, Le Monde illustré, Le Figaro, etc. – clippings about the Théâtre Antoine (Maupré was one of its stars) – some playbills from the Théâtre Antoine – some clippings from American and English newspapers (from p. 145) and some from Italian newspapers (p. 192 sq.) – a very interesting article by Maupré himself (1920?) on the future of cinema as a new art for the “masses” (p. 177).

Clippings, programmes, photographs, letters related to Zola

-Le Charivari, 4 April 1888. This comic newspaper loved poking fun at Zola. In this issue, a satirical article on Zola's political ambitions, entitled "Zola Consultant", signed Cascadio (p. 1-2).
-Theatre du Vaudeville, 20 May 1892. Programme for a one-time matinee performance of Zola's Therese Raquin at the Theatre du Vaudeville in support of the Oeuvre de la Societe maternelle parisienne (La Pouponnière), a benefit organization for orphaned children.
-Signed theatre programme for a special matinee in support of a tomb and a monument for Henry Becque, 31 May 1904. The matinee featured drama, a lecture and a poetry reading. The programme is signed by Victories Sardou, Georges de Porto-Riche, Emile Fabre and Camille Le Sense.
-3 photographs (one of H. Becque as a young man, two of his monument).
-Autograph letter from [signature illegible – great-nephew of Becque] to Madame Georges Ancey, dated «le 23 novembre 1932». Is preparing an edition of Henry Becque’s work – knows that Becque and Ancey were close. Is inquiring if there are letters and documents he could consult. Antoine told him that it could be the case.
-Autograph letter from J. Molbert [?] to [?], dated «3 juin 1905». Asks for tickets for the play. Praises the play, which is penetrating and passionate.

Family photograph album 18

Album 18 consists of photographs taken between 1932 and 1934. Put together by Maria Nouwen, the album is predominantly dedicated to photos of Henri Nouwen as a newborn and infant at the family home in Nijkerk. Nouwen is seen being held and cared for by family, including Maria and Laurent J.M. Nouwen, Sara M. Ramselaar and [Nel Laumans (nee Ramselaar)?], and in professional portraits taken during his first year. Also included are newspaper clippings of announcements about his birth and postcards dedicated to important events in his life including his baptism and first birthday.

Album 17 consists of photographs taken in 1934. Put together by Maria Nouwen, the album consists primarily of photos of Paul Nouwen as a newborn and Henri Nouwen as a toddler. Both boys are seen with family, including Maria and Laurent J.M. Nouwen, presumably at their home in Nijkerk, and Sara M. and Tennis Ramselaar in Amersfoort. Also included are photos of Henri Nouwen playing outdoors with unidentified friends.

Family photograph album 16

Album 16 consists of photographs taken between 1934 and 1939. Put together by Maria Nouwen the album is dedicated to Paul Nouwen, beginning with photos of him as an infant and continuing until he is roughly 5 years of age. Laurent J.M., Maria, Henri and Paul Nouwen are seen with family and friends, including Sara M. and Tennis Ramselaar, Judith and Lien Otto (nee Ramselaar), Henricus, Maria H.R. and Jeanne Nouwen and Els Albregts, throughout. The photos focus predominantly on day to day events at the family home in Nijkerk and later in Bussum, such as Paul Nouwen being held and cared for as an infant, the Nouwen children playing outdoors with friends and the Nouwens posing for photos. Special occasions documented in the album include a trip to Italy taken by Laurent J.M. and Maria Nouwen; Wim Ramselaar's marriage to Rie Letscherts; Paul Nouwen's 4th birthday party; and a beach trip to Wijk aan Zee in 1938.

Family photograph album 4

Album 4 consists of photographs taken during Henri and Paul Nouwen's childhood while living in Bussum, Netherlands between 1938 and 1940. Compiled by Maria Nouwen, the album shows Henri and Paul Nouwen playing with friends, spending time with their parents and celebrating special occasions such as Christmas and Paul's First Communion with extended family and friends. Of interest are photos of Laurent J.M. Nouwen's parents, Henricus and Maria H.R. Nouwen [P6542, P6546, P6549]; photos from the same series as the shot of Henri Nouwen dressed up as a priest used during his ordination [P6544, P6545, P6558, P6559, P6560]; and an old family portrait of the Ramselaars [P6576].

Family photograph album 7

Album 7 consists of photographs taken between 1938 and 1948. Put together by Maria Nouwen, a large number of the photos focus on Laurent J.M. and Maria Nouwen travelling, including by boat and with their children, through the Netherlands, France, Italy and Norway. One such trip was taken to visit the Friedische Molen [Friedesse Mill] in Neer, the Netherlands that was owned by the husband of Laurent J.M. Nouwen's [niece?] Lia Schippers. There are also several pages dedicated to photos of Laurent J.M., Maria, Paul, Henri, Laurent and Laurien Nouwen at home in Bussum and Scheveningen. A series of photos taken in May 1944, during a visit by Henricus and Maria H.R. Nouwen, show Laurent Nouwen as a young baby, less than 6 months after his birth. Extended Ramselaar and Nouwen family members including Hetty Berghs (nee Nouwen), Truus Derkx (nee Nouwen), Harrie Nouwen, Jeanne Nouwen and Toon Ramselaar appear throughout the album.

Collection consists of hand-written and typed manuscripts, correspondence, poems, translations and radio transcripts created by Monsignor John O'Connor. The records were purchases and accumulated by Father Kevin Scannell as part of his G.K. Chesterton research.

Papers of Father John O'Connor

Series consists of a collection of hand-written and typed manuscripts, poems, translations and radio transcripts created and accumulated by Monsignor John O'Connor, as well as his correspondence, collected ephemera (including news clippings, Christmas cards, posters, pamphlets, and small press publications) and research notes. The majority of the material relates to O'Connor's friendship with the author G.K. Chesterton, although O'Connor also translated Latin religious poetry and composed his own verse and wrote prose pieces on literature, Church history, morality, religion and philosophy.

Photograph album 5

Album 5 consists of photographs taken between 1947 and 1954. Compiled by Henri Nouwen, the album is predominantly focused on Nouwen's stay at a boys summer camp, his time at seminary school in Apeldoorn and trips he took to countries such as Italy, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom. The camping group was called de Vossen [the foxes] and was run by Aloysius College. Also included are photos of Laurent J.M., Maria, Paul, Laurent and Laurien Nouwen at their home, in Scheveningen, and celebrating Laurent's First Communion in 1951. Of interest is a photo [P6644] of Henri Nouwen's grandmother Sara M. Ramselaar holding him as a baby in 1932.

Letters to Georges Ancey and James Sanders

  • Autograph letter from Léon Christian [?] to Georges Ancey, dated «Alexandrie, 2 août 98». Tells about the success of L’École des veufs. Asks for permission to play La dupe. Is working hard and they are staging mostly the répertoire of the Théâtre Libre. Hopes to see the Anceys in Paris.
  • Autograph letter from Gustave Toudouze to Georges Ancey, dated «Château de Kermann’goz en Trégastel, par Lannion (Côtes du Nord), Vendredi 11 septembre 1896». Will soon publish an illustrated novel about Camaret. Is asking Ancey to lend some photographs of the region and of the village to the illustrator, for inspiration. Note: this letter was published by J. Sanders by Les Cahiers de l’Iroise, no 161, février 1994. Offprints in the dossier.
  • Autograph letter from Gustave Toudouze to Georges Ancey, dated «Paris 50 rue de Moscou, mercredi 11 décembre 1901». Likes the play Ces Messieurs very much. It is a shame that it has been censored.
  • Photograph of Gustave Toudouze in Camaret (1903 – as to a note at the back of the photograph – sent to J. Sanders by Toudouze’s son – see letter of 18 juin 1952).

Société de l’histoire du costume» - with envelope, not stamped, on letterhead «Préfecture de la Seine». Is sending a photograph of his father, Gustave Toudouze, taken in Camaret in 1903.
  • Autograph letter from Georges G. Toudouze to J. Sanders, dated «Paris, le 29 juin 52», on letterhead «République française. Liberté, égalité, fraternité. Préfecture de la Seine». Sends two books written by his father on Camaret (Péri en mer, Le bâteau des sorcières). Has no copy of his own book on Camaret but sends the address of his publisher.
  • Typed letter from Georges G. Toudouze to J. Sanders, dated «Paris, le 7 juillet 1955», on letterhead «Société mutualiste des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques. Le Secrétaire général Georges G. Toudouze», with envelope stamped «Paris, 7-7-1955», on letterhead «Société mutualiste des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques». Is going away, will not be able to see Sanders just yet. Maybe in September, if Sanders is still in Paris.

Family photograph album 12

Album 12 consists of photographs of the Nouwen family and their friends taken between 1948 and 1956. Put together by Maria Nouwen, the photos are predominantly dedicated to personal family photos, vacations and special occasions attended by the Nouwens. Included are photos of trips to the Nouwen's summer home in Mook, the Netherlands; Laurent J.M. Nouwen horseback riding; Netty and Jock Balfour's wedding; a visit from Norwegian family friends, Lillenor and Arthur Habvard; trips to Italy, Spain and Bosnia and Hercegovina; Laurien Nouwen's 4th birthday party; Laurent and Laurien Nouwen's First Communions; Laurent and Laurien Nouwen at school and with friends; a summer trip to Baexem, the Netherlands; Truus Ramselaar's 25th anniversary as a nun; dinner parties; day to day life in Scheveningen, the Netherlands; and Laurent J.M. and Maria Nouwen's 25th wedding anniversary. Professional portraits of Henri, Paul, Laurent and Laurien Nouwen, likely taken for school, appear along side more candid shots taken by the family.

Of interest is the inclusion of older photos as contextual punctuations and markers of time in relation to the photos within the album. Included are photos of the Nouwen children as infants; Truus Ramselaar as a young woman, prior joining the sisterhood; and a group photo of Nouwen and Rameselaar family members taken on the day Laurent J.M. and Maria Nouwen were married.

Family photograph album 9

Album 9 consists of photographs taken in 1957 during Henri Nouwen's time at the major seminary in Rijsenburg, the Netherlands where he studied philosophy and theology. The majority of the photos are dedicated to Nouwen's ordination as a priest by Cardinal Bernardus Alfrink, Archbishop of Utrecht on July 21, 1957, a formal dinner at the Hotel de Witte Brug in Scheveningen in celebration of the event on July 28, 1957 and his first Holy Mass at Lourdeskerk in Scheveningen, the Netherlands. Family and friends including Laurent J.M., Maria, Laurent and Laurien Nouwen, Toon Ramselaar, Jan and Ella Leijten (nee Nouwen), Francois and Liesje Tombeur, Ivonne and Bert Peperkorn, Ferdinand de Grijs and Jelmer Huisman are seen in several of the photos. Scrapbook like in nature, the album's photos are punctuated by ephemera relevant to the ordination and dinner including newspaper clippings, song lyrics, copies of speeches given by family members and a menu from the celebration dinner. Also included are photos from an unidentified church event and photos of Henri Nouwen in casual and more formal group shots with colleagues and friends at the major seminary.

Ordination material

File consists of material from Nouwen’s ordination ceremony on July 21, 1957 in Utrecht and on July 28, 1957 in Scheveningen, including reminder cards, dinner menu and two copies of a photograph of Nouwen as a child playing priest. File also includes copies of Nouwen's ordination certificates from 1955-1956.

File consists of 1 photograph of an Unilever, taken from a distance, which is a factory complex at which Nouwen was an intern in the summer of 1958.

Verslag van een stage bij van den Bergh's en Jurgens Fabrieken N.V.

File consists of an essay by Nouwen titled "Verslag van een stage bij van den Bergh's en Jurgens Fabrieken N.V." [Report of an internship with Van den Bergh and Jurgens factories NV.]. This is a report of Nouwen's time as an intern at Unilever. Report includes drawings and pasted in diagrams of his work and the factory. His internship was conducted from July 1 - August 1, 1958.

Pentecost celebrations in June 1959

File consists of a photograph of Laurent J.M., Maria, Henri, Paul, Laurent and Laurien Nouwen in their Scheveningen home around a table. The photograph was taken during Pentecost in spring 1959 by Mr. de Kok.

Photographs of Holland

File consists of 47 slides featuring photographs taken in the Netherlands. These photographs were possibly taken in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Some photographs feature the canal that runs through Amsterdam. There are photographs of buildings in a city as well as in a more country setting, as well of some photographs of windmills. There are also several photographs of paintings, perhaps done by Rembrandt van Rijn (P3964-P3966).

Photographs of unknown location

File consists of 44 slides featuring photographs taken in an unknown location, perhaps somewhere in the Caribbean, such as Haiti. There are palm trees visible in some photographs, and other trees. There are several photographs of small children, as well as some that appear to be taken inside a school (P4030-P4031). There are images of huts and people standing near to these huts. There are also some photographs of white priests in white robes, perhaps at a Mission building. Several photographs feature the outside of a white cement-block church. There are other white adults in photographs, perhaps other Mission workers. Some photographs were taken in a city, some featuring a marketplace, and some featuring city streets and a wall along a bay. An older man and woman are in some of the photographs in different locations, but they are unidentified.

Photographs of [Ireland]

File consists of 104 slides featuring photographs likely taken in Ireland and in the United Kingdom. Photographs feature unknown individuals in unknown landscapes. There are some photographs of mountains, stone markers, and a photograph of a group of priests in front of a stone church (P4146). There is one photograph featuring a bust of John Henry Cardinal Newman (P4091). There is one image featuring a city street with double-decker buses (P4105).

Photographs of Israel

File consists of 59 slides featuring photographs taken around Israel. It is likely that Nouwen took these photographs while on a trip to Israel in the late 1950s. It does not appear as though Nouwen is in any of the photographs. Some photographs do feature individuals, but the photographs mostly feature landscapes and buildings, including photographs of Nazareth, Haifa, Judea mountains, and a kibbutz.
The slides are numbered, in Nouwen's hand, and included in the file is a list which matches the numbers and briefly describes the contents. List is in Dutch.

Item consists of one framed photograph of Albert de Jong, a lawyer, and law partner of Laurent J.M. Nouwen. Photograph is a professional photograph, done by an unknown photographer. De Jong is wearing a black jacket and checked tie. His hairline is receding. Photograph is printed with a postcard backing. De Jong died in the 1960s of cancer, and Henri Nouwen became close to him and provided pastoral care in the terminal phase.

Album 11 consists of photographs taken between 1956 and 1961. Henri Nouwen is seen on a trip to Greece and Israel with a group of fellow students from the University of Nijmegen; on board the SS Maasdam where he worked as Chaplain in 1961; and visiting New York, NY while the ship was at port in the city. Also included are photos of Henri Nouwen and classmates at major seminary in Rijsenburg and at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
