Series consists of materials created by Nouwen for use in his capacity as a professor and instructor. These materials include notes for lectures, reading notes, class lists, handouts for students, class schedules, course evaluations, audio recordings of lectures, and records related to the administration of courses.

Series has been divided into two sub-series:

1.7.1. Course handouts, lecture, reading and students notes (1966 - 1994, predominant 1972 - 1981). This sub-series also includes 14 audio recordings of Nouwen's lectures and 357 art slides which he used in his lectures on Van Gogh.

Aging and Ministry

Item consists of talks on "Aging - A Way to Darkness" (SR2 v1, side 1), "Aging - A Way to Light?" (SR2 v1, side 1), "Detachment and Compassion in the Minister" (SR2 v2, side 1) and "Ministry to the Aging" (SR2 v2, side 2). The talk explores three forms of rejection: by society (segregation), by dying friends (desolation), and by inner self (loss of self).

Sound recordings

Series consists of audio cassettes of Nouwen giving lectures at universities, speaking at churches, conferences and other engagements, parts of and complete books on tape and recordings from radio shows and interviews. Some of the material was professionally produced and some are amateur recordings.

Henri Nouwen: the wounded healer

Item consists of a sound recording of Nouwen at the Yale Berkeley Convocation in 1972. Nouwen spoke on the theme of the wounded healer (based on his book by the same title). Nouwen is introduced by Colin Williams. The talk is divided into three parts: I. Ministry (v1); II. The Wounded Minister (v2); III. The Healing Minister (v3).

The Christ-memory in our lives

This item consists of a video recording from 1975 of Henri Nouwen giving a lecture called "The Christ Memory in Our Lives." The talk poses the question 'How do we live life in the memory of Jesus Christ?' In the talk, Nouwen discusses the Memory of Christ as a healing, sustaining, guiding experience and process of recollection.
The content of this lecture was later developed into The Living Reminder: Service and Prayer in the Memory of Jesus Christ published in 1977.

Compassion

Item consists of an amateur recording of Nouwen lecturing on "Compassion" in Wilton, Connecticut, on February 19, 1976. The lecture was recorded and sent to Nouwen by Mrs B. B. Shipe.

Prayer: the way to a transparent life

Item consists of a sound recording of Nouwen speaking at the Eighth Annual Missouri Liturgical Congress at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri. Nouwen speaks about prayer and the effect that prayer has on our ordinary lives. Nouwen says that the world "loses its opaqueness and becomes transparent" to individuals who regularly pray.

Recording of Henri Nouwen on compassion

Item consists of a sound recording of a talk Nouwen gave at the Hogan Center on compassion. Nouwen is introduced by Joe Kelly, the Director of Continuing Education at the Hogan Center. The talk was in three parts: SR10 v1 contains parts I and II. SR10 v2 contains part III.

Care and the elderly

This item consists of an audio recording of Nouwen discussing care for the elderly. Nouwen asks us to consider two questions, which he formats his lecture around: "what do the elderly teach us about care?" and "how do we provide care for the elderly?" Nouwen talks about the need for compassion, the natural impulse to care, and the wisdom that the elderly have to share.

Personalizing theology: conversations on ministry

Item consists of three audio cassettes: Staying Alive: Alone and Together (1 hr. 22 min.); Being Faithful: Engaging the Powers (48 min.); Praying: Faith to Faith (51 min.). Nouwen speaks on the first cassette (SR13v1). Nouwen is in conversation with the interviewer, as well as two other interviewees: Sister José Hobday and Bob Warner.

Recording of introduction to the spiritual life lectures

Item consists of amateur recordings of lectures from Introduction to the Spiritual Life taught by Nouwen at Harvard Divinity School in Spring 1984. The two audio cassettes contain a number of lectures from this course. SR24 v1 contains lectures on Patiently, Waiting, and In Expectation. SR 24 v2 contains lectures on Temptation and Downward Mobility.

Recording of Henri Nouwen on the spirituality of peacemaking

Item consists of an amateur recording of Nouwen speaking to a group of CPE (Christian Pastoral Education) supervisors. He was scheduled to speak about Vocation, Temptation and Formation in Ministry but after 5 weeks in Switzerland decided to speak on the subject of peacemaking, specifically the church's response to the call for peace.

Item consists of an amateur recording of Nouwen speaking on peacemakers. It is unknown where or to whom this talk was given.

Recording of Henri Nouwen at the E.A.N.E. congress 85

Item consists of a sound recording of Nouwen speaking at the E.A.N.E. Congress in 1985. SR50 v1 is entitled "Wholeness and Prayer: Carrying the Burden that is Light"; SR50 v2 is entitled "A question and Answer Time with Henri Nouwen".

Introduction to the spiritual life: L'Arche

Item consists of an audio cassette of a lecture by Nouwen at his Introduction to the Spiritual Life course at Harvard Divinity School in Spring 1984. During this lecture Jean Vanier was the guest lecturer and spoke about L'Arche.

Recording of moral re-armament international conference 1985: making a world of difference: Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., June 15-23, 1985

Item consists of two audio cassettes (SR70 v1 and SR70 v2) recorded at the conference. SR70 v1 is entitled "Closing the Fundamental Gap: An Evening with Fr. Henri Nouwen and other speakers". Nouwen speaks on side A about living the life of listening to God using as his theme the verse in scripture 'perfect love casts out all fear'. Nouwen closes the day with a prayer on side B. Nouwen does not speak on SR70 v2.

Recording of following Jesus: a set of three audio tapes

Item consists of three audio cassettes SR74 v1, SR74 v2 and SR74 v3. The recordings are based on six talks given during a retreat in Cork, Ireland in June 1986. Nouwen focuses on the core themes of the Gospel beginning each talk with the appropriate Gospel reading. He then develops the themes showing how one can apply them in a practical way to one's own life. SR74 v1, side 1: "The Invitation" - 'Come and See' based on Jn. 1:35-39 plus the beginning of "The Call" - 'Follow me' based on Lk. 5:1-11; side 2: "The Call" continued. SR74 v2, side 1: "The Challenge" - 'Love your Enemies' based on Lk. 6:27-35; side 2 "The Challenge" continued plus "The Cost" - 'Take up your Cross' based on Lk. 9:23-26. SR74 v3, side 1 "The Reward" - 'My Joy be with you and your joy will be complete' Jn. 15:1-17; side 2 "The Promise" - 'I will be with you always' Mt. 28: 16-20.
