Personal files

This series consists of a curriculum vitae and a single piece of memorabilia, a program for the fifth annual frosh review presented by the Students’ Association of Carleton College in the fall of 1956, just as Dr. Bissell began his presidency of the College.

Personal correspondence

Includes hundreds of letters sent to Christine from her mother between 1946 to 1958. Originally from Scotland, Christine Gray married Claude Bissell in September of 1945 and immigrated to Canada soon afterward. These letters, although one sided, will give good insight into this experience and the continued relationship to family in Scotland.

Education and teaching files

This series contains annotated student handbooks, programmes for football and hockey games, and an issue of the Undergrad, all from Brian Land’s undergraduate years; course notes for an MLS college universities library administration course taught largely by Margaret Cockshutt in 1955-1956; a file Land compiled while chairing the constitution revision committee of the Alumni of the Library School (1954-1959); and lecture notes for two courses he gave in the Library School, Ontario College of Education (1961-1963); and correspondence relating to his appointment as its director (1964). There is a final file relating to his Labour Gazette indexing project for the federal Department of Labour (1956-1958).

Dr. Land kept only selected lecture notes. For others, see Series IV of B1993-0026.

Subject files

This series consists of A-Z subject files that are primarily related to Rodney Bobiwash's professional activities as a First Nations and Anti-Racist activist. The series documents the far-right political movement that took place in Toronto, and throughout Canada, in the early and mid-1990s. The series includes profiles of far-right racist agitators, white supremacist newsletters and propaganda such as the Heritage Front's Up Front, documentation of the KKK in Canada, and documents related to the anti-racist resistance mounted by Bobiwash and other activists. The series is arranged alphabetically by subject, with records dating from 1980 through to 1997. Photos of Aryan Fest 1992 can be found in Series 10, Boxes /001P and /004P. Series 1 provides a comprehensive overview of the far-right movement in Toronto, and in Canada, during the 1990s, and an understanding of the role Rodney Bobiwash and other First Nations/anti-racist activists played in combating right-wing hate groups.

Personal and biographical

Files in accession B2005-0001 contain correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues received by Prof. Russell over more than four decades. Unlike the other series of correspondence described below, the contents of letters, cards and notes is more familiar and personal in nature and generally deals with non-professional activities such as trips, seasonal greetings, family matters, neighborhood and church activities, activities of friends and colleagues. Early correspondence discusses his appointment to the University of Toronto as lecturer (1958) correspondence with Oxford University regarding the M.A. exams, and appointment as assistant professor (1965). Some copies of Prof. Russell’s replies are included with incoming letters. Topics among the subject files include the Bathurst/St. Clair Task Force, Hillcrest Neighborhood Resources, Ontario Liberal Association, University Settlement, and Wychwood Park.

Files in accession B2017-0006 contain records related to the personal life of Prof. Russell. Material covers awards received, family vacation property (Minnicog Company of Jarvises), family reunions, memorial addresses and services for colleagues, and a convocation address.

Book reviews (G.M. Craig)

Gerald M. Craig donated a number of books to the University of Toronto Library which contained a variety of inserts. These have been removed and listed below, along with the name of the book in which they were found.

National Research Council

Series contains is composed of records dating from McKay’s time at the National Research Council. During the Second World War, the organization was mobilized to support the Allied war effort. As a result, most of the series’ records relate to military research and development. Canadian Army Operational Research Group (C.A.O.R.G.) reports compose approximately half the files that make up the series. These reports cover subjects ranging from blast measurements for anti-tank mine clearance to the number and distribution of Japanese paper balloons in North America. There are also two summary reports on Japanese balloon incidents.
The remainder of the textual and graphic records are made up of committee minutes, general Department of Defence documents, and a short paper on Canada’s part in the development of the radio proximity fuse, which McKay contributed to as assistant to project leader Professor Arnold Pitt.

Also included in this series are the remains of a Japanese paper balloon. Paper balloons, also known as balloon bombs, were a by-product of an atmospheric experiment by Axis scientists, which discovered a powerful air current traveling across the Pacific at about 30,000 feet [1]. Taking advantage of this knowledge, the Japanese military developed what may well have been the first intercontinental weapon in the form of explosive devices attached to paper balloons. These balloons were released in Japan and carried along the Pacific by a jet stream, ultimately finding their way to North America’s West Coast. Although the Japanese are thought to have released as many as 9,000 paper balloons, only 1,000 or so are thought to have reached North America, resulting in a total of six casualties [2].

Student activities

Personal correspondence with friends and University officials, brochures, flyers, pamphlets, and reports relating to courses in Caribbean studies created and collected during Mr. Pieters undergraduate years (B.A. Political Science, 1993) at New College. Also included is a file on New College Alumni Association containing copies of reports, etc relating to the provostial review of the college, 1996. This series also includes photos documenting his activities as a student including social events, meetings, dinners and his graduation.

Correspondence

Correspondence is mainly with colleagues regarding on-going research and results. Included is some correspondence with Dr. Ken Fisher, Dr. Scott's associate.

Professional correspondence

This series is comprised of professional correspondence, incoming and outgoing, between William and his colleagues and/or students. Correspondence is usually filed by the person's name but some files reflect the type of correspondence ie. recommendations, references, applications. The correspondence relates mainly to research endeavours being undertaken with colleagues or students, meetings or symposiums in which Williams was participating, visits from international colleagues, recommendations of students for post-graduate scholarships or employment positions and applications from students wanting to study under Williams.

Correspondence

This series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence arranged chronologically. Included is some personal correspondence but most is professional correspondence with colleagues on varied academic and administrative topics including exhibits, issues on teaching architecture, research and design philosophy. Also included is administrative correspondence within the Faculty.

University College Literary & Athletic Society

Tony Clement was President of the "UC Lit", the students' administrative council of University College from 1981-1982. This series contains minutes of meetings, general and subject arranged correspondence, constitution revisions, and other files relating to functions of the Council such as elections, orientation, and finances.

General correspondence

General incoming and outgoing correspondence with mathematical colleagues throughout the world but mainly in Canada and the United States discussing mathematical theories, progression of research as well as talks, visits and informal meetings.

Correspondence is loosely arranged chronologically with one file devoted solely to correspondence between Hull and Dr. Edsger W. Dijkstra of the Technological University of Eindhoven (Netherlands) and one devoted to the discussion of computer arithmetic.

Biographical

This series contains curriculum vitae, career related correspondence regarding job offers, tenure, promotions, pensions, sabbaticals; the awarding of grants including applications and supporting documentations; biographical profiles submitted to Who's Who in America; and requests for financial support for travel.

Professional correspondence

This series consists of professional correspondence arranged chronologically. The correspondence provides a comprehensive overview of Professor Nowlan’s activities as an economist, teacher, administrator and researcher from 1964 to 1998. Topics include: academic computing, conferences, environmental education, library automation, political correspondence, publications, research grants, sabbaticals, scholarly support, super computer, university appointments and university budgets.

Research notes

Over the course of forty years, Dr. Biringer established himself as leading researcher in electrical engineering, especially in the areas of non-linear circuits, electromet and electroheat processes. These notes appear to have been taken for his own research, for use in lectures and in relation to his numerous consulting activities. Additional notes, related directly to lectures being given or to consulting activities, appear in those series.

His earliest research is not represented in this series which contains notes, experimental data, and a few articles relating to particular research topics. The principal areas covered are arc furnaces, channel induction furnaces, heating coils, electron beams, electro-magnetic stirring, and frequency changers.

Research Files (general)

Consists of general research files used by Dr. Paul A. Bator in the writing of his Within Reach of Everyone, a history of the School of Hygiene.

Correspondence

This series contains, in addition to letters, a wide range of material associated with the ongoing production of the Atlas: notes, memoranda, reports, brochures, partial drafts of the manuscript, photoprints and maps. The arrangement is generally chronological, except where otherwise noted.

Consists of family biographical information on the Rhodes ancestry, submissions to American and Canadian Who’s Who volumes

Questionnaire

In 1993, Ms. Heaton conducted a mail survey to medical school library directors to gather information on reference services. This series consists of records documenting the questionnaire such as correspondence, draft questionnaires, and raw data. The series has been divided into subseries.

Series consists of minutes of Belleville Division of the Board for the Examination of Candidates and Probationers for the Ministry, 1868-1869; minutes and other records re probationers of the Conference Board of Examiners, 1875-1902; minutes of District meetings, 1903-1923, 1925; minutes of Faculty of Theology,1873-1881, 1912-1928; minutes of joint meetings of Faculty of Theology with the faculty of Knox College (United Church) and later Union Theological College, 1925-1928; and reports, 1872- 1875, curricula and degree requirements, n.d., 1874, and survey, 1899 ; book containing signatures of honorary Doctors of Divinity, 1912-1927.

Personal and biographical

This small series consists of biographical information, including copies of Professor Munro’s curriculum vitae, the family scholarship he created at the University of British Columbia, and most of his activity and appointment calendars from 1981 to 2012. Some of the entries on the last were made by him and others by his wife, Jeanette.

Biographical and personal

This series contains passports, daily agendas (58 volumes) and an address book, as well as files relating to the Banff School of Fine Arts, Professor Peers’ academic life, awards that he received and books that he wrote. Also included are a class photograph of the East Coulee School where Peers taught and was principal from 1939-1942, personal correspondence, photographs of Peers with friends, travel documents and records relating to his 90th birthday and the memorial service held upon his death. The series concludes with a file of records relating to David Rayside, a U of T professor and close friend of Peers.

The “biographical information” file [/003(04)] contains, amongst many other items, several pieces that Professor Peers himself penned between 1980 and 2002 about his family and background and his years as a high school teacher. Included with this is a CD from one of his nieces, Bev Swanton, titled “Acadia Valley Homecoming 2012”, that celebrates the hamlet, the surrounding farms (including that of the Peers family) and includes the centennial parade.

Education and career

Series consists of records relating to Prof. Cook’s secondary and post-secondary education and career, including grant, fellowship and some project files.

Education records include secondary school certificates and exam results, her application for admission to the University of Toronto, course syllabi, reading lists, examinations, notes on nineteenth-century thought by Prof. A.S.P. Woodhouse, and Prof. Cook’s convocation program. Employment records include letters of offer, contracts, clippings, evaluations, and correspondence. Grant and fellowship records include applications, correspondence, reports, and clippings.

Series also includes project files relating to Prof. Cook’s work with Representative Poetry Online and the Online Poetry Classroom Project of the Academy of American Poets.

Biographical files

This series consists of records documenting Mary O'Brien's life and career as a nurse and midwife in Glasgow and Montreal, and her subsequent academic career as a feminist philosopher. Includes: articles and reviews of Mary O'Brien; records related to her involvement with the Feminist Party of Canada; letters from faculty, staff, academic community-at-large, and former students in support of Mary O'Brien for the 1987 OCUFA Teaching Award; sound recordings of an interview and awards ceremony; and obituaries and tributes to O'Brien following her death.

Personal/biographical

This series contains material relating to Prof. York’s life. It includes a curriculum vitae from 1998 and a copy of the U of T National Report on Derek York and his work with laser probe argon-argon dating.

Research files (general)

This series consists of the general files that Mr. Grenville assembled in his attempt to write Dr. Solandt’s story. It begins with a variety of biographical information on Dr. Solandt, including curriculum vitae, tributes and obituaries, his memorial service, press clippings, and an article about him. This is followed by grant applications, a project outline, correspondence, and files on sources, family history, and Dr. Solandt’s activities (including summaries of diaries), arranged alphabetically. The principal areas of activity covered are the atomic bomb/nuclear weapons, Canadian National Railway, Defence Research Board, forestry, medical research, operational research, the Science Council of Canada, and ‘voyaguers’. The photographs associated with some of the files have been removed and stored separately.

Personal and biographical

The material in this series consists of copies of Professor Franceschetti’s curriculum vitae, correspondence on his gaining Canadian citizenship in 1979, a folder of greeting cards and a copy of his 'dottore in lettre' thesis from the University of Padua (1963), and two certificates.

B2008-0023 consists of resumes, short biographical notes and activity reports documenting Prof. Rayside.

B2013-0015 consists of records from Prof. Rayside’s time as a university student, with most material documenting his undergraduate degree at Carleton University. This series contains correspondence, notes, drafts, submitted essays, press clippings, photographs and application forms documenting both his academic work and his extra-curricular activities including student council, the Political Science Student Union, the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Teaching and Learning and his work on the student residence constitution. Files are arranged chronologically by degree, and by activity within each degree, with academic coursework at the front and extra-curricular activities at the back. There is one file at the beginning of the series containing souvenirs unrelated to his early education.

B2017-0024 includes two short biographies on David Rayside, one of which was a contribution to MyOntario in 2017.

Personal and biographical

This series contains copies of Professor Flynn’s curriculum vitae and some correspondence, both personal and professional and including letters of reference, and examination questions for his undergraduate work in Arts at the University of Toronto in the early 1940s. Included are three photographs and a satirical drawing of his receiving his doctorate from the Sorbonne.

Harold Keith Box

Personal records of Dr. Harold Keith Box including correspondence, lecture and research notes relating to his career in dentistry and as research professor in peridontology in the Faculty of Dentistry.

This series consists of two files containing his curriculum vitae and clippings, some correspondence and published articles on or about Prof. Harney. Included are copies of newspaper clippings quoting his views on Italian Canadians, notices of awards and honours for his book Dalla Frontiera alle Little Italies among others, and a review of posthumously published essays entitled If One were to write a history…Selected writings by Robert F. Harney. Edited by Pierre Anctil and Bruno Ramirez.

Correspondence

This series contains correspondence received by Fredericka (or Frieda) before, during and after her marriage to William Dale and correspondence from her children following the death of her husband in 1921. The letters prior to her marriage predominantly document the period after graduation from Queen’s University when she attempted to find employment as a teacher or companion and her courtship by William Dale. The correspondence from William Dale does not begin until January 1900 when she is in Saranac Lake, New York, and after breaking off her engagement to Jack Munro. In addition to describing his growing love for Frieda, William also describes his teaching duties at McMaster University and his family and life in St. Marys.

The correspondence after their marriage indicates that they were frequently separated, with William teaching in Toronto or at the farm in Blanschard Twp while Frieda stayed with her parents in Cornwall or Kingston. From 1905 to his death in 1921, correspondence from her husband and some Ryckman family members concerns the birth of their children, his participation in the local government in St.Marys, farming matters and trips to Toronto. There is a file of condolence letters on the death of William Dale and includes letters from Maurice Hutton, W. S. Milner (University of Toronto), and F. H. Wallace (Victoria College).

From 1923 to 1930, Margaret (“Marnay”) and then Frances (“Fran”) wrote regularly to their mother while attending the University of Toronto. These letters describe the day to day university life from a woman’s perspective – the lectures, residence life, social activities and include impressions of friends and teachers. The letters from Frances should be read in conjunction with her diaries (See Sous fonds 2, Series 1). It should be noted that there are no letters for 1929, and the 1930 letters are mainly from Frances while she worked at Jasper Park Lodge during the months of June to August and from Margaret describing her trip to Europe that same summer.

Personal and family

This series consists of files documenting Professor Friedland’s personal and family activities. It begins with a number of files documenting Friedland’s activities as a student and professor of law at the University of Toronto, his post-retirement professional and other activities. There follow files relating to members of his family, arranged by name, which focus broadly on family affairs and more specifically on personal lives, including professional and social activities, achievements, births, weddings and deaths. These are followed by other files containing correspondence sent home from England, Europe and Israel, and relating to the Friedland residences on Hillsdale Avenue and Belsize Drive.

The files contain correspondence, appointment books, certificates, curriculum vitae, greeting cards, honours, notes, notices, legal documents such as passports and wills, medical reports, programmes, postcards, photographs, and press clippings (including obituaries).

Administration

The records in this series contain the working papers of Prof. Andrews as a member of the Planning and Priorities Subcommittee of the Planning and Resources Committee of Governing Council from 1976 through his period as Chair (1978-1980). The Subcommittee was established on September 23, 1976 to replace the Planning Subcommittee for the academic session 1976-1977. Included are copies of agenda, reports, original correspondence and notes taken at meetings. Since Prof. Andrews also represented Erindale College, files relating to the College’s submissions to this Subcommittee will also be found.
