Letters from Jean Vanier

File consists of a letter from Jean Vanier and a form letter from (Bishop) Remi J. De Roo, regarding nominating Vanier for the 1989 Royal Bank Award. File consists of two letters from Jean Vanier, one a personal, hand-written note, and one a longer, typed newsletter. File also includes a copy of a very long, typed letter from Nouwen regarding Vanier's visit to Daybreak and Nouwen's ministry there.

Letter from Jim Towey

File consists of one letter from Jim Towey, describing the events of the past year of his life. Letter includes copies of two letters from Mark O. Hatfield, United States Senator from Oregon, and Bob Graham, United States Senator from Florida, to the Templeton Prize committee in Nassau, Bahamas, recommending Jean Vanier for the 1997 Templeton Prize. Letter also includes a copy of a proposal written by Towey and submitted to the MacArthur Foundation on March 19, 1996, titled "The Florida Commission on Aging with Dignity." Letter also includes a copy of an article by Towey titled "Human dignity and aging America" (Towey, H. James. L'Arche Audiovisual Collection

Collection consists of audiovisual materials featuring recordings of events given by and used by members of l'Arche International/Internationale. This material includes 1708 audio cassettes, 37 videocassettes, 8 film reels, and 78 audio reels. Much of the material features recordings created at L'Arche retreats internationally, such as the Covenant Retreat, Renewal Retreat, and Faith and Light Retreat. Prominent speakers include Jean Vanier, Henri Nouwen, Joe Egan, Robert Larouche and Sue Mosteller.

The majority of the audio files feature Jean Vanier, usually speaking at retreats. The film reels are recordings made and collected by L'Arche Daybreak, and feature a CBC film on Daybreak (from 1970), pilgramages and trips made by Faith and Light and Daybreak. There is also a film reel of Jean Vanier.

Collection has been arranged into eight series:

File consists of a letter from Martin Vernooy, writing from Madras, India, which also contains a paragraph written by Jean Vanier, who was visiting there. File also includes a copy of a typed letter from Nouwen.

File consists of a letter and a form letter from Don McNeill, of the Center for Social Concerns (Notre Dame, IN), including a copy of a letter from McNeill to Jean Vanier, a copy of a newspaper article about Vanier and a booklet regarding the Center.

File consists of personal correspondence to Henri Nouwen from Jean Vanier and reference material regarding Jean Vanier. Included is a “Tribute to Jean Vanier”; a “Report on the Mission to Daybreak to Evaluate the Place of Henri Nouwen as Priest of the Community by Fr. David Rothrock, Jean-Christophe Pascale and Jean Vanier”; copies of letters from Gail Stevenson to Jean Vanier regarding her daughter; a copy of “Jean Vanier’s Eulogy at Henri Nouwen’s Funeral”; contact information for Vanier’s assistant Barbara Swanekamp; and an email from Asmund Bjornstad to Sue Mosteller regarding the nomination of Vanier for the Nobel Peace Prize accompanied by proposal and Vanier’s curriculum vitae.

Second file folder consists of reference material regarding Jean Vanier’s participation as the leader of the Vigil at the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury. Included is promotional material and articles about the event; copies of the transcripts from Vanier’s first and second vigils; and a copy of an August 1998 letter written by Vanier to the L’Arche International community in which he mentions the Lambeth Conference.

Faith and Sharing Bulletins

The series consists of Faith and Sharing bulletins for the years 1977 to 2012. The bulletins generally contain a short letter of introduction by the Secretary and the Co-ordinator of the Faith and Sharing Federation, agendas for retreats and lists of participants. After 1979 the newsletters contain the minutes of meetings for the Executive Committee. The bulletin often features letters written by attendees of the retreats regarding their experiences, regional news items and copies of letters written by Jean Vanier and other members of the Faith and Sharing Federation regarding their experiences and reflections on the work of the Faith and Sharing Federation and the L'Arche communities. Also included in the series are reports of accounting balance sheets for the bulletins for the years 1997 to 2011.
