General files

Series consists of more than 16 000 letters received by Henri Nouwen between 1964 and 1997. Some files include photographs and other printed material sent to Nouwen as enclosures. In some instances, a copy of Nouwen's typed letter of reply is also included in the file.

Toronto music education

Series consists of materials relating to music education in Toronto, including at the Toronto Conservatory of Music and the Toronto College of Music.

Teaching and performance materials

Series consists of materials created by J. Churchill Arlidge in the course of his teaching and performance career, including sheet music with added vocal parts, written in his own hand, a practice record booklet that he published in Toronto in 1907, and the script and program for a concert that he gave in the 1880s.

Promotional materials and memorabilia

Series consists of a promotional booklet and poster, which feature the same photograph and include excerpts of newspaper reviews of his performances. Series also includes his wooden conductor's baton.

Correspondence and family records

Series consists of letters to J. Churchill Arlidge concerning his performances; family correspondence; Arlidge's wedding certificate; and a jewel pendant that belonged to his mother.

Photographs

Series consists of promotional and personal photographs of J. Churchill Arlidge, his family, and groups to which he belonged, including the Independent Order of Foresters (Arlidge was the High Organist); Christ Church at Deer Park, Toronto, Ontario; and a Grand Jury in 1907, which was appointed to investigate and make recommendations regarding public institutions and services in Toronto.

Audio and video recordings

Series consists of audio and video recordings from the Duke Ellington Society; Ron Collier’s Ellington lectures at Humber College (1980s); and, performances by the Ron Collier Tentet.

Performance, teaching, and personal records

Series consists of records relating to Ron Collier's performance career, including photographs from his time in the Kitsilano Boys' Band in Vancouver; correspondence with various musicians; photographs of his own quartet/quintet/dixtuor/ big band; and, photographs, correspondence, and other records from Collier's collaborations with Duke Ellington. Series also contains lecture notes and other materials relating to his teaching career at Humber College, where he taught composition and arranging (1974-1994). Series also contains some personal and family photographs, scrapbooks, and correspondence.

Compositions and arrangements

Series consists of Ron Collier’s arrangements and original compositions, mostly written for various jazz formations and big band. The series includes manuscript scores, parts, and some sketches for Collier's compositions and arrangements.

Audio recordings

Series consists of audio recordings of works by Talivaldis Kenins, including some recordings of performances conducted by Kenins and some world premieres. Many of the recordings were made for CBC broadcast. Others were performed at the University of Toronto. The series also includes three audio cassettes from a 1996 program on CJRT-FM that featured an interview with Kenins interspersed with recordings of his compositions, and recordings of Kenins' son George Juris Kenins performing the cello.

Postmortem documents

Series consists of documents created after Leslie Bell's death, including letters of condolence written to his wife Leona Bell; copies of his obituaries; and, documents pertaining to the Leslie Bell Scholarship, which was established in his name by the Leslie Bell Singers Alumnae in 1971. The award was created to support choral conductors further their professional careers and enhance their conducting abilities. The award is managed by the Ontario Arts Council (OAC).

Publicity, correspondence, and various other documents

Series consists of newspaper articles by and about Leslie Bell, concert programs, scrapbooks, documents from the Canadian Music Educators' Association (CMEA), and photographs. Bell wrote a column for the Toronto Star from 1950 until 1961, and many of his columns are included in this series. The CMEA documents are included as Bell was a founder of the association and its executive director from 1959 until his death in 1962. He also edited the Canadian Music Educator journal during that time. The series also contains a file of correspondence, photographs, and certificates for Bell's son L. Richard Bell.

Radio scripts, indexes, and notes

Series consists of radio scripts and notes for programs written by Leslie R. Bell in his role as a radio commentator for CBC and CFRB in Toronto. The series also contains indices that accompany many of these scripts for Bell's programs, including Audio, Speaking of music, Music about town, and Music won't hurt you. The series also contains notes from Bell's research for radio programs, lectures, and from his school days, including his notes for his thesis on art education.

Series consists of some original compositions and many arrangements by Leslie Bell, predominantly for choral ensemble, with some scores and parts for band or orchestra.

Series consists of correspondence with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Canadian Music Centre (CMC), Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council, performers, representatives of performing organizations, friends, and colleagues. The series also contains programs, Polish community activities, press notices and reviews, and notebooks and journals.

Concerts

Series consists of materials produced by the Aldeburgh Connection for each of their concerts, including the Sunday Afternoon Concert Series, held at Walter Hall, Faculty of Music, University of Toronto (1982-2013); the Recital Series at the Glenn Gould Studio, Toronto (1993-2013); the Discovery Series (also called the Young Artists Series), held at Walter Hall (1998-2011); the Bayfield Festival of Song (2007-2012); and various concerts performed on tour in North America and Great Britain. Each file contains the records created and used in the production of the concert, including promotional materials (programs, posters, and pamphlets); correspondence with musicians, sponsors, and venues; newspaper clippings of concert reviews; contracts with performers and venues; research notes; narrative scripts for the Sunday Afternoon Concert Series; scores annotated by Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata; arrangements and transpositions of songs; stage, set, and lighting designs; subscriber lists; and ticket sales records.

Recording projects

Series consists of correspondence, rehearsal schedules, recording take lists, budgets, and research notes, regarding the production of the Aldeburgh Connection’s recording projects, including one cassette and six compact discs. The albums include recordings from various Aldeburgh Connection concerts, recordings with musicians featured in these concerts, and recordings of compositions commissioned by the Aldeburgh Connection.

Promotional events and free concerts

Series consists of records pertaining to various promotional events and free concerts produced by the Aldeburgh Connection. The series includes materials for one concert by Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata prior to the official formation of the Aldeburgh Connection concert series, “Opera in the Drawing Room” (January 14, 1979). Each file consists of programs, scripts, scores annotated by Ralls and Ubukata, set and lighting designs, posters, and reviews.

Governance and finance records

Series consists of the administrative and financial records of the Aldeburgh Connection, including newsletters; correspondence regarding private donations, corporate funding, and government grants; financial ledgers and budgets; and, board minutes. As a registered charity, the Aldeburgh Connection was dependent upon donations, funding, and grants, in addition to revenue from ticket sales, to support each concert season. Donations after the end of the Aldeburgh Connection concerts in 2013 were given in support of the organization’s archival project, which included the creation of an online archive of sound recordings, digitized programs, and a database of their performance repertoire. The series also includes the letters of incorporation for “The Aldeburgh Connection Concert Society” and early promotional material used to obtain funding.

Menus types included placemat menus, single sheet menus, trifold and four fold, five fold and seven fold menus and menus in booklet style. Some menus are laminated while others are in vinyl enclosures. Menus range from take away and delivery to eat in and include wine lists as well.

Menus from hotels, cruises and airlines are also included in this series.

The series is divided into 6 subseries: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America. The division is based on the 7-continent model, substituting Australia as a continent and replacing it with Oceania for greater geographical coverage.

Translation and research

Series consists of material related to the research and textual studies of Prof. Venkatacharya, including its funding. Material includes notes and annotated texts, translations and transliterations, as well as corrections. Texts appear to be in Sanskrit with Telugu and Devanagari characters, though may also include other alphabets. Also included within the series is material related to the funding for research and publishing projects.

Correspondence

Series consists of personal and professional correspondence. Material includes communication with specific individuals, including Giuseppe Tucci, in addition to departmental communications and letters to publishers. Subject matter represented includes family matters and updates, supervisory responsibilities to students in both Canada and abroad, and reviews of publishing activity.

Chronological files (correspondence)

Series consists of material organized in chronological files, primarily comprised of incoming and outgoing correspondence. Material documents both the personal and professional life of Prof. Venkatacharya. A substantial portion of the material relates to Venkatacharya’s publishing activity as well as the transfer of texts for his research from various publishers, distributors, and libraries in India, particularly The Adyar Library and Research Centre. Additionally, documentation of his academic activity is covered through correspondence with colleagues.
Material also includes received correspondence from family members overseas and provides documentation of Venkatacharya’s various positions in India, Italy, and at the University of Toronto. Series also includes some coverage of his participation with various Toronto South Asian community groups, such as the Hindu Institute of Learning.

Records related to buildings and grounds

The Bursar's responsibilities with regard to property were initially the insurance of buildings and their contents. However, as the need for regular income became more urgent and evident, and as the University expanded and required more buildings, the Bursar's work likewise increased. The Bursar became responsible for the legal negotiations and accounting over purchases, sales and leases; and the supervision and funding of alterations and renovations and the construction of new buildings. Along with this, the Bursar dealt with property tax as the University was only exempt from this in respect to its property used for academic purposes.

Series consists of correspondence, studies, reports, appraisals, financial administration, agreements, plans, specifications and other records relating to the planning, expansion, renovating, maintenance, repair and construction work on campus buildings and grounds, as well as the establishment and funding of Victoria Theatre, the Isabel Bader Theatre, and the Vic Tennis Club.
