Radio scripts, music criticism, and program notes

Series consists of radio scripts, drafts and clippings of music criticism and reviews, and program notes. Between 1949 and 1963, John Beckwith was a regular freelance writer and staff continuity writer (1953-1955) for various CBC radio series and composer documentaries, which he researched, wrote, and in some instances, narrated. At the same time, Beckwith wrote concert reviews for the Globe and Mail (occasional, 1948-1949 and 1952-1953), for the Toronto Daily Star (regular critic, 1959-1962, 1963-1965), and record reviews for the Canadian Music Journal (associate editor, 1957-1962). He also wrote program notes for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (1966-1971).

Series consists of programs, posters, correspondence, notes, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, and other materials relating to performances, concerts, and events that John Beckwith participated in as a composer, performer, speaker, administrator, researcher, and/or script writer.

Music at Sharon

Series consists of programs, notes, correspondence, and John Beckwith's arrangements for the summer concert series "Music at Sharon." Lawrence Cherney founded the series in 1981 and Beckwith researched and made arrangements for the heritage program included each year. The concert series was held at the Temple of the Children of Peace in Sharon, Ontario and ran until 1990, sponsored by the York Pioneer and Historical Society. The 1991 series was held at the Sharon-Hope United Church in Newmarket, Ontario, sponsored by the Musical Heritage Society of Sharon.

Series also includes materials for a related production, "Musical Toronto: A Concert Party," which was part of the Toronto International Festival. The concert, also researched and arranged by John Beckwith, reused many of the arrangements that Beckwith created for Music at Sharon and featured many of the same musicians.

Rough notes and performance records

Series consists of Derek Healey's rough notes, including manuscript sketches and drafts, for his compositions, which he began to keep and maintain after a conversation with librarian Rollyn Morris at the University of Victoria. After 1999, when Healey began to compose on the computer (starting with Six Canadian Folk Songs, Set II, op. 86, these rough notes are fewer, as the majority of his "notes" were on the computer. These later compositions include printouts of the work's status about a week after it was started.

Series also contains performance records for Healey's compositions, including correspondence with performers, programs, posters, reviews, and other pertinent materials. Healey began collecting performance materials after arriving in Canada in August 1979.

Series also includes notes on Healey's compositions taken during and following lessons with Boris Porena (1962-1963) and his "favourite" notebook with sketch and reference material (e.g., Indian talas, piano struts, etc.) that he referenced and used regularly throughout his compositional career.

Series consists of miscellaneous short, non-opus compositions by Derek Healey, including manuscripts, transparencies, and master scores.

Series consists of manuscripts, transparencies, and master scores for original compositions by Derek Healey. Until 1999, Healey's manuscripts are handwritten; starting in 1999, Healey began to compose on a computer, and all future compositions are typeset.

Student records

Series consists of several subseries which include records from Cobourg: One subseries contains Registers, Directories, Marks, 1837-1946. The remaining subseries consist of student record cards. These cards often contain a photo of the student.

Records related to real estate

Series consists of correspondence, leases and other legal agreements, court documents, surveys, deeds, mortgage records, sketches, financial and other records, 1871-2009, relating to the administering of properties owned by Victoria and not used for academic purposes, and for maintaining Victoria's interest in property developments which affected the University. The records relate to insurance, including liability, and the planning and development, management and leasing, acquisition and sales of property, taxes, property disputes and litigation.

The architectural plans and drawings have been separated into Series 23.

The Bursar's responsibilities with regard to property were initially the insurance of buildings and their contents. However, as the need for regular income became more urgent and evident, and as the University expanded and required more buildings, the Bursar's work likewise increased. The Bursar became responsible for the legal negotiations and accounting over purchases, sales and leases; and the supervision and funding of alterations and renovations and the construction of new buildings. Along with this the Bursar dealt with property tax as the University was only exempt from this in respect to its property used for academic purposes.

Teaching

Series consists of records documenting Morgan’s teaching activities within the Department of Philosophy and the Women’s Studies Programme at the U of T.

Art Exhibit

Planning material, including budgeting, correspondence, and event information for the Ontario Japanese Canadian Centennial Art Exhibition.

Japanese Canadian Centennial

Planning material with notes for the various events organized by the Japanese Canadian Citizens’ Association to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Manzo Nagano, the first Japanese to settle in Canada. Most records were created in 1977, the year of the centennial.

Redress

Records created during the organization and fight for Japanese Canadian Redress. Records include NAJC agendas, media reports, and correspondence. Many of the meeting minutes and notes contain marginalia by Kanbara.

Annex

Information about the youth organization in Toronto, serving the Japanese Canadian community. Meeting minutes, agendas, flyers for events, and notes are collected by Kanbara.

AI Symposium

Planning material, notes taken at the conference, and information about a similar conference held in Vancouver. The symposium focused on Japanese Canadians in the arts.

Toronto Chapter, JCCA

Records from various events that took place in Toronto. Some records relate to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Center.

National Japanese Canadian Citizens’ Association

Primarily textual material created by the National Japanese Canadian Citizens’ Association (later the National Association of Japanese Canadians) and collected by Kanbara as he participated in the organization. Meeting minutes, agendas, notes, and correspondence between Kanbara and others from the organization are included, almost all with marginalia by Kanbara. Records date from around the Japanese Canadian centennial and then later in the early 1990s.

The Mike

This series consists of volumes of The Mike, the official student newspaper of the University of St. Michael’s College. The newspaper has been in operation since 1948 and has been published on a predominantly bi-weekly basis.

Yearbooks

This series consists of the various configurations of yearbooks published by the students of St. Michael’s College. Titles include: The Year Book of St. Michael’s College (1910-1931; 1934-1935), The Thurible (1932-1933; 1937-1948; 1950), Through St. Michael's with the Camera (1940-1942; 1946-1948), Keystone (1968), Windrose (1969-1970; 1980; 1982-1985; 1987-1995, 2022, 2023), The Sword (1995-1999).

Publications

Series consists of various publications about Father Donovan, the Donovan Art Collection, and artists included in the collection. Publications include articles, reviews, exhibition catalogues, promotional materials, and full-length issues of magazines and newspapers. The series additionally includes two published catalogue books of the Donovan Art Collection, along with a DVD of the OMNI Television show about the collection.

Although the series contains mostly original copies of different publications, the series also demonstrates Father Donovan's personal practice of cutting, arranging, and gluing various article texts onto blank paper for safe-keeping.

Artist Reference Files

Series consists of collected texts pertaining to artists within the Donovan Art Collection. Texts include articles, CVs, interviews, and exhibition catalogues. Currently, the series only consists of artist Meryl McMaster's reference file.

Stewardship Reports

Series consists of stewardship reports sent to Father Donovan from St. Michael's College. These reports outline Father Donovan's financial and artwork contributions to the St. Michael's College community, extending as far back as 1981.

Catalogue Planning Material

Series consists of documents and correspondences related to the publication of the 2010 Donovan Art Collection catalogue. Documents include rough copies of catalogue essays, correspondences between Father Donovan and catalogue editors, and shipping addresses of artists. Additionally, the series also includes several invoices and receipts for costs of the book launch, copyright, and printing.

The 2010 catalogue is the most recent printed overview of the Donovan Art Collection. Father Donovan's essays describe the collection's beginnings, as well as the artworks' engagement with the St. Michael's College community.

Art Loans

Series consists of documents relating to art loans of the Donovan Art Collection, including loan agreements, receipts, shipment notices, invoices, and more. Many loan agreements also include related correspondence from artwork borrowers.

Financial Accounts

This series consists of invoices and receipts regarding financial donations, art purchases, and other expenses of the Donovan Art Collection, as well as correspondences between Father Donovan and the art collection accounting team. Other documents within the series include opening and closing balances for both the Donovan Art Collection account and Endowment Fund account.

Art Collection Lists

Series consists of typed and handwritten lists outlining various visitors to the Donovan Art Collection throughout the years, as well as an inventory of the Donovan Art Collection and the location of artworks on the St. Michael's College campus.

Acquisitions and Tax Receipts

Series consists of various documents relating to purchased acquisitions for the Donovan Art Collection. Documents include invoices and receipts for artwork purchases, and costs pertaining to the artworks' appraisal, framing, transportation, and installation. Additionally, the series also contains several certificates of authenticity and tax receipts.

Correspondence

Series consists of various correspondences received by Father Donovan between 1990 and 2020, largely pertaining to the Donovan Art Collection. Correspondences include cards, printed emails, and notes sent from students, St. Michael's College faculty, collection visitors, artists, curators, and more. Some files include photographs and other printed material sent to Father Donovan as enclosures, as well as texts created by Father Donovan for different art events and lectures. In some instances, a copy of Father Donovan's typed response is also included in the file.

Photographs

This series contains photographs collected by Morley mainly for his research on the history of Neurological Surgery in Canada and his biography on Kenneth G. McKenzie. Predictably many of the images document neurology staff at the Toronto General Hospital (TGH). Included are group portraits of the staff in the 1950s as well as individual images of Sir Geoffrey Jefferson, Kenneth G. McKenzie, E. Harry Botterell. Later photographs document events or celebrations at TGH including Botterell Day in 1978, Morley’s retirement party in 1985 and the 75 yrs of Neurosurgery in Canada Symposium held in 1998. There are also 33 slides relating Toronto General Hospital history used by Findlay in his articles on the history of neurosurgery at the TGH, including portraits of Dr. C. L. Starr, Kenneth G. McKenzie, Harry Botterell, Bill Keith, Frank Turnbull, Joe Cluff, Charles Drake, Jessie Young, Bill Lougheed, Eric Linell and Ross Fleming. Finally, filed at the end, are photographs originally belonging to the TGH showing equipment and procedures in neurology in the 1960s. Many of these have annotations by Morley’s in order to highlight their significance.

Supervising Graduate Students and Research

This series contains records related to the work of students Professor Roots was supervising. The material includes correspondence, notes, drafts, grant applications and reports on student work.
