Student Journals

This series consists of the various student journals, newsletters, and other types of literary collections published by the students of St. Michael’s College. Material includes newsletters: The Michael, Ennui, The Seraph, The Bike, Coop News, SMC Clips, SMC News, The Mik, Newsletter of Saint Michael’s College, S.M.U.T, and The Adversary. Material also includes literary collections of poetry, photography, short stories, and formal and informal essays: The Journal, Graffiti, Gryphon, Rune, Saeculum, The Trireme, and The Grammateion. Lastly, material includes The Toronto Handbook of Humour, which compiled interviews with and essays about Toronto’s key comedians and actors in the comedy industry, and the student newspaper, Forum.

Financial Documents

Series consists of materials related to the sale of Dewart’s books, including publication agreements and royalty statements from his publishers, as well as materials relating to his personal banking, including trust company documents, checkbooks, saving account pass books, and banking statements.

Correspondence

This series consists of materials related to the professional and personal correspondence that Dewart collected throughout his life in the form of typewritten letters, written letters, postcards, printed emails, and greeting cards. This includes recommendation letters that Dewart wrote on behalf of colleagues and students, internal correspondence and memos related to the University of Toronto, and personal letters from family in Cuba.

Art Loans

Series consists of documents relating to art loans of the Donovan Art Collection, including loan agreements, receipts, shipment notices, invoices, and more. Many loan agreements also include related correspondence from artwork borrowers.

Artist Reference Files

Series consists of collected texts pertaining to artists within the Donovan Art Collection. Texts include articles, CVs, interviews, and exhibition catalogues. Currently, the series only consists of artist Meryl McMaster's reference file.

Faculty Material

This series consists of materials related to Dewart’s involvement with the Faculty of Theology, the Graduate Centre for Religious Studies, and the Institute of Christian Thought. This includes materials related to the PhD committees that he served on, the committees that he was involved in, the conference for the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Association, and the Vatican’s investigation of his book, The Future of Belief.

Course Material

This series consists of material related to the courses Dewart taught. Files for specific courses may include lecture notes, syllabi, reading lists, copies of course readings, class lists, course evaluations, and final examination booklets.

Group Grievance of 1994

This series consists of materials related to legal proceedings of professors O'Connell, Bilanuik, McSorley, and Dewart in filing a group grievance against the University of Toronto concerning the tenure of professors in the Faculties of Divinity and Theology. This includes correspondence, a report of the Grievance Review Panel, and legal documents used in the panel.

Emeritus Grievance of 1995

This series consists of materials related to a grievance that Dewart filed against the University of Toronto concerning the status and rights of professors emeriti. This includes correspondence, copies of university memorandums and policies that Dewart consulted, copies of archival materials, and the legal documents used in the Grievance Review Panel.

Financial Accounts

This series consists of invoices and receipts regarding financial donations, art purchases, and other expenses of the Donovan Art Collection, as well as correspondences between Father Donovan and the art collection accounting team. Other documents within the series include opening and closing balances for both the Donovan Art Collection account and Endowment Fund account.

Catalogue Planning Material

Series consists of documents and correspondences related to the publication of the 2010 Donovan Art Collection catalogue. Documents include rough copies of catalogue essays, correspondences between Father Donovan and catalogue editors, and shipping addresses of artists. Additionally, the series also includes several invoices and receipts for costs of the book launch, copyright, and printing.

The 2010 catalogue is the most recent printed overview of the Donovan Art Collection. Father Donovan's essays describe the collection's beginnings, as well as the artworks' engagement with the St. Michael's College community.

The Grievance of Professor Richardson

This series consists of material related to the dismissal of Professor Herbert Richardson from USMC and Dewart’s involvement in the case as his agent. Includes correspondence, legal documents compiled for research and to be used in the hearing, copies of Richardson’s case file and personnel file, and meeting minutes.

Manuscripts

Series consists of edited and unedited drafts, master copies, and publisher’s master sets of book chapters, entire books, articles, and academic papers.

Research Notes

Series consists of early drafts, outlines, and notes compiled by Dewart during the writing process of his books and articles.

Personal Papers

This series consists of material related to Dewart’s personal life. This includes pocketbooks, childhood materials, photographs, pilot’s flying log books from WWII, and some correspondence.

Acquisitions and Tax Receipts

Series consists of various documents relating to purchased acquisitions for the Donovan Art Collection. Documents include invoices and receipts for artwork purchases, and costs pertaining to the artworks' appraisal, framing, transportation, and installation. Additionally, the series also contains several certificates of authenticity and tax receipts.

Art Collection Lists

Series consists of typed and handwritten lists outlining various visitors to the Donovan Art Collection throughout the years, as well as an inventory of the Donovan Art Collection and the location of artworks on the St. Michael's College campus.

Stewardship Reports

Series consists of stewardship reports sent to Father Donovan from St. Michael's College. These reports outline Father Donovan's financial and artwork contributions to the St. Michael's College community, extending as far back as 1981.

Yearbooks

This series consists of the various configurations of yearbooks published by the students of St. Michael’s College. Titles include: The Year Book of St. Michael’s College (1910-1931; 1934-1935), The Thurible (1932-1933; 1937-1948; 1950), Through St. Michael's with the Camera (1940-1942; 1946-1948), Keystone (1968), Windrose (1969-1970; 1980; 1982-1985; 1987-1995), The Sword (1995-1999).

The Mike

This series consists of volumes of The Mike, the official student newspaper of the University of St. Michael’s College. The newspaper has been in operation since 1948 and has been published on a predominantly bi-weekly basis.

Reviews and Published Works

This series consists of copies of academic papers, essays, articles, reviews, lectures, and chapters that Dewart published or delivered at conferences as well as reviews published about Dewart’s books.

Reference Files

Series consists of card catalogs comprising the bibliographic information of articles, books, and editorials that Dewart consulted for research purposes.

Correspondence

Series consists of various correspondences received by Father Donovan between 1990 and 2020, largely pertaining to the Donovan Art Collection. Correspondences include cards, printed emails, and notes sent from students, St. Michael's College faculty, collection visitors, artists, curators, and more. Some files include photographs and other printed material sent to Father Donovan as enclosures, as well as texts created by Father Donovan for different art events and lectures. In some instances, a copy of Father Donovan's typed response is also included in the file.

Publications

Series consists of various publications about Father Donovan, the Donovan Art Collection, and artists included in the collection. Publications include articles, reviews, exhibition catalogues, promotional materials, and full-length issues of magazines and newspapers. The series additionally includes two published catalogue books of the Donovan Art Collection, along with a DVD of the OMNI Television show about the collection.

Although the series contains mostly original copies of different publications, the series also demonstrates Father Donovan's personal practice of cutting, arranging, and gluing various article texts onto blank paper for safe-keeping.
