Correspondence and family records

Series consists of letters to J. Churchill Arlidge concerning his performances; family correspondence; Arlidge's wedding certificate; and a jewel pendant that belonged to his mother.

Music manuscripts

Series consists of manuscript scores and parts for original compositions and arrangements by J. Churchill Arlidge, as well as manuscripts in Arlidge's hand for music by other composers, written out for performance.

Photographs

Series consists of promotional and personal photographs of J. Churchill Arlidge, his family, and groups to which he belonged, including the Independent Order of Foresters (Arlidge was the High Organist); Christ Church at Deer Park, Toronto, Ontario; and a Grand Jury in 1907, which was appointed to investigate and make recommendations regarding public institutions and services in Toronto.

Family records and correspondence

Series consists of copies of photographs and documents pertaining to Johnstone's family. Documents include correspondence between Mary F. Williamson and Helmut Kallmann of the National Library of Canada; a copy of the petition for divorce filed by Catherine (McGregor) Johnstone against her husband John Francis Johnstone, which was later withdrawn (January 8, 1979); a copy of an article in the Toronto Star (November 26, 1927) regarding Amelia Hart and her seven husbands (Johnstone was the fourth); a copy of a letter from Mary F. Williamson to Professor Carl Morey at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto regarding Johnstone and performances of his songs; a copy of Johnstone's obituary (February 25, 1913); and a copy of scanned portraits of Johnstone. The series also consists of electronic records, including scanned images from the Johnstone family photo album (ca. 1900).

Photographs

Series contains photographs collected, maintained, and/or accumulated by Kathleen Parlow. Photographs depict Kathleen Parlow's life, musical career (including photographs of the Parlow String Quartet), and travels to various places including Hawaii and Asia. Also includes photographs of various individuals including but not limited to: Kathleen Parlow; Minnie Parlow; Leopold Auer; Thomas Edison; Arthur Hinton; Harold Bauer; Samuel Gilbert Colt; Willen Willeke; Johan Halvorsen; Henry Scheadieck; Erich Wolff; Ernesto Consolo; Wanda De Stein; Mischa Elman; Marie Hall; and, Jascha Heifetz.

Teaching and performance materials

Series consists of materials created by J. Churchill Arlidge in the course of his teaching and performance career, including sheet music with added vocal parts, written in his own hand, a practice record booklet that he published in Toronto in 1907, and the script and program for a concert that he gave in the 1880s.

Annotated sheet music

Series consists of music for violin pieces by predominantly Canadian composers, which were written for and/or performed by Jacques Israelievitch. All music annotated by Israelievitch, including his bowings, fingerings, and other performance notes.

Personal records

Series includes various records collected, created, or maintained by Parlow throughout her personal life. Records include dinner menus and programs from events, promotional materials, financial and legal information, obituaries, passports, drivers' licenses, calendar, newspaper or magazine articles by Parlow, professional papers, and obituaries.

Research files and correspondence

Series consists of Ezra Schabas's textual research files for his biography of Sir Ernest MacMillan. Files include correspondence with Schabas, copies of correspondence with MacMillan, copies of newspaper articles and photographs, and copies of research on MacMillan by other individuals, including that by Keith MacMillan.

Sheet music collection

Series consists of annotated sheet music and manuscript copies of sheet music in Harry Culley's hand, which were predominantly used for performances by the Black and White Spotters (Harry and Ida Culley's two-piano, four-hands duo). Many pieces include precise timings, as the Culley's frequently performed on radio shows on CKCL, CFRB, and CBC from the 1930s to 1950s. Series also includes some dance band music used by Harry Culley in his positions as conductor of the Royal York Orchestra (1929-1930) and Music Director at the Royal Alexandra Theatre (1948-1955).

Series contains sheet music created and/or accumulated by Kathleen Parlow.

[Piano pedagogy volumes]

Series consists of two volumes (listed below) used by Edith McConica when she was learning, and later teaching, piano. Both volumes are annotated by Edith and her children.

Concert programs

Series consists of programs and other ephemera collected by Carl Morey, predominantly from performances that he attended in Canada, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Italy. Some programs also include ticket stubs, newspaper clippings, annotations by Morey, or program notes written by Morey. Several early programs are autographed by the performers.

Concert programmes

Series contains concert programmes dated from 1939-1958. Programmes reflect performances from Kathleen Parlow as well as the performances of the South Mountain String Quartet, Parlow String Quartet, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Trio, and many of other performers. Concert programmes are from a variety of locations worldwide including the United States, England, Finland, Belgium, Germany, Poland, and many other locations. Programmes are in black and white and colour. Some programmes have gold gilt edges as well as other visually interesting features.

Family and personal papers

Series consists of materials pertaining the Greta Kraus' family and her personal life. Items include the Meldungsbuch for Margarethe Müller (Greta's mother) from the University of Vienna (1898-1902); a Fink family tree and family history, compiled (in German) by Dr. Hermann Mark, 1996 (Greta Kraus' maternal grandmother was Amalie Fink); the order of service for Erwin G. Dentay's funeral (husband, d. September 29, 1973); draft articles by her brother Dr. Walther Kraus (in German); the funeral notice for Dr. Walther Kraus; Greta Kraus' travel diary (1941, 1945); and her passports. Series also includes handwritten testimonials (Zeugnis) of Miss. Anderson (1912, 1914), a student of Mrs. Mackenzie-Wood, from Dr. [Jean] Paul Ertel, music critic for the Berliner Lokal-Anzeiger.

78 rpm recordings

Series consists of the 78 rpm recordings from the Stratton-Clarke collection. The collection spans the entire history of 78 record production, including acoustic and electronic recordings, ranging from 7 to 14 inches in diameter. It consists predominantly of vocal recordings, representing the work of more than 1,000 different performers. Stratton and Clarke's collecting mandate focused on the Golden age of singing (pre-World War One), releases of the Mapleson cylinder recordings, Canadian performers, and early Russian recordings (pre-Revolution). Stratton also collected recordings by performers that he knew personally.

Photographs of musicians

Series consists of photographs of Canadian and European musicians from the early 1900s, as well as Giuliana Gattoni's collection of publicity photographs from the late 1980s and early 1990s, which predominantly consists of photographs of Canadian Opera Company productions.

Promotional materials and memorabilia

Series consists of a promotional booklet and poster, which feature the same photograph and include excerpts of newspaper reviews of his performances. Series also includes his wooden conductor's baton.

Musical compositions

Series consists of compositions and arrangements by Gena Branscombe, including published sheet music with inscriptions from the composer and manuscript copies of scores and parts.

Daybooks

Series consists of Kathleen Parlow's diaries for each year from 1905 until 1960, with the exception of 1924, 1927, and 1955-1957, and 4 notebooks. The notebooks include her record catalogue, repertoire lists, handwritten recital programs, and her appointment diary (1905-1941).

Publicity, correspondence, and various other documents

Series consists of newspaper articles by and about Leslie Bell, concert programs, scrapbooks, documents from the Canadian Music Educators' Association (CMEA), and photographs. Bell wrote a column for the Toronto Star from 1950 until 1961, and many of his columns are included in this series. The CMEA documents are included as Bell was a founder of the association and its executive director from 1959 until his death in 1962. He also edited the Canadian Music Educator journal during that time. The series also contains a file of correspondence, photographs, and certificates for Bell's son L. Richard Bell.

Photographs

Series contains photographs of Greta Kraus (professional and candid), Elizabeth Benson Guy, Beulah Bondi, Jon and Hatti Vickers, Lois Marshall, and various other friends, musicians, and family members.

Memorabilia

Series contains three-dimensional memorabilia objects, including three glass plate negatives from Kathleen Parlow's time in Petersburg; three framed photographs of Parlow's parents[?]; two metal stamps of Parlow with her violin; two framed photographs of Parlow (one as a young child); the National Award in Music medal from the University of Alberta; a family photo album, including a family tree; an Edison cylinder record of Parlow playing Nocturne, Op. 9, no. 2 in E-flat Major by Chopin (recorded 1913); an Edison 78 RPM record of Parlow playing Melodie by Tchaikovsky; and, 2 audio cassettes with recordings of the Parlow String Quartet. Series also includes drawings and watercolours of Kathleen Parlow.

Series consists of miscellaneous programs, predominantly for concerts that took place in Toronto.

Press records

Series contains material from newspapers and magazines which relate to Kathleen Parlow, her students, and articles written by Parlow. Articles may be cut out or contained in their complete original source, or in scrapbooks. There are also quite a few articles that have been transcribed by hand, in some cases translated from the original language. Some are also typed. Additionally, there is a whole scrap book of articles about her students, and several loose articles about her students, specifically, Gisele MacKenzie (LaFleche).

Programs

Series consists of programs from performances by Emmy Heim, as well as various programs for performances by Heim's students at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and for performances that she attended by her colleagues.

Music manuscripts

Series consists of manuscript scores dedicated to, copied for, or copied by Emmy Heim. Scores include repertoire that Heim performed at various recitals and concerts, as well as music written for Heim by students of Arnold Schönberg, who she likely met while performing at his Verein für Privataufführungen, and who—like her—emigrated to the United Kingdom in the 1930s.

Programs and magazine articles

Series consists of programs for performances of compositions by Gena Branscombe, magazine articles on her, and copies of her membership cards to various music and non-music associations. The series also includes a program and poster for a 100th anniversary concert at The James Room, Barnard Hal, Barnard College, Manhattan (November 15, 1981).

Performance, teaching, and personal records

Series consists of records relating to Ron Collier's performance career, including photographs from his time in the Kitsilano Boys' Band in Vancouver; correspondence with various musicians; photographs of his own quartet/quintet/dixtuor/ big band; and, photographs, correspondence, and other records from Collier's collaborations with Duke Ellington. Series also contains lecture notes and other materials relating to his teaching career at Humber College, where he taught composition and arranging (1974-1994). Series also contains some personal and family photographs, scrapbooks, and correspondence.

Memorabilia

Series consists of materials relating to Harry and Ida "Claudette" Culley, particularly as pertains to their piano duo, the "Black and White Spotters." Materials include photographs of the duo, newspaper clippings with performance announcements, a script from one of their appearances on Arkansas Salute, CKCL radio (July 26, 1934), a fan letter from Ida Baker (April 8, 1940), a poster from the performance at the Royal Opera House in London with Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon (August 30, 1937), and articles by their granddaughter Joanne Culley about the duo and their sheet music collection (2021-2022). Series also includes a copy of Joanne's novel Claudette on the keys (Crossfield Publishing, 2021), which is based on the lives of Ida Fernley and Harry Culley.

Compositions and arrangements

Series consists of some original compositions and many arrangements by Leslie Bell, predominantly for choral ensemble, with some scores and parts for band or orchestra.

Performance records

Series contains programs from concerts that Greta Kraus performed in or attended, lecture notes on the topic of "the art of singing", newspaper clippings relating to Kraus or her family, and audio recordings of three concerts. The programs include the memorial tribute to Greta Kraus in Walter Hall (May 8, 1998) and "The Greta Kraus Schubertiad" produced by the Aldeburgh Connection (May 9, 2006 at the Glenn Gould Studio). Recordings include the memorial tribute; a concert produced by the Aldeburgh Connection ("Greta's Choice, January 16, 1994); and, "Celebrating Greta Kraus" (September 23, 1993). The series also contains a summary of her principal career dates, and two articles written by Thomas Hathaway: "Greta Kraus: 'A Crazy Career - Upside Down from A to Z'" and "What is a Song, How do You Sing it and What is Tradition all About?: Lois Marshall and Greta Kraus on Music-Making."
