This sub-series contains extensive original raw data collected on the !Kung San in the Dobe area of Botswana between 1967-1969 by Nancy Howell. Most importantly this series contains two sets of original data sets: 1)Howell’s original interview notes and photographs (taken by anthropologist Richard Lee) for all 846 participants (/001 and /002); 2)the completed questionnaires for all the women in the study that focused on marriages, childbearing, deaths of children and husbands (005). There are also other data collected relating to the !Kung kinship network and genealogies as well as tabulations of data done as late as 2000. This data formed the basis of Howell’s 1979 book The Demography of the Dobe !Kung which was republished in 2000. It also served as a resource for future research and collaboration centered on these hunter gatherers.

In 1985, as a result of the tragic death of her son and a graduate student while in a field trip in Botswana, Howell delved into the issue of the health and safety of anthropologists in the field. Records include early papers, committee reports, correspondence and responses from anthropology departments worldwide. It also includes the collection and tabulation of raw data, the results of which were published in Howell’s 1990 publication Surviving Fieldwork: Health and Safety in Anthropological Field Work. A copy of the report can be found in this series as well. published in 1990 by the American Anthropological Association.

Subseries consists of 5 PDF files (577 pages) documenting the extensive file the RCMP kept on Dr. Franklin from 1949-1984. It is presumed that more recent records were withheld for privacy reasons.
