Department of Biological Sciences

Subseries C.5, Department of Biological Sciences, covers the years 1988 through 1990 and 1995. The subseries includes a report on the Division of Life Sciences and several issues of a newsletter.

Office of Admission and Student Recruitment

The subseries B.11 Office of Admissions and Student Recruitment covers the year 1986. The Office of Admissions and Student Recruitment is responsible for recruiting and processing enrollment for new students of the university. The subseries includes one booklet.

Gallery

The subseries D.3 Gallery covers the years 1980 through 1981 and 2006. The subseries includes a handbook, event cards, and an exhibition book.

Department of Historical and Cultural Studies

Subseries C.10, Department of Historical and Cultural Studies, covers the years 1976 through 1981. The subseries includes handbooks, timetables, reports, proposals, curriculum materials, educational television lecture schedules, course guides, journals, and other material.

Department of Management

Subseries C.12, Department of Management, covers the years 1975 through 1976 and 1996. The subseries includes a newsletter for management and economics as well as a handbook and programme description for the co-operative programme in public administration.

Department of Anthropology

Subseries C.3, Department of Anthropology, covers the year 1973. The subseries includes two issues of the Journal of Symbolic Anthropology, edited by Erik G. Schwimmer of Scarborough College.

Durham College

The subseries E.4 Durham College covers the years 1973 to 1977. The materials are related to courses offered by Scarborough College on the Durham College campus due to space restrictions at Scarborough College, as well as Durham College library services. The file is composed of program and course descriptions, memos, and other documents.

Department of Human Geography

Subseries C.11, Department of Human Geography, covers the years 1973 through 1974 and 1981 through 1982. The subseries includes a timetable and a guidebook for geography.

Microforms

The subseries F.2 Microforms covers the dates 1965 through 1995 and 1999 through 2005. The subseries includes microfilmed copies of various theses, many of them produced by students in the Geography Department. Also included are transcripts from the registrar’s office for all “current students up to and including Summer 1973”, all “non- current students which have been received from Faculty of Arts & Science as of January 1974”, and all ”transcripts for transfer & withdrawal students of Winter 72/73”.

Department of English

Subseries C.8, Department of English, covers the years 1970 through 1971. The subseries includes a play written by students in the course English B14.

Department of Sociology

Subseries C.17, Department of Philosophy, covers the years 1974 through. The subseries includes a sociological study of the Scarborough College student body, booklets, course evaluations, course descriptions, reports, curriculum change notices, reports, proposals, and other materials.

Assistant/Associate Dean

The subseries B.4 Assistant/Associate Dean covers the years 1969 to 1970 and 1984. The assistant or associate dean (the title changed several times over the course of the university’s history) has similar responsibilities to the dean. The assistant/associate dean’s files included here comprise correspondence from Assistant Dean J. Riddick and one academic handbook, published by the dean’s office.

Committees with Unknown Office of Origin

The subseries B.13 Committees with Unknown Office of Origin covers the years 1969 to 1993 and 1998 to 2003. Where possible, committee files have been placed with their office of origin. However, where the office is unknown, the committee files have been placed here in alphabetical order. If the originating office of a committee is discovered, the files will be moved from this subseries to their proper location, above. The files in this subseries include committee reports, minutes, agendas, and other documents.

Centennial College

The subseries E.3 Centennial College covers the years 1969 and 1974. The materials included here relate mostly to the short-lived idea that Centennial College and Scarborough College should be “twinned” to maximize resource sharing. The files are composed of minutes, correspondence, and other documents.

Department of Physical Education

Subseries C.18, Department of Physical Education, covers the years 1969 through 1990. The subseries includes handbooks, a departmental report, correspondence, and a 25th anniversary annual report.

Office of Advancement/Development Office

The subseries B.10 Office of Advancement / Development Office covers the years 1968 to 2006. The Office of Advancement is responsible for curating alumni relations, prospect research, facilitating gifts and planned giving, and fundraising. The subseries includes course calendars, alumni directories, and issues of the Scarborough College Alumni Newsletter (SCAN), the Campaign Quarterly, and ScarboroughLive.

University of the West Indies

The subseries E.6 University of the West Indies covers the years 1967 to 1968. The materials relate to a possible academic liaison between the institutions that would allow for an overseas study program, which eventually fell through. The files include correspondence and other documents.

Director of Physical Education

The subseries B.7. Director of Physical Education covers the years 1967 to 1991. The Director of Physical Education is in charge of athletics and recreation facilities and programming. The files included here incorporate information about classes and events as well as sign-up forms, and also memos and minutes.

Director of Educational Communication Systems

Subseries B.8 Director of Educational Communication Systems covers the years 1967 to 1971. The Director of Educational Communication Systems was in charge of the maintenance and programming of the television lectures used as an early teaching method at UTSC. The files included are mainly composed of lists of items for educational use.

Scarborough Regional School of Nursing

The subseries E.5 Scarborough Regional School of Nursing covers the year 1966. The materials relate to a request by the School of Nursing to use the new Scarborough College library. The file is composed of correspondence and other documents.

General Program in Arts and Science

Subseries C.1, The General Program in Arts and Science, covers the years 1966 through 1969. The General Program was the only available academic track for Scarborough College students during the first four years of operations. Students were given the option to pursue a degree in arts or sciences, and then given a set timetable covering a broad range of subjects in that discipline. The subseries includestimetables, course descriptions, examination results, memos, and other material related to the general program.

Communications & Public Affairs

The subseries B.12 Communications & Public Affairs covers the years 1996 to 1992, 2002, and 2005. The department of Communications & Public Affairs, composed in part from prior departments such as Publications Office and the Community Relations Office, is responsible for the outward promotion of the university’s image to stakeholders, including prospective and current students, through various media channels. The department also publishes the Annual Review, the annual student recruitment Viewbook, and other publications; it is responsible for the website and social media outlets; and it directs marketing and advertising of the university. The files in this subseries include issues of many Scarborough College/UTSC publications, including the Bulletin, UTSC Live, To Be Taken Internally/Internally Yours, Spectrum, and Inside UTSC, as well as other documentation.

Department of Physical and Environmental Science

Subseries C.14, Department of Physical and Environmental Science, covers the years 1966, 1976 through 1980, 1989, and 1993. The subseries includes schedules for educational television lectures, course descriptions, curriculum change notices, a journal issue for environmental science, and a handbook for chemistry.

Photographs

The subseries F.1 Photographs covers the dates 1965 through 1995 and 1999 through 2005. The photographs have been arranged by subject and then chronologically within subject, showing the campus and buildings, events, and individuals. Of note are the many construction and building photographs taken during the earliest phases of construction on the campus, as well as during the building period in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There are many images depicting the library, including a number of slides that show library teaching presentations. Also noteworthy are the depictions of campus events, which show a vast number of staff and students.

Faculty and Staff Organizations

The subseries D.9 Faculty and Staff Organizations covers the years 1965 through1991 and 2005. The subseries includes staff directories, meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, and other materials from the Faculty Association, Faculty Club, Staff Association, and various staff and faculty publications.

Scarborough-Erindale Technical Service (SETS)

The subseries D.2 Scarborough-Erindale Technical Service (SETS) covers the years 1965 through 1990. SETS was established in 1956 to provide technical services to the university’s new suburban campuses in a cost-effective manner. The subseries includes information about cataloguing, ordering, processing, serials, technical equipment, and book selection; also included are annual reports, monthly reports, statistics, and budgets.

Dean and Vice-Principal, Academic

The subseries B.3 Dean and Vice-Principal, Academic covers the years 1965 to 1971. The dean is the senior academic officer at UTSC. The Dean is responsible to the Principal for all academic and administrative decisions within his jurisdiction, which is campus-wide, and also ensures that there is coordination and alignment of UTSC’s academic activities within the broader context of the University of Toronto. Areas of authority include academic programming, campus development, appointment and development of faculty, career development of administrative staff, and the well being of students. The materials in this subseries were gathered during the administrations of the following Deans: S.J. Colman (1965-1971), W.E. Beckel (1966-1967), R.A. Manzer (1966-1969) and A.D. Allen (1968-1969). The dean’s files included here mostly comprise professional correspondence and other documents issued directly from the dean’s office.

Student Services

The subseries D.6 Student Services covers the years 1964 through 2006. Student services are defined as initiatives directed at the student population, but which are funded and generally run by the university (i.e. not students). The subseries includes statistics, student directories, Writing Center materials, brochures for residences, Cultural Affairs flyers and event calendars, Watts Lecture materials, orientation and convocation materials, and other materials pertaining to services offered by the university to students.

Registrar

The subseries B.5 Registrar covers the years 1964 to 1983. The registrar is in charge of student records. Typical duties include managing course registration, overseeing fee payments, and administering university regulations. The registrar’s files included here mostly comprise correspondence.

Extension Program

Subseries C.2, Extension Program, covers the years 1964 through 1971 and 1981. The Extension Program was the first program offered at Scarborough College, as it was offered by correspondence. The subseries includes course descriptions, correspondence, reports, and other material related to extension at Scarborough College.

Student Organizations

The subseries D.7 Student Organizations covers the years 1964 through 2009. Student organizations are considered to be services offered to students by other students, such as student newspapers. The subseries includes material from arts groups (drama, music, theatre), the Association of Part-Time Undergraduate Students (APUS), the Arts and Sciences Student Union (ASSU), the Scarborough College Student Council (SCSC) / Union (SCSU), the Students’ Administrative Council (SAC), the Scarborough College International Students’ Association, the Chinese Student Association. Also included are issues of the following student publications: Marooned, Dialectic, Apocalypse, SMU*T, Mindfield, Absolute Graffiti, The Underground, Mimesis, Balcony Square, Scarborough Fair, and others.

University of Toronto - St George and Mississauga campuses

The subseries E.2 University of Toronto – St George and Mississauga campusescovers the years 1964 to 1977 and 1983 to 1992. Though most of the material relates to Scarborough tangentially, its provenance lies within UTSC’s sister-campuses in downtown Toronto (St George) and Mississauga (previously called Erindale). Many of the items in the subseries are related to tri-campus policies or initiatives, such as early retirement for librarians or master plans, or are related to specific departments. The files are composed mostly of reports and other documents.

Trent University

The subseries E.7 Trent University covers the year 1964. The materials relate to the opening of Trent University, which took place the same year that Scarborough College was opened. The file includes various documents.

Scarborough College Council

Subseries B.9 Scarborough College Council covers the years 1964 to 1993. Scarborough College Council (now called the Council of the University of Toronto Scarborough) creates and amends the by-laws that govern the business of Council and its committees. Council, as distinct from its committees, exercises its legislative and related powers by judging matters of broad policy at an early stage of development, establishing a system of committees that provide consultation on policy and related matters, and providing a means by which members of Council and its committees may monitor the implementation of policy. Following the opening of Scarborough College, the Council also oversaw the addition of new buildings (materials relating to the construction of the original buildings, designed by John Andrews, can be found in Series A. Governing Council). The subseries is divided into several categories for ease of organization:

• Chairman, which contains correspondence of the Council’s Chair;
• Governing Documents, which contains drafts and final copies of the constitution as well as by-laws;
• Elections, which contains minutes, nomination forms, memos and correspondence;
• Minutes, which contains agendas and minutes from Council meetings from 1964 to 1994 as well as indexes to these minutes;
• Committees, which contains an alphabetical filing of documentation generated by a wide variety of committees set up under the Council’s purview;
• Plans and Studies, which contains various campus master plans, capital plans, and planning reports;
• Scarborough College Residences, which contains a report on the addition of student housing;
• Physical Education and Recreation Building, which contains reports detailing the need for such a facility;
• Scarborough College Phase II, which contains correspondence, site plans, section plans, floor plans, electrical details, and materials specific to the Bladen library;
• Arts Centre, which contains reports and correspondence (N.B. this proposed Arts Centre became known as Scarborough Hall, see below);
• Student Centre, which contains a proposal from the Scarborough College Student Council for a student centre, as well as an opening invitation;

• Scarborough Hall, which contains correspondence, reports, minutes, fundraising information, studies, materials from architects Brian Arnott Associates, Carruthers, Shaw and Partners Limited, and Lett/Smith Architects, and information about the financial problems faced by the project;
• Housing Phase III, which contains a feasibility study;
• Dead Centre, which contains concept drawings and proposals from Montgomery and Sisam Architects;
• Academic Resource Centre, which contains reports, financial information, specifications, correspondence, committee documents, change notices, topographies, floor plans, electrical plans, utility plans, reflected ceiling plans, landscaping plans, site plans, and presentation books from Montgomery Sisam Architects Inc.
• Phase 4 Residences (Joan Foley Hall), which contains correspondence, a design development report from Baird Sampson Neuert Architects Inc. and Montgomery Sisam Associates Inc. Architects, and a presentation book from Dunlop Architects Inc.;
• Pavilion, which contains a report;
• Science Building, which contains committee minutes, correspondence, reports, and other documents;
• Management Building, which contains a project planning report and a presentation book from Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg (KPMB) Architects;
• S&H Wing Balconies, which contains correspondence;
• Arts and Administration Building, which contains two presentation books from Montgomery Sisam Architects Inc.;
• Recreation Centre, which contains a presentation book from CannonDesign;
• Other Buildings/Unidentified, which contains plans and other documents for unidentified buildings, as well as materials relating to the front entrance drop-off, Miller Lash House, the Scarborough College Library; and
• Services, which contains materials for audio-visual services, student residence and conference services, the writing lab, and cafeteria and food services.

Superintendent

The subseries B.6 Superintendent covers the years 1963 to 1964. The superintendent is in charge of building services. Records from the first college superintendent, F.J. Hastie, are included here and comprise correspondence regarding the construction of the S & H Wings.

City of Scarborough

The subseries E.8 City of Scarborough covers the years 1963 to 1977 and 1985 to 1988. The materials relate to the surrounding community as well as the corporate body of the city. Subjects include by-laws that affect the university, transportation, postal delivery, ARTS Scarborough, and the Guild of All Arts, among many others. The files are composed of a wide variety of materials, including reports, correspondence, and other documents.

Principal

The subseries B.1 Principal covers the years 1963 to 1993 and 2004. The Principal of the University of Toronto Scarborough is the chief executive and chief academic officer of the university. The Principal is also a vice-president of the University of Toronto. The materials in this subseries were gathered during the administrations of the following Principals: A.F.W. Plumptre (1965-1972), D.R. Campbell (1972-1975), A.D. Allen (1976), J.E. Foley (1976, 1978-1984), S.J. Colman (1981), G.R. Williams (1984-1989), Paul Thompson (1989-1993), and Kwong-loi Shun (2004-2006). The files mostly comprise professional correspondence and other documents issued directly from the principal.

Library

The subseries D.1 Library covers the years 1962 through 2007. The library’s three incarnations – the Scarborough College Library (1966-1982), the Bladen Library (1982- 2003), and the UTSC Library (2003 to present) – are all represented. The UTSC Library and its predecessors function as a branch of the University of Toronto Libraries system. Particularly well represented is longtime head librarian John Ball. The subseries includes memos, correspondence of the chief librarian, minutes, agendas, and reports from various library-related committees, budgets and financial information, event information, space and facilities information, materials related to systems and services provided by the library, and various other materials.

History of Scarborough College (various sources)

The subseries E.1 History of Scarborough College (various sources) covers the years 1961 to 1966, 1973 to 1995, and 2004. The materials included have been compiled from various sources, most of which would not fit elsewhere within the arrangement schema, to provide researchers with a location where written histories of the campus may be found. Also included is primary research done by the founders of the college into the history of the surrounding area. The files are composed of articles, reports, correspondence, books, and many other materials relating to the history of the campus.

Clippings and Scrapbooks

The subseries E.9 Clippings and Scrapbooks covers the years 1963 to 2006. The materials form a collection of articles clipped from newspapers and magazines that relate to Scarborough College/UTSC, the University of Toronto, the university community, and various other tangential subjects. At the end of the series are eight scrapbooks, four of which continue to be housed in their original covers; these items were assiduously maintained and present a day-to-day reflection on perceptions of Scarborough College/UTSC. Many of the earliest clippings are concerned with the origins of the school and its physical characteristics, while later articles cover all manner of subjects: internal governance, community involvement, students, staff, and faculty, campus events, and many more. Also included are posters, pamphlets, flyers, and other materials relating to a wide range of campus events.

Department of Arts, Culture & Media

Subseries C.4, Department of Arts, Culture & Media, is undated, but the contents are likely from the 1980s. The subseries includes two course guides for the arts administration co-op program.
