Henri Nouwen Literary Trust and Henri Nouwen Society administrative files

Subseries consists of files relating to the administrative business of the Henri Nouwen Literary Trust and the Canadian branch of the Henri Nouwen Society including correspondence, reference material and newsletters. Due to the overlapping administrative support of the Henri Nouwen Literary Trust and the Canadian and American branches of the Henri Nouwen Society, records pertaining to the operation of these entities are not uncommon. Unless otherwise noted references to the Henri Nouwen Society can be understood as encompassing both the Canadian and American branches of the organization.

Topics in this series include: the selection and repackaging of Nouwen’s writing and talks for new publications; the establishment of the Nouwen Archives at the University of St. Michael’s College in Toronto, Ontario; Nouwen related articles, book reviews and events; copyright, distribution and usage permissions related to Nouwen’s work; the financial support of Nouwen related projects; legal agreements and paperwork pertaining to the management and settlement of the Nouwen Estate; the translation of Nouwen’s work; requests for materials or financial donations; and Nouwen's funerals. Included is documentation regarding the addition to Dayspring; the production and development of Journey of the Heart: the Life of Henri Nouwen; the development of books by Michael O’Laughlin, Michael J. Christensen and Rebecca Laird; reporting and budgeting information for the Oral History Project; and the permissions associated with Nouwen’s appearance on the Hour of Power at the Crystal Cathedral in 1992.

Speakers

Sub-series consists of 398 audio cassettes and 6 videocassettes featuring individual speakers. In some cases, the events are unknown, and the speaker was the most distinguishable characteristic for that cassette. The sub-series is arranged alphabetically by speaker. Some speakers include Gordon Cosby, Mary Cosby, Jean Vanier, Therese Vanier. There are many more speakers.

Other events

Sub-series consists of 168 audio cassettes and 9 videocassettes from other assorted events, talks, and retreats given by l'Arche International. These cassettes do not explicitly fit into the other series in the l'Arche International collection. They have been arranged according to the type of event whenever possible. Sub-series also includes a binder which functioned as a catalogue of the majority of the cassettes that were housed at l'Arche Daybreak. This binder reflects many of the same series, and is located in box 56.

Works about Nouwen

Subseries consists of material written and presented about Nouwen's life and works. This material includes newspaper articles, interviews of Nouwen, essays, and books. While some of this material was written before Nouwen's death, the majority of the material is dated after his death in 1996.

Henri Nouwen Literary Centre correspondence files

Subseries consists of correspondence files kept by staff at the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre (HNLC) as part of the management of Nouwen’s estate and the business of the HNLC. The files were predominantly created during the four years following Nouwen’s death, prior to the establishment of the Henri Nouwen Literary Trust and the incorporation of the Canadian branch of the Henri Nouwen Society. Due to the overlapping administrative support of the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre and the American branch of the Henri Nouwen Society, as well Sue Mosteller’s continued role with various L’Arche communities, records pertaining to the operation of these entities are not uncommon. Often accompanying the correspondence is reference material in the form of agreements, articles, brochures, reports, proposals, newsletters and biographical sketches. Files containing personal correspondence sent to Nouwen and presumably used as reference material by the staff of the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre appear throughout the series. In several instances business or personal correspondence that took place after Nouwen’s death between the contact and, most often, Mosteller or Kathy Christie also appear in these files.

Topics in this series include: planning and research regarding the management of Nouwen’s legacy and estate; the mission, goals and incorporation of the Henri Nouwen Society; the relocation and development of the Nouwen Archives; the publication of Nouwen’s unpublished and revised published works; the translation and use of Nouwen’s work and the associated royalties and copyright restrictions; the writing and publication of Nouwen related books by authors including Beth Porter, Michael Ford, Tim Jones, Deidre LaNoue and Michael O’Laughlin; Nouwen focused retreats, workshops, lectures, courses and memorials; the production of Nouwen related audio and visual projects; the design and launch of Nouwen related newsletters and websites; the funding and functions of the Henri Nouwen Stichting; responses to and reviews of Nouwen’s writing; Nouwen’s influence on Hillary Clinton; the operations of the Thomas Merton Center; and Nouwen’s appearance on Hour of Power at the Crystal Cathedral.

Henri Nouwen Literary Centre publisher files

Subseries consists of working files kept by Nouwen at his office at L’Arche Daybreak and added to after his death by staff at the Henri Nouwen Literary Centre (HNLC) as part of the management of his estate. The files consist primarily of correspondence related to Nouwen's published works and prospective projects, as well as publishing contracts, copyright permissions, translations, royalties, reprint rights and endorsements for books written by other authors. Publisher catalogues and newsletters, excerpts of Nouwen’s writing, book sale lists and a small number of personal letters appear throughout. Correspondence between Sue Mosteller and others regarding outstanding projects at the time of Nouwen’s death and newly proposed projects shortly after his death are also included.

The collective produced these materials for poems, images, ideas, and passages that personally resonated with its members. These prints are distinguished by the notation 'Dreadnaught Broadside', which appears somewhere on the page.

Over 90 different poems, passages, and quotations are featured in the subseries, and the majority of prints are single copies. The subseries also includes the 52 Pickup 76 poetry collection, which brought together 52 poems from 52 emerging poets (see File 1).

Sub- series consists of 9 files containing typed and handwritten notes related to Watson's personal and professional reading and academic research, including extensive bibliographic references found on loose paper, cigarette packages and scraps of paper. The sub-series has been arranged chronologically where possible, however, due to the ephemeral nature of much of the material and the tendency of Watson not to date her notes, the bulk of the material can only be given broad date ranges.
