Postcards

Subseries includes a collection of postcards. Some of the postcards are blank, others were written or sent by Kathleen Parlow. Postcards are in both black and white and colour.

Radio scripts and indices

Subseries consists of radio scripts written by Leslie Bell and indices for particular programs that Bell hosted.

Original compositions and arrangements

Subseries consists of manuscript scores and parts for original compositions, arrangements, and hymn settings by J. Churchill Arlidge. Pieces include those for flute and piano, voice and piano, medleys, choral works, pieces for orchestra, and others. Subseries includes Arlidge's early compositions and arrangements (ca. 1857-1863).

Choral manuscript music

Subseries consists of blueprint-style manuscripts, manuscripts written in ink or pencil, and copies of blueprint scores. Most of the manuscripts are Leslie Bell's arrangements of popular songs, show tunes, hymns, and other songs, with some original compositions. Information about the original composers, intended ensembles, dates, and where and when the songs were performed is not consistently recorded in the manuscripts' heading. The manuscripts are generally autographed with one of the following: Leslie Bell, Leslie Richard Bell, L.B., or L.R.B. The arrangements are predominantly for the Leslie Bell Singers (originally the Alumnae Singers), formed in 1939.

Photographs of faculty and staff

Subseries consists of promotional photographs of faculty and staff at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. The photographs were collected and used by the Faculty's publicity office in their newsletters, academic calendars, events calendars, brochures, and other promotional material.

Student-related press

Subseries contains newspaper and magazine clippings relating to the students of Kathleen Parlow. Specifically, many articles focus on her student Gisele MacKenzie (LaFleche).

Halvorsen discovery

Subseries consists of press articles relating to the discovery of the Halvorsen violin concerto (dedicated to Kathleen Parlow) in the University of Toronto Music Library. This manuscript was previously thought to be lost.

Family records

Subseries consists of records relating to Kathleen Parlow's family, including her mother, Minnie Parlow.

Subseries consists of season events calendars for the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. The events calendar was titled "Notes" starting with the 1988-1989 concert season.

Performances of music for violin and piano by Schubert

Subseries consists of recordings of music for violin and piano by Franz Schubert, as performed by Elyakim (Peter) Taussig, piano and Otto Armin, violin. The recordings are likely all from a concert given at the Timothy Eaton Memorial Church in Toronto and broadcast on CBC.

Photographs of students

Subseries consists of promotional photographs of select students at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, which were collected and used by the Faculty's promotions office. Most of the photographs are of students in the Opera School or students who were featured in the Faculty's newsletter for winning an award or competition.

Board meeting minutes

Subseries consists of meeting minutes, agendas, and related correspondence, budgets, and reports from and to the Board of Directors for New Music Concerts, including reports from the artistic director Robert Aitken.

Subseries consists of the financial ledgers and bankers records for New Music Concerts, showing the organization's expenses and revenue from administrative and operational activities, as well as payments to composers, performers, and venues.

Music by other composers

Subseries consists of music written by other composers and either collected by Derek Holman for reference purposes, or sent to Holman as a gift and/or for his feedback.

Early Russian recordings

Subseries contains correspondence, research notes, and discographies on various early Russian singers and recordings, predominantly from before the Russian Revolution. John Stratton had a particular interest in these recordings and sponsored various re-releases through Historic Masters.

Gifted photographs

Subseries consists of photographs autographed by the subject and inscribed to John Stratton from contemporary vocalists and acquaintances of Stratton.

Awards and certificates

Subseries consists of certificates and related documents, including photographs and correspondence, for awards and degrees that Derek Holman received, including his Doctor of Music from the University of London, honorary Doctor of Sacred Letters from the University of Trinity College, Order of Canada, and Canadian citizenship.

Board of directors

Subseries consists of meeting agendas, minutes, reports from various other committees, and correspondence from the Board of Directors of Esprit Orchestra (initially named Esprit Contemporain). Subseries also includes drafts of of the Directors' Manual and By-Laws.

Executive committee

Subseries consists of meeting agendas and minutes for the Executive Committee of Esprit Orchestra. The Executive Committee was made up of the President, Past President, 2 Vice Presidents, Corporate Secretary, and Treasurer. The Committee was established (along with committees for Finance, Management and Strategic Planning, Fundraising, Marketing and Communications, Volunteer, Program, Education, and Nominating) in an amendment to Esprit Orchestra's By-Laws (1989).

Repertoire of the Esprit Orchestra

Subseries consists of materials relating to the selection of repertoire for Esprit Orchestra, including correspondence, and music rental materials. Subseries also includes a summary list of Esprit repertoire (current to November 2006), which lists repertoire by composers and includes each composer's nationality, work's duration, number of repeat performance by Esprit, and whether the performance was a world premiere, Esprit commission, Canadian premiere, and/or North American premiere. Subseries also includes a list of repertoire performed by Esprit at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts (1986-2009), listed by concert, and statistical information (1982-1998) regarding Esprit's repertoire.

Rehearsal schedules

Subseries consists of rehearsal schedules for Esprit Orchestra and guest artists, including rehearsal times and places, and dress rehearsals.

Subseries consists of records, including correspondence with composers and reports to and correspondence with granting agencies, for works commissioned by Esprit Orchestra. Esprit received commissioning support from Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Laidlaw Foundation.

Creative sparks

Subseries consists of records, including correspondence, notes, rough stage plans, and rehearsal schedules, for the Esprit Orchestra educational programme "Creative Sparks". Creative Sparks provides hands-on performance and composition opportunities for students, who are mentored by composers. Their compositions are showcased in Esprit's New Wave Composers Festival each year.

Orchestrations

Subseries consists of parts from dance band orchestrations used by Harry Culley during his time as conductor of the Royal York Orchestra (1929-1930) and as Music Director at the Royal Alexandra Theatre (1948-1955). Many of the parts are annotated for performance, and some files include manuscript parts copied by Harry Culley.

Program notes for Colgrass' compositions

Subseries consists of program notes for Michael Colgrass' compositions, written by Colgrass, and script notes that Colgrass used to introduce compositions from the stage. Subseries includes program and/or script notes for the following compositions: Arctic Dreams, As Quiet As, Auras, Concertino for timpani, Déjà vu, Delta, A Flute in the Kingdom of Drums and Bells, Folklines, Hammer and bow, Memento, New People, Night of the Raccoon, The Schubert Birds, Snow Walker, Strangers, Te Tuma Te Papa, Urban Requiem, Variations for Four Drums and Viola, Wild Riot of the Shaman's Dreams, and Winds of Nagual.

Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra

Subseries contains recordings of Victor Feldbrill conducting the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO). Feldbrill wsa the music conductor and principal conductor of HPO from 1990 to 1996.

This series features faculty artists as well as guests, and usually feature small ensemble chamber music and vocal or instrumental recitals.
