Ledgers

Sub-series consists of cash books and ledgers kept by Nouwen and his staff between December 1981 and April 1997. The cash books were used to keep track of Nouwen's daily expenses between September 1982 and June 1987. The ledgers were used to keep track of Nouwen's expenses chronologically and by categories between August 1986 and April 1997. Categories in the ledgers include automobile, business meals, donations, food and entertainment, gifts to individuals, income tax payments, miscellaneous, office supplies, office supplies and equipment, personal, photocopies and photographs, postage/courier, promotion, purchase services, telephone, temporary help, and travel. Nouwen staff members involved with the material include Peter Weiskel, Connie Ellis, Lydia Banducci and Margaret Sutton.

Personal accountant files

  • Subseries
  • June 1981 - April 1995, predominant January 1989 - December 1994
  • Part of Henri Nouwen fonds

Sub-series consists of material sent by Nouwen's personal accountant (Joe Sarno) to Nouwen's office at Daybreak in January 1996. Includes the 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994 income tax returns and supporting documentation. Also includes permanent reference material from Nouwen's retirement accounts, health insurance, 1995 Visa statements, and the US Internal Revenue Service.
Joe Sarno was Nouwen's personal accountant from the mid-1970s until April 1995. He was based in Connecticut and became Nouwen's accountant when Nouwen was at Yale Divinity School. Sarno was responsible for Nouwen's income tax returns, American bank accounts, credit cards, and retirement funds. It is assumed that he was responsible for the bulk of Nouwen's financial activities before Nouwen's move to L'Arche Daybreak in 1987. However, since legislation only requires records be kept for seven years, the majority of the records he sent to Daybreak only go back to 1989. Completing Nouwen's 1994 tax return was Sarno's last responsibility as Nouwen's accountant.
According to correspondence found in box 248 file 1438, Sarno sent two boxes of material to Nouwen's office containing income tax records and permanent reference material. The material was found in large manilla envelopes with Sarno's handwriting on the outside describing the envelopes' contents. The envelopes were bound with elastics and did not appear to have been opened since being sent to Nouwen's office in January 1996.

Specific books excerpted include Intimacy, Aging, and Compassion.

Postcards, cards and prints

Sub-series consists of various blank postcards, greeting cards and reprints of artwork, including prints of icons, a collection of prints by Rembrandt van Rijn, and other reprints of mostly religious artwork. It is possible that Nouwen had intended to send these materials with correspondence, as there are several copies of some prints and postcards.

Weekly calendars

Sub-series consists of Nouwen’s weekly appointment calendars from 1975 to 1996. Most contain ephemeral material (including personal notes, reminders, invitations and miscellaneous information) which has been removed and placed in separate envelopes.

  • 1984 - 1995, predominant 1987 - 1991
  • Part of Henri Nouwen fonds

Sub-series consists of eighty files related to business dealings with publishers that Nouwen dealt with on an occasional basis. These files relate primarily to the publication of articles, requests to reprint passages from previously published books, articles and cassettes, requests for endorsements of books by other authors, and translation rights. In addition to business and personal correspondence, the files may contain business documents such as draft manuscripts of books, articles, endorsements and introductions, book cover mockups, signed contracts, royalty statements and publishers' catalogues. Of special note are the St. Anthony Press files which contain draft copies of the Jesus and Mary book and the homilies "Mary, Mother of the Suffering Jesus" and "Mary, Mother of the Priests", as well as the files "Novalis" which contain drafts of Nouwen's 1992 meditations for Passion Sunday and the First Sunday in Advent.

Correspondence with constituents, 1935-1936

Sub-series consists of Patrick O'Neill's correspondence with constituents, supporters, and government ministers for the period from 1935 to 1936 in his role as MP for the Mourne division of County Down as well as notes, official documents and newspaper articles regarding the affairs of his constituency.

Books about Nouwen

Sub-series consists of four books written between 1985 and 1994 about Nouwen or containing a chapter about Nouwen. The two books written in 1994 represent student theses-like material on Nouwen's life. The other two books reflect on the lives of many individuals; Nouwen is represented in one chapter of each book. The books have been described at the item level.

Collected audio cassettes

Sub-series consists of 54 audio cassettes collected by Nouwen. The sub-series contains commercial and non-commercial audio cassettes.

Postcards and icons

Sub-series consists of approximately 500 postcards and icons collected by Nouwen. The postcards are blank except for three which contain letters on the verso. Nouwen maintained the collection of postcards and icons in three plastic index card boxes. The first section contains postcards largely of a religious nature, including architecture churches, monasteries, etc. from around the world) and artwork by Van Gogh, Chagall, Rodin, Degas, Renoir, Barlach, and others, as well as postcards of New York. • 1966 - 1994, predominant 1983 - 1985
  • Part of Henri Nouwen fonds

Sub-series consists of administrative materials relating to activities which Nouwen performed as a university professor within the administrative and social frameworks of the academic setting. This sub-series has been divided into sub-sub-series according to each academic institution, namely:

  1. University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, USA.
  2. Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut, USA.
  3. Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
  4. Boston College, in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, USA.
    and,
  5. Regis College, the University of Toronto, Canada.
It is highly likely that Nouwen created administrative records while a professor at the Joint Pastoral Institute of Amsterdam and the Catholic Theological Institute of Utrecht between 1968 - 1970. However, these records have not survived.

Theology degree records

Sub-series consists of materials related to Nouwen’s time pursuing his doctoral (doctoraal) degree in Theology at Nijmegen University. It appears as though Nouwen received the degree conferred upon completion of the doctoral exams although his thesis was not accepted. Note of December 18, 2013: file 319 unequivocally suggests that Nouwen pursued a degree in psychology (or to be precise in the Social Sciences) in early 1971. See also file 329, box 290 which contains a more elaborate outline of the thesis in question.

School certificates

Sub-series consists of eighteen documents certifying Nouwen's completion of courses, degrees and programmes.

  • Part of Henri Nouwen fonds

Sub-series consists of published articles written by Nouwen between 1960 and 1996. A majority of the articles are dated between 1975 and 1996 probably because in 1975 Nouwen began transferring the articles for storage at Yale. The articles are in various formats including entire periodicals, offprints, clippings, and photocopies as originally saved by Nouwen. Specific publications include Pastoral Psychology, Sojourners, Harvard Divinity Bulletin, Feu et Lumiere, The New Oxford Review, National Catholic Reporter, Weavings, and Zaken die God raken. Articles from church newsletters and other sources with limited publication are also included. In addition to featuring unique writings, the articles also represent published material that has been excerpted, condensed, adapted and reprinted from Nouwen's books, articles, and conference speeches. This sub-series contains only those articles written by Nouwen which he collected and does not contain all of his published articles as is evident by several incomplete article series.
The files are arranged chronologically. Each file features one unique published article although photocopies of newspapers as well as business cards and letters indicating the source of the articles are also included. Each file/article has been described at the item level.

Manuscripts of novels

Sub-series consists of handwritten and typed drafts and manuscripts, metatext and relevant correspondence with editors related to Watson's two published novels, namely "Deep Hollow Creek" and "The Double Hook" and her unfinished unpublished novel "Landscape of the Moon". The files have been arranged by novel and then chronologically.

Manuscripts of short stories

Sub-series consists of handwritten and typed drafts and manuscripts of four of Watson's six published short stories, namely "Brother Oedipus", "Antigone", "The Rumble Seat" and "And the four animals..." and five unpublished short stories, featuring the characters Hania, Oedipus, Eurydice, Orpheus, Daedalus and Aesop, and a fragment of literary prose fictionalizing her experiences in Paris. There is no surviving documentation of Watson's first published short story "Rough Answer", which appeared in The Canadian Forum 18: 212 (September 1938): 178-180, nor "The Black Farm (A Modern Allegory)", which was first published in Queen's Quarterly 63:2 (Summer 1954): 220-228. The files have been arranged chronologically, frequently relying on the publishing dates of the short stories.

Broadsides and posters

In addition to producing chapbooks (see Subseries 1), the Dreadnaught broadsides were a core part of the Press' publishing focus and demonstrate a range of letterpress techniques. The collective produced these materials for poems, images, ideas, and passages that personally resonated with its members. These prints are distinguished by the notation 'Dreadnaught Broadside', which appears somewhere on the page.

Over 90 different poems, passages, and quotations are featured in the subseries, and the majority of prints are single copies. The subseries also includes the 52 Pickup 76 poetry collection, which brought together 52 poems from 52 emerging poets (see File 1).
