Shin Imai accession

Fonds is comprised primarily of articles and material advocating for Japanese Canadian Redress. Textual material from the formation and activities of the Sodan-Kai are also included.

Ken Imai accession

The majority of the material covers the period when Rev. Canon Imai led the St. Andrew’s congregation in Toronto. Photos of the congregation and special events are included. Some of his written work is also present, offering an insight into his relationship with religion and community. The material also reflects how the Japanese Canadians who relocated to Toronto after internment created community.

Michael Murakami accession

Accrual consists of photographs and negatives collected and taken by the donor’s parents, Aiko and David Murakami. Photographs are primarily from Aiko (nee. Kondo) Murakami and her family in Victoria, B.C. The photographic negatives are primarily taken by David Murakami. They include scenes of the Steveston fishing industry, and those who worked in it. The negatives also include images from the Japanese Canadian internment camps in Kaslo and New Denver, where the family was living. There are also some family photographs and accompanying negatives of the Murakami’s and their friends in Toronto, O.N.

Mike Murakami Papers

Contains printed matter from the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC); various newspaper clippings, books and pamphlets on Japanese Canadians and the redress movement (including several complete issues of Nikkei Voice); 6 video cassettes with redress-related content, plus manuscript notebooks from Murakami’s grandmother (in Japanese).

Gordon Hirabayashi accession

Videos consist of recordings of television programs about Japanese American and Japanese Canadian internment. Many of these cassettes feature Hirabayashi as a subject. Audio cassettes are primarily recordings of interviews conducted by Hirabayashi on Japanese American and Japanese Canadian internment. Other recordings are from the Religious Society of Friends annual meetings. Some recordings are of Hirabayashi speaking on radio channels about his experience during WWII.

Jack Itsuo Hemmy accession

The records are comprised primarily of photographs taken and collected by Jack Hemmy and his family. Textual records are also included.

Personal family records from both the Henmi’s and the Okazaki’s follow the first members to settle in Canada, their forced uprooting during WWII, and eventually settling in Toronto. Textual records tell how Jack Hemmy was uprooted as a young man and sent East, away from the rest of his family. Many family photo albums have been kept, spanning from the turn of the century and continuing up until the 70s and 80s, spanning four generations.

Records are also collected from the many community events held by the Japanese Canadian community in Toronto. Jack attended many diverse events related to the community and was often the photographer for them. These photographs span from the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, the Japanese Consulate, heritage events held at Ontario Place, and sports events. These records span primarily from the 1950s onwards, as the majority of them are from Jack’s time in Toronto.

Masaji George Tokiwa accession

The majority of the records are handwritten letters (written in kuzushiji) received by Tokiwa from Japan and friends across Canada. They are assumed to be from pre-WWII to after the war and his time in Toronto. Some photographs of the people of Ocean Falls, B.C. are also included. Due to the language skills needed to read these letters, no further or detailed descriptions have been created.

Shimizu Family accession

Contains photo albums and ephemera related to the Shimizu family and the work of Kosaburo and Hide Shimizu.
Kosaburo Shimizu was born in Japan in 1893 and immigrated to British Columbia in 1907 where he was employed as a houseboy while attending the Royal City High School. Upon high school graduation in 1913 he taught English at the New Westminster Japanese Methodist Church. Though his father wanted him to join the workforce to help support the family, Kosaburo Shimizu was determined to attend university. Though he debated attending university in Japan, when he learned that he would be subject to conscription if he returned to the country he decided to stay in North America.

Kosaburo Shimizu attended UBC in 1915 and continued his studies with an M.A. in English Literature from Harvard University in 1924. He was later ordained as a United Church minister and became the pastor of the Vancouver Japanese United Church in 1926. Throughout the 20’s and 30’s he worked to increase the Japanese Christian fellowship and bridge rifts between generations and cultures. During the Second World War Shimizu was relocated by the federal government to an internment camp in Kaslo B.C. After the war he moved to Toronto where he met and married his wife Hide Shimizu (née Hyodo) and founded the Japanese United Church’s work in the Church of all Nations.

Hide Shimizu was born in Vancouver on May 11, 1908 to parents Hideichi Hyodo and Toshi Hyodo. Hide completed her grade school education and teacher’s training in Vancouver, B.C. By the age of 18, she was the first and only Japanese Canadian to hold a teaching certificate. From 1926-1944 she taught classes of Japanese Canadian students at Lord Byng school in Steveston, B.C. She was instrumental in organizing the education of Japanese Canadian students in B.C. throughout the Canadian Government’s WWII Japanese internment programme. Following the war, Hide moved to Ontario where she married Rev. Kosaburo Shimizu in 1948. In Ontario, Hide became an active member of several Japanese Canadian interest groups, including the Nisei Church Board, the Nisei Women’s Club, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) and the Japanese Canadian Citizen’s Association (JCCA), the Momiji Health Care Society and the Nipponia Home for Japanese Canadian seniors.

Hide would later be recognized by the Canadian Government’s Women’s History Month as the first Japanese Canadian teacher. She was admitted to the Order of Canada in 1982 for her outstanding contributions to early Japanese Canadian education, and awarded the Order of the Precious Crown by the Japanese Government in 1983. Hide was also formally recognized by the NAJC and other Japanese Canadian groups for her lifelong contributions to Japanese Canadian society. She died in 1999 at the age of 91.

Hide Shimizu Papers

Contains official documents, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, photographs and other biographical material related to the life of Japanese Canadian Hide Shimizu and her family members. Includes material related to Shimizu's awards from the Order of Canada, the Order of the Precious Crown (Government of Japan) and the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC).

Greater Toronto Chapter of the National Association of Japanese Canadians accession

Contains membership lists, meeting minutes and agendas from many of the committees the Toronto NAJC had, and participated in. Much of the material covers the period when the community organized and sought redress for the internment of Japanese Canadians during WWII. Records relating to and created by the Redress Advisory and Assistance Committee are also included.

Abe Kabayama Papers

Contains printed material related to the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC) task force of First Nations Canadians, including meeting announcements and agendas; a small amount of material related to the Earth Spirit Festival held in Toronto in 1991; plus related correspondence. Also includes biographical and genealogical booklets on the Kabayama family, with photographs.

Shirley Yamada Papers

Photographs, slides and negatives taken during Japanese Canadian redress campaign rallies in B.C., Ottawa and Washington, plus audio recordings of redress-related radio programs.

Tashichi George Uyeno accession

The material is mix of textual materials encompassing many details of the Uyeno family’s life from mostly 1939 to 1947. Many early records where created from the daily business of Tashichi George Uyeno’s business, Richmond Trading Company. The records are intermixed with letters from Mary Uyeno, who aided the business from Japan. Her letters include business information but also more personal discussions about family matters. They offer a glimpse into the life of many Japanese Canadians who grew up in both countries, identifying as both Canadian and Japanese.

Records also include correspondence with the Office of the Custodian, as the Uyeno’s assets were seized and sold. There is also official notices from the Office of the Custodian notifying the family to move further east and eventually to Ontario. Letters from the later part of the 40s are in regards to the Bird Commission and the sale of larger assets, such as the family’s property in North Vancouver.

Susan Hidaka accession

Material is comprised mostly of textual records from the founding of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, and some celebrating the success of the Momiji Seniors Centre. Some personal records from Susan Hidaka’s life are also included.

The collection consists of 27 records (78 rpm), primarily made of shellac. Some of the records come with lyric sheets. Music is mostly popular Japanese songs from the 1950s. Artists include, but limited to:

Mika Fukuma accession

Material comes from multiple editors of The New Canadian, and operations of the newspaper. This includes material sent to the newspaper from The Japanese Canadian Committee for Democracy and other similar groups. Material from Thomas Shoyama date from WWII when he joined the Canadian Army. This material is from the Department of National Defence and are education material for learning Japanese, Japan’s military structures, and political history. Other material, collected and created by Kenzo Mori, relate to the Japanese Evacuee Committee, which he helped organize during Japanese Canadian internment. Kenzo Mori collected many publications, which have been collected here. Lastly, news and press clippings have been collected regarding the treatment of Japanese Canadians and Japanese Americans, along with Japanese soldiers during WWII. They date primarily from 1942 and cover both the USA and Canada.

Terez Hyodo accession

Records are primarily journals and newsletters collected by Hyodo, relating to Japanese Canadians. Some correspondence is included.

This fonds was acquired in six separate accessions in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2002.

The 1994 Accession is comprised of 5.7 m of records divided into 9 series according to subject matter reflecting the divisions that Peers maintained over his records.
These are: ‘Development of Canadian Broadcasting’, ‘CBC Pamphlets’, ‘CBC Research Monographs’, ‘Clipping files’, ‘Correspondence’, ‘CBC Publications’ ‘CRTC Papers and Documents’, ‘Applebaum-Hebert Committee, Caplan-Sauvageau Task Force’, and ‘Communications Studies, Conference Papers’.

The fifth series ‘Correspondence’ includes correspondence generated between 1947 – 1989 and generally relating to broadcasting in Canada and divided into folders based on subject and recipient.

The sixth series ‘CBC Publications’ includes CBC annual reports, and other CBC publications created between 1933 - 1993.

The seventh series ‘CRTC Papers and Documents’, includes academic papers, submissions to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Communications and Culture, and other textual records related to the CRTC created between 1981 – 1990.

The eighth series ‘Applebaum-Hebert Committee, Caplan-Sauvageau Task Force’ includes correspondence, academic papers, and task force and committee submissions related to the Applebaum-Hebert Committee (1980 – 1982), and the Caplan-Sauvageau Task Force (1985 – 1986).

The ninth series ‘Communications Studies, Conference Papers’ includes a collection of academic papers related to communications studies created by various authors between 1974 - 1993.

The 1995 Accession MS 95.035 is comprised of 2.7 m of textual records divided into 6 series according to subject matter reflecting the divisions that Peers maintained over his records. These are: ‘Correspondence and Research Notes’, ‘Pay-TV’, ‘Secretary of State, Department of Communications, Canadian Heritage, Parliamentary Committees’, ‘Statements and Memoranda, CRTC and CBC’, ‘Clippings’, and ‘Articles and Papers’.

The 1996 Accession MS 96.022 is comprised of 1.7 m of textual records related to The Friends of Canadian Broadcasting. The accession contains documents dealing primarily with the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting including documents related to the history of the organization from 1985 - 1996. Includes correspondence, Steering Committee memos and documents, and studies regarding Canadian broadcasting.

The 1998 Accession is comprised of 0.6 m of textual records related to The Friends of Canadian Broadcasting and created between July 1995 and December 1996. Includes correspondence with government and broadcasting officials, Friends of Canadian Broadcasting Steering Committee memos and documents, studies regarding Canadian broadcasting, and other related documents.

Accession 2003.004 is divided into 2 series according to format. These are: Textual Materials and AudioVisual Records.

The first series, Textual Materials, relates to Hirsh’s activities as CEO of Nelvana Ltd. It is divided into 7 subseries: Development, Legal, Business Affairs, Accounting, Production, Publicity & Distribution, and Photographs. This section also includes 117 pieces of original production artwork (storyboards, animation cels, backgrounds, etc.)

The second series, AudioVisual Records, includes 456 videocassettes and 10 audio documents related to the donor and Nelvana Ltd. Productions. The videos are primarily screening copies, though some document the various stages of production (producer’s cuts, alternative edits, demo reels) and others reflect Hirsh’s interest in animation from outside Canada.

2003.02 accrual

This fonds is divided into two series: ‘Textual Material’ and ‘Audiovisual Material’.
The first series, ‘Textual Material’, consists of nine subseries. ‘Press and Publicity’ consists primarily of published articles, profiles and reviews of the band between 1980 and 2003. ‘Correspondence’ consists of communications between members of the band and their management, and between management and record companies/promoters; this subseries contains numerous letters from celebrities, and spans the period between 1985 and 2001. ‘Legal’ consists of incorporation documents, contracts, and litigation; this subseries dates from 1984 to 2000. ‘Accounting’ consists of financial statements, royalty statements, invoices and receipts; this subseries dates from 1982 to 2000. ‘Creative’ consists of lyric sheets, poetry, string charts, scrapbooks, sheet music, and artwork; this subseries dates from 1975 to 1999. ‘Memorabilia’ consists of t-shirts, bandanas, displays, promotional postcards, and other items; this subseries dates from 1986 to 2002. ‘Posters’ consists of 67 posters advertising the band and particular concerts and recordings; this subseries dates from 1987 to 2002. ‘Photographs’ consists of photographs of the band and people associated with them; this subseries dates from 1981 to 2002. ‘Miscellaneous’ consists of 40 awards; this subseries dates from 1981 to 2002.

Accession 2006.001 consists of six series (determined by format), ranging from 1939 to 1998. These are: Textual-Archival, Textual-Published, Photographs, Audiotapes, Audio Discs-Archival, and Audio Discs–Commercial.

The first series, Textual-Archival, consists of correspondence, scripts, call sheets, schedules, cast and crew lists, programs, and clippings. These files are arranged chronologically by genre and production.

The second series, Textual-Published, consists of music scores (most of them annotated), books, and magazines.

The third series, Photographs, consists of production stills, promotional portraits, and family snapshots.

The fourth series, Audiotapes, consists of radio air checks, pre-recorded radio programs, rehearsals, and parts of opera performances.

The fifth series, Audio Discs-Archival, consists of recordings of rehearsals, auditions and radio air checks.

The first series, Textual Material, is chiefly made up of scripts, storyboards, production files, research files, correspondence, meeting notes, equipment files, technical drawings, bylaws, cast/crew lists, contracts and proposals.

The second series, Photographic Material, represents all periods of Spiess’ career, from his early portraiture and fine art images to his industrial/commercial work to production stills documenting his cinematographic work. Shot in Gimli and Winnipeg Beach, Falcon Beach is a co-production between Insight and Manitoba-based Original Pictures.

The sixth series, ‘Hatching, Matching and Dispatching: Pilot & Season 1’, includes textual records and ¼ in. tape, Betacam SP, CD, DAT, Digital Betacam, DVD, Floppy disk and VHS recordings pertaining to a half-hour comedy series produced for CBC in 2005 and 2006. The documentary includes footage from concerts in Brantford, ON, St. John’s, NF and Calgary.

The eighth series, ‘Jon Dore Show, The Pilot & Season 1’, features Betacam SP, CD, Mini DV, and DVD recordings of Canadian comedian Jon Dore’s 2007 show.

The ninth series, ‘Juno Awards, 2006 & 2007’, includes Betacam SP, CD, DA113, DA8, DAT, Digital Betacam, DPD113, DVC Pro HD, DV Cam, DVD, HD Cam, Mini DV, VHS and XD Cam HD recordings of the 2006 and 2007 Juno Award ceremonies. Fonds consists of material pertaining to three seasons of production of the 1hour television series Riverdale. The show ran from 1997 – 2000, and all 47 episodes were broadcast on CBC television. The collection consists of 207 boxes of material spanning all three seasons of the show. The fonds is divided into two series: Corporate Records and Post-Production Records.
The first series, Corporate Records, consists of 49 boxes. These include correspondence/memos, fan mail, budgets, scripts, promotional materials, financial and banking records, sponsor files, production and continuity stills, character files, legal documents, insurance documents, music cue sheets, and architectural drawings.
The second series, Post-Production Records, consists of 158 boxes. These include raw shoot tapes, raw audio tapes, audio stems, voiceovers, music, master mix audio, edits, various masters, interview tapes and promo reels. There is also a complete set of both VHS and DVD screening copies of each episode. Textual documents include sound notes/charts, editing/mix notes and credits.

The first series, Scrapbooks, consists of four oversized, handcrafted scrapbooks likely assembled by Susan Douglas. These scrapbooks document Rubeš’ European opera career, Rubeš’ North American career, Douglas’ career, and their family life.

The second series, Appointment Books, covers the period between 1955 and 2005. These include personal appointment diaries and day timers, as well as a ledger.

The third series, Textual Documents, was largely assembled by the Rubeš’ son, Tony. These files cover the period between 1928 and 2005 and include press clippings, reviews, personal correspondence, mementos, resumes, and biographies.

The fourth series, Photographs, consists of numerous publicity shots, production stills and photographs from 1940 – 2002. The subjects include fellow cast members, colleagues, and family members.

The fifth series, VHS Videotapes, includes several of Rubeš’ performances from the 1950s to 2005. These guest roles in movies and selected television productions characterize the sort of roles that Rubeš played later in his career.

2009 acquisition

The collection consists of roughly 20,000 audio disc records, all in 78rpm format. The recordings span predominantly from 1917 to 1942, when the Musician’s strike took effect due to disagreements between musicians and recording companies over royalty payments. Starting July 31st 1942, union musicians could no longer record. This lasted roughly two years, with various recording companies settling with the union at varying points between 1943 and 1944. Healey deliberately collected records from before this important date in musical history. The records are largely Jazz recordings, representative of the first twenty-five years of Jazz music, with Blues, Ragtime, Dixieland, Dance Band music, entertainment personalities, Swing, and many other genres and sub-genres of the era represented within the collection. Healey started collecting 78s by the time he was ten years old, and by the time of his death in 2008, had amassed roughly 30,000 78s of this kind. Upon his death, many of the more valuable records were sold to collectors from around the world, and thus this collection contains about 20,000 from his original collection. The recordings from this collection were used by Jeff Healey for his first radio show on University of Toronto’s CUIT, and his show on CBC radio, My Kinda Jazz, which also aired on Toronto-based radio station, Jazz.FM91.

The majority of the records are from American record labels, though there are also a fair number from the Compo Company Ltd., based in Lachine, Quebec, and its various offshoots, and some other Canadian companies. There are also some records manufactured in England, France and even Germany, though all are by American recording artists, and often by American record labels with branches abroad.

Based on the period, the majority of the records are likely shellac, not vinyl, but exact materials likely vary by manufacturer. There are also a small number of “flexible” records made from Durium, a patented blend of paper and resin, manufactured during the depression era, as cheaper alternatives to the standard shellac records. The collection also includes a small number of Edison Discs, also referred to as “Diamond Discs”, which are recognized for their distinctive quarter-inch thickness. Most records are unique in the collection, but there are some duplicates.

Prior to his death, Healey began digitizing his collection of records to mp3 format, and inputting information via iTunes. These digital files have not yet been acquired.

Heritage Minutes 2013 acquisition

Heritage Minutes began in 1986 after Charles Bronfman’s CRB Foundation conducted a survey that found many Canadians severely lacked basic historical knowledge of their country. Using similar advertisement ploys, he began to create history-based public service announcements with the help of Patrick Watson, Robert-Guy Scully, and Richard Ciupka under the CRB Foundation. These announcements, which would later be known as Heritage Minutes, followed six main criteria: 1. Intrigue us with Canada’s heritage; 2. Be producible within resources; 3. Be truthful within the bounds of dramatic license; 4. Reflect and celebrate Canadian social and cultural values: tolerance, fairness, courage, tenacity, resourcefulness, inventiveness; 5. Reveal origins; 6. Surprise, provoke reflection, re-examination, raise questions.

After pilot episodes and bilingual focus groups, thirteen episodes were released on March 31, 1991, airing on CBC and Radio-Canada. CRB Foundation continued to release Heritage Minutes, often with the help of the National Film Board of Canada.

In 1999, the short films were renamed Historica Minutes: History by the Minute after CRB Foundation created the Historica Foundation of Canada. The company changed names again in 2009 when the Historica Foundation merged with the Dominion Institute to become the Historica-Dominion Institute. The company was renamed again to its present name Historica Canada in 2013.

Heritage Minutes have been screened by many, including Cineplex Odeon cinemas, Universal Studios Home Video Canada, and VIA Rail. In 2003, Heritage Minutes made their radio debut in 90-second dramas. They have also been the bases for multiple parodies by Canadian comedians and television programs. The 1992 Heritage Minute Halifax Explosion was a Gemini award nomination, with Steve Danyluk as director of photography. To help encourage Canadian broadcasters to air the Minutes, the CRTC has deemed them as 150-per-cent Canadian content programming.

The Heritage Minutes are produced independently without any engagement from funders in script, direction or production. Since Heritage Minutes content is educational, networks have never received payment for airing them.

All stages of production are present in this collection. This includes camera original negatives, workprints, intermediate edits, visual printing elements, soundtrack elements, film release prints, video edits, video masters, along with photographic and textual production documents.

2015 acquisition

The accession is arranged into the four series ‘Gig’, ‘Audio’, ‘Video’, and ‘Order of Canada’, which correspond primarily with the format of the record and have further subseries.

Series 01: Gig Series: Consist of material relating her to many concerts, both within Canada and internationally. Date of performance, and venue are noted.

Series 02: Audio Series: Arranges by media format, and with further subseries based on media format and subject matter, this series captures the wide array of Anne Murray’s musical career. Material includes live recordings, commercially released material, special edition box sets, recorded interviews and demos, and television and radio recordings. The last subseries consists of early Edison Cylinders and a player from the early 20th century.

Series 03: Video Series: Recordings of the many performances and television appearances done by Anne Murray. These include appearances with Alan Thicke, The Mike Douglas Show, and The Merv Griffin Show. Award ceremonies where Murray was present have been recorded and included, as have various television specials.

Series 04: Oder of Canada Series: A framed certificate and accompanying textual records for the Order of Canada.

2015 acquisition

Canadian Talent Library (1962): The first set of music (10 disc LPs) published in 1962 by the Canadian Talent Library. The idea was created by radio managers at CFRB and CJAD so that Canadian artists could be easily accessible to radio stations. Other stations could purchase the set and be able to showcase Canadian talent using the high quality pressings. Though the set was expressly made for radio stations, select copies were given to notable Canadians. This copy, is noteworthy as it is embossed “Dr. Mabel G. Connell”.
The set includes LPs by Johnny Burt (solo), Howard Cable & His Orchestra, Vic Centro Sextet, Johnny Burt & His Orchestra, Rust Davis & His Orchestra, Bill Butler, Paul Grosney Group, Roger Pilon & His Orchestra, Alexander ‘Ragtime’ Read, and Howard Cable ‘Conducting’.

Canadian Adventure 1867-1967 (1967): Produced by J. Frank Willis and issued by the Ontario Teachers’ Federation. A one disc audio-drama depicting Canadian history. Track titles include “Confederation”, “Classroom Scene”, “Ernest Thompson Seton”, “Louis Riel”, “Almighty Voice”, “Edmonton Grads”, “Calixa Lavalee”, and “O Canada”. Voiced by Bruno Gerussi and Gordon Pinsent.

2015 Accrual

Shimizu’s home movies document multiple stages of his life, and the lives of Japanese Canadians during and around WWII. Titles with dates before WWII document Shimizu’s life and events at the Church in Vancouver. They also capture daily life and vacations as Shimizu traveled south through the west coast of the United States, reaching Mexico. During the war, his films are some of the few moving image documents of the Japanese Canadian internment camps. He also filmed some of his talks and meetings he had with other Japanese Canadians when he traveled east for the CCJC. After the war, his films capture typical family life after relocating in Toronto.
The collection also includes six reels of cartoons and shorts for consumer viewing.

The collection covers all points of the band’s career, from the early years, and then a large emphasis with material from the early to mid 2000s. All aspects of the workings of the band are present, from raw footage captured for music video creation, master mixes for their albums, and touring information.

The acquisition includes recorded footage for their music video “Young Lions” and other videos, digital files with lyrics, various artifacts including promotional patches, 2010 Independent Music Award, commercial CDs and DVDs of their work, audio master reels of select albums, various newspaper clippings regarding the band, and many textual records on tour information and expenses, royalty statements, photographs and print material for promotional use, financial statements, some personal records, and a large collection of posters.
