  • Autograph letter from René Descharmes [to Deffoux?], dated September 29, [1917]. Is responding to a previous letter from his correspondent – could meet with him at the Bibliothèque nationale if the matter is urgent.
  • Autograph letter with envelope from René Descharmes to Léon Deffoux, dated March 21, [probably 1918, according to the stamp on the envelope, which also bears the stamp of the Ministère de la Guerre, where Descharmes was working]. Descharmes thanks Deffoux for sending his last book about Flaubert. He is himself thinking about writing about Flaubert and the académie, but feels discouraged because of the war.
  • Autograph letter from René Descharmes to Léon Deffoux, dated June 15, [probably 1922, according to a note penciled by Deffoux on the upper left-hand corner] Descharmes asks Deffoux if he knows of any autographs of Flaubert. Descharmes is preparing an edition of Flaubert’s correspondence because the edition published by Fasquelle contains many errors.

Descharmes will use it in his edition of Flaubert – although he has to run to the printing shop because the book is being printed.

  • Autograph letter from Émile Zavie to Léon Deffoux, dated from Tiflis, July 12, 1917- the letter is numbered: «Lettre IV». He assures Deffoux that the Revolution in Russia was not bloody and that everything is calm; everything is very expensive; Russian soldiers are not prepared for freedom; may be going to Kiev.

  • Typed letter from Léon Deffoux to Bertrand de Jouvenel, dated August 7, 1929 - carbon copy, no signature. Deffoux would be delighted to meet with de Jouvenel; he lists a number of sources on Zola, and mentions that de Jouvenel should meet with Maurice Leblond, Zola’s son-in-law, and with the novelist’s daughter, Mme Leblond.

Does not have one to offer; is offering instead an article on war dating from 1900 or 1901, probably written for an American magazine, and still unpublished in France. Is sending a copy of a letter from Léon Daudet on La Débâcle. Is looking forward to discuss Deffoux’s manuscript.

Le Secrétaire général» - with an excerpt of the «Journal officiel du 18 novembre 1917» (typed) and clippings from the «Journal officiel du 28 novembre 1928». Because of a typo, the travellers using trains were told not to step out of the train when it was completely stopped (while it should have read, when it was not completely stopped). The typo was rectified eleven years after the first publication. LeBlond suggests that Deffoux could use this information for an amusing few lines in L’Oeuvre.

In the fall, the couple will move to Montbéliard, where the young man will be working for Peugeot.

LeBlond caught a bad cold during the burial ceremony of Batilliat. On 1st January, he fainted during a family reunion. He feels better now. Sends his best wishes for the new year.

About the address 28 rue Royale in Saint-Cloud: remembers that there was a printing shop at that address. Does not go out very much but would be happy to see him.
