File consists of two letters and two Christmas cards from Bob (Robert) Durback. File also includes a photocopy of one of the cards showing the cheque for Daybreak that was enclosed, a copy of an article about Merck & Co.'s drug Proscar, a copy of an article by Durback about a woman on his mail delivery route (Rosalia Feder Sarbey, also known as Cricket), two copies of an annotated bibliography of Nouwen's works, and notes handwritten by Nouwen for transcription to be enclosed with books and sent to friends of Durback.

  1. December 22, 2001, 3 p., typed, Manella expresses appreciation for the book "Seeds of Hope," and includes a copy of an email to friends of Rick and Gay Manella, recommending and praising "Seeds of Hope." Manella also inquires about meeting Durback.
  2. January 9, 2002, 1 p., typed, Durback expresses appreciation for Manella's letter, and surprise, since the book has been out since 1989. Durback also agrees to meet with Manella.
  3. January 13, 2002, 1p., typed, Manella agrees to drive to meet Durback. He also gives permission for Durback to share his musings and praise with people at L'Arche Daybreak.

File consists of correspondence between Robert Durback, Kathy Christie and Sue Mosteller regarding Nouwen related book projects, reproduction rights and the deposit of material at the Nouwen Archives. Included in the file are articles and an annotated bibliography of Nouwen’s work written by Durback; correspondence regarding a donation Durback made to L’Arche Daybreak; a list of Nouwen’s publications; copies of letters between Duback and various publishers; and two diskettes – one labeled “Durback Bibliograph” and the other “Henri Nouwen Completed Annotated Bibliography, Word Perfect 7 Windows”. File also includes Robert Durback's manuscript "Henri Nouwen: In My Own Words", published in 2001.

Typescripts of a spirituality of peacemaking

File consists of two typescripts, including a bound 112 page typescript for "A Spirituality of Peacemaking" that Nouwen sent to Robert Durback in the 1980s. Also consists of a fragmented copy of the same typescript entitled "Peacework: Second Edition" that contains pages 1-96 and 70-110. File also contains a copy of a letter from the Thomas More Book Club to Durback canceling his order for the book "Peacework" because it was not going to be published that year (1985).

Interview with Bob Buford

File consists of an interview with Bob Buford interviewed by Joe Vorstermans at the Leadership Network Offices (Dallas, TX). Buford lives in Dallas, TX and is the chairman of The Buford Foundation which holds wilderness camps for troubled youth. Buford was introduced to Nouwen through Malcolm Street of Elderly Care Inc (Fortworth, TX). Buford recounts experiences with Nouwen at the Foundation Conference (Toronto, ON) and The Gathering (Mexico) and through his subsequent work 'Mornings with Henri Nouwen'. Themes present in Buford's interview include 'Half Time', 'Finishing Well', Thomas Merton, Peter Drucker, Nouwen's contradictions and Nouwen as tortured. Photocopied pages of Walt Whitman's 'Song of Myself' with annotations and a note from Buford to Joe Vorstermans and a copy of the print created for Peter Drucker's 80th birthday is also in the file. Interview with Bob Durback

File consists of an interview with Bob Durback interviewed by Sue Mosteller at Durback's home in Cleveland, OH. Durback is a former monk and retired mail carrier. Durback's first experience with Nouwen was through articles in the National Catholic Reporter and 'With Open Hands'; Durback subsequently met Nouwen at the Genesee Abbey (Piffard, NY) and developed a lifelong friendship with him. Durback recounts visiting Nouwen at Yale, watching him perform the Eucharist and lecture at Yale and celebrating the anniversary of his ordination. Themes present in Durback's interview include failure, Trappist monks, Thomas Merton, prayer life, death, spiritual formation, John Eudes Bamberger, Vincent van Gogh, writing and his publications 'Seeds of Hope', 'Henri Nouwen: In my Own Words' and 'A Retreat with Henri Nouwen'.
