Jean Vanier, "Forgiveness / Peacemaking"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to share about forgiveness which is close to peace making, bringing people together from a reality of separation. I would call on you to reflect on how reconciliation and forgiveness can be lived in community. But today my focus will be on the personal reality of forgiveness.

Jean Vanier, "Looking at Our Fears ; Communion, the Basis of Our Life" - July 8, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I hope that during this renewal each of us will discover how beautiful we are and how much we are loved by God. We have a mission to discover our beauty. Many people don't believe they are loved by God. Children know they are loved but then what happens? We must also discover our brokenness, that the outer world is also our inner world. The challenge is to accept it rather than just be angry with it. So sometimes we can deny our beauty and sometimes our brokenness. The secret for humans is the transformation of brokenness into trust.

Jean Vanier, "Opening to the Pain and Chaos" - July 7, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: There is a 'plan' behind this renewal. These first few weeks is to open us up to all the pain in our world. It is there. We don't like it, we don't want it, we hate it, but it is there. Then through that to discover something about healing and compassion. Many people are overwhelmed by the reality of the pain in their lives today.

Jean Vanier, "The Journey Inward, the Journey Outward. Who is My Enemy?" - July 9, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The inward and outward journeys are fundamentally the same. We have to do both. To meet poverty outside of one self and to refuse to see our inner poverty is not possible. It's a question of walking into our own pain and into the pain outside. It's important that we do this somehow together. As we begin to see the pain on the outside we begin to see our helplessness, our frustration, our angers and fears--our inner pain. Do we deny our inner pain and then the outer too? Or as we accept the inner pain, do we begin to understand the outer pain?

L'Arche Renewal 1992

File consists of 39 audio cassettes featuring talks given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 18, 1992, in England.

Jean Vanier, "Shepherds, Servants of Communion" (part 3) - Friday, July 15, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Side Two starts with feedback from small group sharing. Then Jean speaks: How can we learn to comfort ourselves? We can always say that the fault is over there because there is no one comforting me. We have to discover how we comfort ourselves or how do we let the spirit of God comfort us. You have experiences of this when you had to call on your own resources. The answer somewhere is about prayer. Prayer is learning to comfort and shepherd ourselves or be shepherded by Jesus.

Jean Vanier, "Shepherds, Servants of Communion" (part 2) - Thursday, July 14, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We began this week on the theme of the poor as source of life. The poor who are crying out their pain and need. Are they just a pain in the neck and we have to get rid of them? This is the basic vision of a society based on a pyramid. They challenge us too much and our whole system of values. So we have been talking about the cry for communion of the poor, who call out our capacity for compassion. We will now keep on with how we are called to foster communion. If you are a shepherd, you must know what particular aspect of shepherding you are called to live.

Jean Vanier, "Shepherds, Servants of Communion" (part 1) - Thursday, July 14, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I just read a book by Br. Roger of Taize. One thing I loved was it said they changed the name of "Prior" of the community to the "Servant of Communion". It's a lovely name and we have to be really convinced that a leader of our communities is also the servant of communion. I want to talk about shepherding as being servants of communion. This is complex for us because very quickly we can become just administrators and not servants of communion. Thus we can be caught up mostly in organizing and doing rather than facilitating communion.

Jean Vanier, "Separation and Communion (B)" - Wednesday, July 13, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I would like to come back to we really don't know what communion is. But we have glimpses of it; we have a hope. We have much more an experience of collaboration and even more experience of separation. We you say to me prove communion is true, I can't. I have an intuition, a hope it is true. It's a hope of many people that it is possible. We are expressing a hope and a call that maybe communion is possible.

Jean Vanier, "Separation and Communion (A)" - Wednesday, July 13, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I feel that we are walking on a road together trying to discover something together. When we talk of the cry of the poor and their need and their pain, add on "of separation" because this morning we are going to talk about separation and communion. The poor cry their need, pain and separation and their cry for recognition, love and belonging. It's always a big question: who do you belong to? Who do we belong to? The question of belonging can be a painful one. The essential cry of the poor is the cry of their pain of separation.

Jean Vanier, "Passages" - Tuesday, July 12, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Are the poor a source of life or a source of death that should be got rid of? For people with handicaps we either push them into ghettos, kill them in the womb or else "normalize" them, which is a way of saying they are not different and don't need a special welcome. One f the big questions will be how to make the passage from being a source of death to a source of life? is it possible? If so, what is the conversion or passage necessary? This is not just an intellectual reality but a very personal one. It is not just a conversion to Jesus but also to Jesus in the poor. This is the final conversion.

Jean Vanier, "The Poor Source of Life" - Monday, July 11, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk this morning about something a bit crazy about the poor as a source of life. Is it true or not? In a way we are touching the heart of L'Arche. Are we just living in a dream or is that dream real. Is it really possible that someone like Vincent at L'Etoille can be healing? Then it also comes down to the question: can my poverty be healing? If it's true the poor can be healing, then my poverty also can be a source of life. We will reflect on this. Is it true or are we living a dream o protect ourselves?

L'Arche Renewal 1988

File consists of 57 audio cassettes featuring talks given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Jean Vanier, "Conflict"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to share more today about conflict and go deeper into conflict. Why did the passion of Jesus happen? This man was so good! Why was he totally rejected by everyone? What was the dynamics behind all of this? Why did Pilate do what he did? Peter? Judas? the Crowd? All of this is the conflict of conflicts. But can we discover that all of these dynamics are in me too?

Jean Vanier, "Protect Us from Pain / Unmasking the Illusion"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The cry comes from the pit, coming up from what is deepest in us--the pain of the child, the cry of anger, the cry of all oppressed people. Then the answer: God comes down. To be followers of Jesus, there is only one way--to go down. Going down into our own poverty. So the cry is the cry of every human being and its our cry too. And we have to learn to own it, which is difficult because in our world we are not allowed to cry, especially men. But if we can touch our weakness and cry, then we can begin to see where our salvation comes from.

L'Arche Renewal 1986

File consists of 33 audio cassettes featuring talks given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Jean Vanier, "A Message of Hope"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Being here has been a gift to us who have come from our various communities for the summer renewal program. My theme tonight is Hope. I will share with you some of my latest journeys. Maybe it will help you to know how privileged you are and what your responsibility is.
