Sound recordings of Retreats

The series consists of sound recordings of Faith and Sharing retreats throughout North America between 1971 and 1993. The majority of the recordings feature retreat talks given by Jean Vanier, but contributions made by other Faith and Sharing members appear throughout.

Jean Vanier, "Forgiveness / Peacemaking"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to share about forgiveness which is close to peace making, bringing people together from a reality of separation. I would call on you to reflect on how reconciliation and forgiveness can be lived in community. But today my focus will be on the personal reality of forgiveness.

Jean Vanier, "Looking at Our Fears ; Communion, the Basis of Our Life" - July 8, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I hope that during this renewal each of us will discover how beautiful we are and how much we are loved by God. We have a mission to discover our beauty. Many people don't believe they are loved by God. Children know they are loved but then what happens? We must also discover our brokenness, that the outer world is also our inner world. The challenge is to accept it rather than just be angry with it. So sometimes we can deny our beauty and sometimes our brokenness. The secret for humans is the transformation of brokenness into trust.

Jean Vanier, "Opening to the Pain and Chaos" - July 7, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: There is a 'plan' behind this renewal. These first few weeks is to open us up to all the pain in our world. It is there. We don't like it, we don't want it, we hate it, but it is there. Then through that to discover something about healing and compassion. Many people are overwhelmed by the reality of the pain in their lives today.

Jean Vanier, "The Journey Inward, the Journey Outward. Who is My Enemy?" - July 9, 1992

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 20, 1992, in England.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The inward and outward journeys are fundamentally the same. We have to do both. To meet poverty outside of one self and to refuse to see our inner poverty is not possible. It's a question of walking into our own pain and into the pain outside. It's important that we do this somehow together. As we begin to see the pain on the outside we begin to see our helplessness, our frustration, our angers and fears--our inner pain. Do we deny our inner pain and then the outer too? Or as we accept the inner pain, do we begin to understand the outer pain?

L'Arche Renewal 1992

File consists of 39 audio cassettes featuring talks given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 25 - August 18, 1992, in England.

Jean Vanier, "Shepherds, Servants of Communion" (part 3) - Friday, July 15, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Side Two starts with feedback from small group sharing. Then Jean speaks: How can we learn to comfort ourselves? We can always say that the fault is over there because there is no one comforting me. We have to discover how we comfort ourselves or how do we let the spirit of God comfort us. You have experiences of this when you had to call on your own resources. The answer somewhere is about prayer. Prayer is learning to comfort and shepherd ourselves or be shepherded by Jesus.

Jean Vanier, "Shepherds, Servants of Communion" (part 2) - Thursday, July 14, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We began this week on the theme of the poor as source of life. The poor who are crying out their pain and need. Are they just a pain in the neck and we have to get rid of them? This is the basic vision of a society based on a pyramid. They challenge us too much and our whole system of values. So we have been talking about the cry for communion of the poor, who call out our capacity for compassion. We will now keep on with how we are called to foster communion. If you are a shepherd, you must know what particular aspect of shepherding you are called to live.

Jean Vanier, "Shepherds, Servants of Communion" (part 1) - Thursday, July 14, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I just read a book by Br. Roger of Taize. One thing I loved was it said they changed the name of "Prior" of the community to the "Servant of Communion". It's a lovely name and we have to be really convinced that a leader of our communities is also the servant of communion. I want to talk about shepherding as being servants of communion. This is complex for us because very quickly we can become just administrators and not servants of communion. Thus we can be caught up mostly in organizing and doing rather than facilitating communion.

Jean Vanier, "Separation and Communion (B)" - Wednesday, July 13, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I would like to come back to we really don't know what communion is. But we have glimpses of it; we have a hope. We have much more an experience of collaboration and even more experience of separation. We you say to me prove communion is true, I can't. I have an intuition, a hope it is true. It's a hope of many people that it is possible. We are expressing a hope and a call that maybe communion is possible.

Jean Vanier, "Separation and Communion (A)" - Wednesday, July 13, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I feel that we are walking on a road together trying to discover something together. When we talk of the cry of the poor and their need and their pain, add on "of separation" because this morning we are going to talk about separation and communion. The poor cry their need, pain and separation and their cry for recognition, love and belonging. It's always a big question: who do you belong to? Who do we belong to? The question of belonging can be a painful one. The essential cry of the poor is the cry of their pain of separation.

Jean Vanier, "Passages" - Tuesday, July 12, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Are the poor a source of life or a source of death that should be got rid of? For people with handicaps we either push them into ghettos, kill them in the womb or else "normalize" them, which is a way of saying they are not different and don't need a special welcome. One f the big questions will be how to make the passage from being a source of death to a source of life? is it possible? If so, what is the conversion or passage necessary? This is not just an intellectual reality but a very personal one. It is not just a conversion to Jesus but also to Jesus in the poor. This is the final conversion.

Jean Vanier, "The Poor Source of Life" - Monday, July 11, 1988, A.M.

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk this morning about something a bit crazy about the poor as a source of life. Is it true or not? In a way we are touching the heart of L'Arche. Are we just living in a dream or is that dream real. Is it really possible that someone like Vincent at L'Etoille can be healing? Then it also comes down to the question: can my poverty be healing? If it's true the poor can be healing, then my poverty also can be a source of life. We will reflect on this. Is it true or are we living a dream o protect ourselves?

L'Arche Renewal 1988

File consists of 57 audio cassettes featuring talks given at l'Arche Renewal retreat events from June 22 - August 23, 1988.

Jean Vanier, "Conflict"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to share more today about conflict and go deeper into conflict. Why did the passion of Jesus happen? This man was so good! Why was he totally rejected by everyone? What was the dynamics behind all of this? Why did Pilate do what he did? Peter? Judas? the Crowd? All of this is the conflict of conflicts. But can we discover that all of these dynamics are in me too?

Jean Vanier, "Protect Us from Pain / Unmasking the Illusion"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Scotland in 1986.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The cry comes from the pit, coming up from what is deepest in us--the pain of the child, the cry of anger, the cry of all oppressed people. Then the answer: God comes down. To be followers of Jesus, there is only one way--to go down. Going down into our own poverty. So the cry is the cry of every human being and its our cry too. And we have to learn to own it, which is difficult because in our world we are not allowed to cry, especially men. But if we can touch our weakness and cry, then we can begin to see where our salvation comes from.

Jean Vanier, "A Message of Hope"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Being here has been a gift to us who have come from our various communities for the summer renewal program. My theme tonight is Hope. I will share with you some of my latest journeys. Maybe it will help you to know how privileged you are and what your responsibility is.

Jean Vanier, "3. Go"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It's really important to nourish ourselves with the words of Jesus. Today we need a theology and spirituality based on the Gospels. We can learn so much from the little things that Jesus did. His gestures and how he spoke. And how he reveals to us his gifts. Jesus wants us to be fulfilled through our gifts and our mission. He wants us to be instruments of love and grace to people. Now that he has physically left this world, the fundamental way he will reveal his message will be through us, our words, our eyes, our touch and our hearts,

Jean Vanier, "2. Stay"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: We continue with these three words of Jesus: "Come, Stay, & Go". If he calls us to him and touches us in our secret name, where we are so little and vulnerable, so yearning to be loved and yet afraid we are not loved. So we fill up that empty space with things and hyper activity, But if we let ourselves be touched and Jesus fills up that empty space of our hearts, if we hear the call and respond to the call, it's so we can "stay" and make our abode in him.

Jean Vanier, "1. Come"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It's good at the end of these 10 weeks that we recenter ourselves on Jesus. To look at him and ask "what do you want of me?" And to give to him all we have received over these 10 weeks and our worries about returning home, maybe we will be more humble than "renewed." Today, I would like to reflect on three words of Jesus: come, stay, go. These you find continually in the Gospel. There's the invitation to come, then the invitation to stay, rest and remain and finally "go and I will be with you."

Jean Vanier, "The Cry for Touch" #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: There was recently a Congress on new born children and it is terribly important what is being learned. The first home of every child is the womb. Then he has to leave because there is not enough space. But he still has a home in the arms of the mother; if not, he's lost. His very life depends on the relationship with his mother. But when held, he is at peace.

Jean Vanier, "The Cry for Touch" #1

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I began L'Arche in an unconscious way; perhaps you did too. Each of us has a story. But if you look back at why you came, it is very small to what we are discovering today, which is much bigger than we imagined and much more important.

Jean Vanier, "Reflections on Renewal"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Two possible things came up about what to share on for today. The first three weeks of the renewal were a very personal reality with Myers-Briggs, the journal workshop and then the retreat. This was an important time of hope for us all. Then we were hit with community and culture, starting with Nadine's talks. So maybe today we should focus on our communities, their hopes and pains.

Jean Vanier, "Intermediary" #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: If we push people to violence, there is a guilt afterwards. So if we can find other ways, more natural ways of dealing with tensions, it would be better. This demands we be creative in this domain, like play therapy and role play, etc.

Jean Vanier, "Intermediary" #1

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to start by coming back to the "hurt." We have all had the experience of being hurt. And it's obvious when you go into prisons or talk with an alcoholic. At one moment you touch the hurt. Each of us knows our own hurt. It can even be a little thing, but it was important to us. We all have that reality inside of us. A reality that was sacred to us, but that others didn't see it as sacred.

Jean Vanier, "Interlude" #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk about a few of the other subjects that came up at the Interlude. He had an atomic scientist who talked about the Big Bang, which produced millions of galaxies and stars. This is a mystery.

Jean Vanier, "Interlude" #1

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Tape starts with a song. I have been asked to talk about the Interlude in France. In a way I am going to idealize the situation. I like to bring up key words or themes. Words form our consciousness. It's important to hold onto certain words. Also it's important to be conscious of minorities. It's a question of culture; so it's important to listen to minorities.

Jean Vanier, "Sexuality" #3

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: Question and Answer Session

Jean Vanier, "Sexuality" #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: It's obvious to have fecundity, it's just not a question of placing the seed in the womb or in the earth. To be fecund is also the relationship between the man and woman and between them and the child. It is a long process. Everything in our lives is based on love. We go through a long process of relationship growing up. The backbone of our psychology is this love.

Jean Vanier, "Sexuality" #1

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to begin with the human heart. It is really important for us at L'Arche to realize that our point of departure is there. I will tell you why. Because when you are hurting, there are either of two situations in front of us. Either we can seek true healing through relationships or we can run away from the hurt into other realities like violence or depression.

Jean Vanier, "Sexuality - Affectivity" #2

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: For someone to make the passage from death to life, its warfare! Some people are so wounded and so convinced that they are no good, the person next to him has to be convinced that he is ok. There is a struggle between his despair and our hope. We have gone through this in all our homes.

Jean Vanier, "Sexuality - Affectivity" #1

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I think we can say we are becoming conscious of our mission. I began L'Arche in an unconscious way as perhaps you did too. Each of us has our story. But if you look back to the origins of why you came, it's small to what we are discovering today. Our mission is much bigger than we imagined and possibly more important than we imagined.

Jean Vanier, "Seeds of Hope"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a l'Arche Renewal retreat in Spokane, WA, in 1983.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: My theme is hope. If you will permit me I will share some of my recent journeys. Maybe it will help you to realize how privileged you are and what your responsibility is.

Jean Vanier, "Etaps de"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal event in Courchevel, France, in July 1980.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: French talk

Jean Vanier, "Authority and Structures"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: When we feel hopeless we often conceal it in different ways. We have to hide the fact that we are helpless. Also, when we receive aggression, that is a difficult thing. There again we often flee or get angry. Basically we can just hide in the office and become non available. Another reality is loneliness, which leads to the need to seek approval

Jean Vanier, "Important Stages to Growth"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to talk about the stages of growth, the bindings, the breakages and the refinding new centers. So first the stages of growth and then places of growth too.

Jean Vanier, "Celebrations"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I want to give a lot of practical ideas about celebration. I really believe that at the heart of our communities is something about celebration. This is something for us to look at and deepen. For me, I have the feeling that all of us get busy and preoccupied. I believe the link between busyness and centering has to do with celebration. I am going to try to show what the factors of celebration are.

Jean Vanier, "Our Journey to Wholeness"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I am touched by these words of Jesus: "Do you want to be whole? Do you want to be healed?" And then he says "rise up" with all your weaknesses and fragility. I want to look at why do we reject some people. The "normal" and the "marginal" is in each of us. When Jesus asks "Do you want to be whole?" that is our rebirth, being brought back together again.

Jean Vanier, "Evaluation after 3 weeks, Responsibility for Growth"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: What I would like to do is to say where I am at, at this time after our first three weeks. What I have picked up and what I have learnt. I will start at the beginning and share what I have lived and what worked well or not as well as we hoped.

Jean Vanier, "The Prophetic Cry of Marginal People"

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979. The title of the retreat was "Unless a Man Be Born Again."

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: I will share today about the "cry." Maybe we could say that "in the beginning was the cry." The cry is at the heart of change. I want to give some guidelines concerning marginal people as agents of change or as prophetic.

L’Arche Renewal 1979

File consists of 31 audio cassettes featuring talks given at a Renewal Retreat in 1979.

Jean Vanier, Conference #9

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The only thing that is important is that we meet Jesus and that we live the experience of covenant with him, which liberates, confirms us and helps us to understand the extraordinary tenderness of our God. During a retreat it's important to waste time with Jesus so that he can reveal himself to us in the silence. This afternoon I want to talk about another encounter in the gospel of John between Jesus and another woman, the one accused of adultery.

Jean Vanier, Conference #8

Item consists of 1 audio cassette featuring a talk given by Jean Vanier at an Assistants' Retreat in Erie, PA, in August 1984.

Content notes (or transcription) from beginning of the recording: The specific gift of Jesus to humanity is forgiveness. Forgiveness is essentially returning to the covenant, a recognition that we are made one for the other and called to give life to one another, that we belong to each other. We are there for Jesus and he is there for us. "Whatever you ask for in my name, the Father will give you". What do you ask? What is your yearning and what is your thirst? Is your asking coming from the depths of your being?
