B1969-0001: Updated documentary scrapbook on Dr. A.B. MacAllum, professor of biochemistry prepared by Dr. A. D. MacAllum. Consists of copies of articles, biographies, writings, photoprints relating to the life of Prof. A.B. MacAllum pasted into a scrapbook. (described in Series 2)

B2003-0022: Correspondence to A.B. Macallum who was professor of Physiology starting in 1901 and later professor of Biochemistry from 1908-1917. Some of the correspondence relates to his role in helping to organize the Meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at the University of Toronto in 1897. (described in Series 1)

Records document Milton Israel’s graduate studies at University of Michigan, and his publishing, teaching and research activities as Professor of South Asian Studies in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. The records relating to his graduate studies consist of research notes and some footnote drafts for his doctoral thesis “The Anglo-Indian in defense of authority, 1905-1910”.

A significant portion of the B2002-0009 accession documents his research and teaching activities relating to South Asian settlement and migration during the 1990s and includes course materials for HIST 394, a course he developed on this topic. In addition there is correspondence and reports relating to the Sikh Studies program in the Department for the Study of Religion developed at the time he was Director for the Centre for South Asian Studies.

The B2011-0004 accession contributes significantly to his research and teaching activities, including course materials and lecture notes for HIS 101, HUM 101, HIS 232, HIS 282, HIS 364 and HIS 394, relating to British colonialism, the history of India and particularly modern India, and South Asian civilization and migration. Also included are several popular lectures and seminars that Professor Israel gave over the course of his career.

Records documenting his publication activities in Series 4 focus on primarily three projects: his book In the future soil: a social history of the Indo-Canadians in Ontario (1994), his work on Encyclopedia of Canada’s Peoples (1999) while he was Chair of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario and “Safe Haven. The refugee experience of five families”, a book and exhibition produced in cooperation with the Royal Ontario Museum. Accession B2011-0004 also includes notes and correspondence regarding several published reviews and articles by Professor Israel, as well as reviews of these key publications.

An earlier accession (B1995-0052) is represented in Series 6, and includes correspondence, research material, notes and card files relating to, with drafts of, Milton Israel's book, "Communications and Power: propaganda and the press in the Indian Nationalist Struggle, 1920-1947" (1994).

Personal records of W. Harding le Riche, documenting his personal life in South Africa and Canada and his career as an epidemiologist, especially at the School of Hygiene and in the Department of Preventative Medicine at the University of Toronto.

The records include correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, memorabilia, and photographs; drafts of articles, chapters of books and whole books, including le Riche’s Memoirs; addresses; course outlines, lecture notes and other teaching files; conference files; and reports derived from academic research and consulting work. There is also a set of LPs consisting of a recording by the South African Broadcasting Corporation of a 1966 lecture series by Raymond Dart, an eminent anthropologist who first described Australopithecus africannus.

Fonds consists of the personal records of S. D. Clark, the first chair of Sociology at the University of Toronto, and selected personal records of his friend and colleague, Professor Oswald Hall, that Professor Clark had retained.

Consists of 6 accessions which include correspondence, notes, notebooks, sketchbooks, sketches, designs for stage sets, costume designs, photoprints and photonegatives, scrapbooks documenting the artistic lives of Frederick Coates and his wife, Louise Brown. The photographs include images of Frederick's family, his military service in World War I, dance, and his work in the reconstruction of the faces of maimed soldiers, his studio and their house, and models of buildings. Also includes Guest Book for "Sherwood House", with invitations to dramatic productions held therein; three letters between members of the Hoitt family (1867, 1885). Also included are water colours of costume designs, 5 Art Deco works of art, consisting of Coates' three stage sets for 'Danse Fronds' (ca. 1929), 'Fashions' (ca. 1928), and 'The Storm Centre' (1927); a theatre design featuring a clown; and a still life entitled 'The Blue Plate' (1922). Artifacts include medals, printing blocks, pottery, 20 modelling tools and a sculpture documenting their careers and artistic work.

This fonds consists of the personal records of Karl Ferdinand Maria Helleiner, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Toronto (1942-1973), consisting of publications and manuscripts, addresses, research and lecture notes, examinations, and correspondence. The records are organized in 7 series documenting his career as city archivist of St. Pölten, Austria (1927-1938) and as a professor for over thirty years in the Department of Political Economy at the U of T, where he specialized in European economic history. Many of the records relate to his activities as a historian researching and writing various lectures and addresses, his major books "The Imperial Loans: A Study in Financial and Diplomatic History" and "Free Trade and Frustration: Anglo-Austrian Negotiations 1860-70", as well as the numerous articles and book reviews he published in peer-reviewed journals over the span of his career.

Records of the Fraser family, principally William Henry Fraser, Professor of Italian and Spanish, and his wife, Helene and two of their children, Donald Thomas and Frieda Helen, both professors in the School of Hygiene. Fonds also contains the records of Frieda Fraser's lifetime companion, Edith (Bud) Bickerton Williams, a veterinarian, including extensive correspondence between Frieda and Bud that documents their personal lives as a same-sex couple, as well as their professional lives as women in medicine in the early 20th century. The correspondence has been noted for its significance both in terms of both Canadian lesbian history and the history of medicine. [1]
Also included are course and laboratory notes, lecture notes, research files and notebooks, addresses, drafts of articles, prize books, photographs and slides, sketches and watercolours, the Zahn Family Chronicle and other family history items.

These personal records consist mainly of records documenting Clara Benson’s non-professional activities such as work with the Women’s Athletic Association of the University of Toronto, the YWCA and her relationship with family members and friends. The personal correspondence in Series 2 provides the most detailed information about her relationship with family, friends and activities. Letters from her parents and siblings provide an insight into her activities and progress at the University of Toronto during her undergraduate years. A few letters, however, will be found from colleagues at the university such as Prof. A.B. Macallum, Prof. Annie Laird and others.

Unfortunately documentation relating to her academic activities is limited to some correspondence and notes found in Series 5 relating to her efforts from 1920s onwards to have the Women’s Athletic Building built. Her early education in Port Hope is documented in the school books, essays and other records in Series 4. Series 4 also contains her framed diplomas for B.A. and Ph.D. No manuscripts of her publications, including her Ph D. thesis appear to have survived. The lecture notes in Series 7 do provide some indication of the content of her courses in food chemistry, and were probably used repeatedly, year after year.

Dr. Benson also recorded her travel and sightseeing activities both abroad and in Canada on film. Series 10 contains 50 rolls of 16mm film documenting her trips to Egypt (1926), England (1937 and late 1940’s and early 1950’s), South America (1939) and the United States (1939, 1948). Some of her leisure time, both while at the University of Toronto and after her retirement, was spent filming events and scenery in Toronto in general, and the University in particular, as well as her family at home in Port Hope.

Fonds consists of correspondence, subject files, articles, teaching files, research notes and other records documenting the professional life and work of Prof. Richard Simeon. This includes records relating to Prof. Simeon’s PhD thesis and early career, teaching, departmental and curriculum planning at Queen’s University and the University of Toronto, peer reviews, conference attendance, articles and books, and evaluations of student performance.

The fonds also includes significant coverage of Prof. Simeon’s research projects and advisory work, including work for the Forum of Federations, as the research coordinator for the Macdonald Report on Canada’s future, as adviser to Ontario Premiers, and as participant in the Renewal of Canada conferences. Research files cover issues of ethnicity and democratic governance, Canada-U.S. relations, and bilingualism in voluntary associations. Records also document Prof. Simeon’s work relating to constitutional development in post-apartheid South Africa.

Fonds also contains a significant number of electronic files, some transferred directly from Prof. Simeon’s computer, and some on disks. These files relate the range of activities documented throughout the paper records. Files from his computer have been organized into the same 9 series as the paper files. Disks have been kept in their own series (Series 10).

Schedules, programmes, and press clippings relating to Fox's activities as a player in Junior B & Senior Hockey at the University of Toronto. Includes a photo depicting the University of Toronto Senior Hockey Team during practice session in academic year 1949/1950.

Consists of 134 slides depicting the University of Toronto campus in the early 1980s. These images were taken by photographer Rudi Christl for use in "University of Toronto: A Souvenir" published by Oxford press in 1984. It also includes images that were taken for the book and not used as well as a series of images of Osgoode Hall.

There are general campus views as well as exterior and interior shots of campus buildings including: University College, Victoria College, Trinity College, St. Michael's College, New College, Wycliff College, Innis College as well as Scarborough and Erindale Colleges; other buildings include Sir Daniel Wilson residence, Flavelle House, Hart House, Sidney Smith Hall, the Athletic Centre, Newman Centre, Botany Greenhouses, Cumberland House, Sandford Fleming, McLennan Laboratories; libraries include: Robarts, Sigmund Samuel and Science and Medicine. This accession also includes several slides of Osgood Hall.

Slides also capture events on campus. For example, there are shots of homecoming floats and parade, student registration, student in study halls, convocation procession, engineering student march, skating and football on the back campus and student theatrical performances - to list only a few.

Correspondence, notes, memoranda, reports, manuscripts, articles, brochures, reviews, photoprints and maps documenting the production of the Economic Atlas of Ontario which appeared in 1969. The project was directed by Professor William Dean of the Department of Geography.

The production of the Economic Atlas of Ontario was undertaken by the Department of Geography at the University of Toronto by a group of staff and graduate students headed by Professor William Dean. The principal financial sponsors were the Ontario Department of Economics and Development and the University of Toronto through the "Varsity Fund".

Its purpose was to provide new insights into the complexity of economic activities in Ontario and their relationship to the physical and behavioural environments. When the Atlas appeared in 1969, it was immediately recognized as a superlative example of its genre, both for the information it provided and for its design. In 1970 it won the world's highest international design award, the gold medal at the International Book Fair in Leipzig. In 1973 it received the Wallace W. Atwood Prize for "the work which is of greatest significance and which has made the greatest contribution to the field of geography in the continent".

This surgical fellowship was established in 1954 by surgeons who were residents under the tenure of Robert Meredith Janes, Chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1947-1957. Fonds documents research undertaken by Gwynneth Heaton in 1993 and 1994 to investigate the provision of reference services in medical school libraries. The investigation examined factors that may affect reference service such sa the proximity of other desks providing information; the type of staff providing the service; the variety of services provided; the provision of research assistance by appointment; the physical proximity of a hospital; and the use of problem based learning in the medical school curriculum. The project involved a mail survey and follow up visits to selected medical libraries in Canada and the United States. The results of this research were published in various academic library journals.

The accession consists of correspondence, questionnaires, raw survey data, research notes and manuscripts of published and unpublished articles resulting from Ms. Heaton's research project.

Fonds consists of letters (1929-1962) that Gertrude Knighton's mother, Elizabeth (Lili) Louisa Boeschenstein, wrote to her mother, Emma Schoch-Walter, and her older sister, Emmeli Schoch; Lili Schoch's exercise books that she compiled to teach children [191-]; letters to her and Hermann Boeschenstein from their families in Switzerland, 1928- ca. 1947; correspondende between Hermann and Lili (1930-1955) and with their children, principally Frank and Gertrude (1944-1963). Evans, president of the University of Toronto (1972-1978), consisting of correspondence, addresses, memoranda, minutes of meetings, reports, and photographs relating to his activities (primarily after he stepped down as president of the University of Toronto) as chair, member of boards of directors, or adviser to government and private agencies in health, educational and informational fields, including the government of Ontario, Allelix Pharmaceuticals, Canadian Foundation for Innovation, McMaster University, Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, Medical and Related Science Research District (MaRS), the World Bank/Rockefeller Orphan Drug and Vaccine Project, the Pew Global Stewardship Initiative, and governance generally. Also includes accounts of trips to China and Japan, and files on several conferences.

Records assembled by David Grenville relating to two projects on Omond McKillop Solandt: a proposed biography of him (never completed) and a symposium in his honour (1994) that was published as Perspectives in science and technology: the legacy of Omond Solandt. The files for the biography include original documents, research notes, correspondence, notes, manuscripts and addresses by Solandt (1957-1980) and 66 audio cassette tapes (with tape summaries by Jason Ridler) of interviews Grenville did with Solandt and his colleagues. Slides of Philosopher's Walk which Bill Hicks took for a student project while he was a student in the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

This accession contains both personal and professional records created and collected by Dr. L.E. Jones, professor of engineering. Although a small percentage of this fonds documents his personal life, the vast majority of material was created after his retirement in 1972, which he created in his capacity as Faculty Archivist and Professor Emeritus. The paucity of information from the earlier years can be attributed to the loss of many of his records during the Sir Sandford Fleming building fire in 1977.

The records have been arranged into series to reflect either the type of record or the activity involved. Records documenting Jones’ personal life are filed first, followed by papers documenting both the personal, professional and academic projects and activities that he worked on during his life. There are also special series dedicated to the archival information and records that he collected as Engineering Archivist. Photographs have been placed at the end in Series XI.

Some of the records that are included in this fonds include Professor Jones personal documents such as: his student workbooks and thesis, his letters to the editor, correspondence, and activities with his church and the Hart House Glee Club. Most of the records pertain to his professional activities and consist of documents such as: correspondence, publications, lectures and student marks. There are also a significant number of files that document his involvement in Faculty activities such as the Iron Ring Ceremony, the Hall of Distinction and the Centennial and Sesquicentennial celebrations. The work that he undertook for the Faculty providing calligraphy for the inscriptions on the awards and medals that were granted by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering are also documented in many of the files. Finally, two series are dedicated to the articles that he collected documenting the history of the Faculty as well as the archival items that he acquired as Engineering Archivist.

Despite the fact that most of the records in this fonds document Professor Jones’ personal and professional activities after his retirement, they provide an interesting glimpse into his life while assuming the role of Engineering Archivist and Professor Emeritus. As the Engineering Archivist, Jones collected a variety of rich and interesting documents pertaining to some of the early pioneers within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. In addition to collecting material, Jones also documented the Faculty by photographing notable individuals and events. This fonds would therefore be useful to those individuals interested in examining the life of Professor Jones, as well as researchers who wish to delve into the history of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.

Records acquired in 2019 include drafts and notes related to the writing of his PhD thesis titled, “The undular surge in an open channel” (1941); early lecture notes and files relating to his teaching, in particular photography; further professional correspondence and memos related to his role as Engineering Archivist; additional items he collected as Engineering Archivist, in particular belonging to and/or about Prof. Louis B. Stewart and Prof. J.W. Melson; collected ephemera, artifacts, and photos about the University and the Faculty of Engineering.

B1979-0006: Diaries, mementos, photograph of A.D.LePan, superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at the University of Toronto from 1919 to 1956 (7 boxes).

B1980-0032: Certificate presented to Arthur D'Orr LePan, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, University of Toronto, at a dinner held in his honour in the Great Hall of Hart House on 2 February 1931, with signatures of the attendees and a copy of the menu, all mounted in a mahogany case. The certificate was designed by J. E. H. Macdonald and measures 53 cm x 35 cm. The dimensions of the case are 70 cm. x 49 cm.

Fonds consists of extensive records documenting the life and career of Thomas Howarth, relating primarily to his activities as an architecture student at the University of Manchester, and as a professor and administrator there and at the Universities of Glasgow and Toronto, as a professional architect, and as an authority on Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Fonds consists of 4 accessions of records documenting Professor Drummond's academic career, from his years as a doctoral student at Yale to his final years as professor of economics at the University of Toronto. Personal and professional correspondence, manuscripts of both published and unpublished works including books, articles, papers and presentations, research materials and teaching materials document his contribution to the study of economic history relating to Canada and other commonwealth countries as well as Europe. Also includes some records relating to his administrative activities at the University of Toronto, which will be found in Series 5, 15, 16 and in correspondence contained in Series 2 and 3 of accessions B1995-0013 & B1996-0026.

Personal records documenting the careers of Alexander Peter Cockburn and his children, Jean Elizabeth Munro, Harriet Macmillan Cockburn, James Roy Cockburn, Cecilia Catherine Cockburn, and Mary Barnfield. The records include diaries, certificates, legal documents, course notes and term papers, lecture notes, notes, medical case books, addresses, publications, blueprints, design drawings, photographs, lantern slides, sketches, trench and other military maps (First World War), press clippings and medals. The most extensive series record the activities of Alexander Peter Cockburn as president of the Muskoka and Nipissing Navigation Company; Harriet Cockburn as a medical doctor, especially relating to her service in Serbia during the First World War; Jean Munro's career as an artist in France; and Roy Cockburn's career as professor of engineering drawing in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, and his military service in the First World War with the Royal Engineers in France and with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force under General Allenby in Palestine.
