2016 accrual

The Ian Thornley 2016 accession includes many unique textual records. Present in the collection are record agreements, press clippings, and many notes relating to his and Big Wreck’s many tours. There are also invoices and news reports. Many raw, rough mixes, and unmastered audio recordings of Big Wreck’s music is present as are recordings from Thornley himself. Moving image elements are present, capturing live performances and interviews of the band and Thornley. There is also a significant amount of photography documenting Thornley during his career.

Thornley, Ian

University of Toronto Blues men's baseball team

This series documents Professor Lang’s years of service to the University of Toronto Blues Men’s Baseball team which he coached from 1994 to 2011. The files contain information on team lists, coaches, financing and fundraising, equipment, rosters and players, and statistical records. There is also some press coverage. There is documentation of tournaments in Columbus, Ohio (1998) and Durham College in Oshawa (1999). Photographs and digital images document the team from 1999-2007, including many images and graphics used to boost the website for the team Also included is an Ontario University Athletics medal for 2001.

Digital files in B2018-0001 include email correspondence with players, university officials, and sponsors; rosters and team photographs; and files related to the construction of a new baseball diamond on the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, which opened in 2006. In 2011, it was renamed the “Dan Lang field” in honour of his many years of service to the Varsity Blues baseball program.

COMISS award

File consists of the COMISS Award medal Nouwen received from the Council on Ministry in Specialized Settings for his outstanding contribution to the field of pastoral care, counseling and education.

Wooden Ukrainian cross

File consists of a wooden Ukrainian cross with a dedication on the back that says "For Lorenzo From Henri Aug 1994."

Ceramic chalice

Item consists of one ceramic chalice with an orange glaze paint.

Clay bird ornament

Item consists of one small clay bird. The top of the bird is painted blue.

Wooden nativity set

Item consists of one nativity set. There are fourteen pieces depicting the Wise Men, Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and some animals. These pieces are made of wood and are painted.

Ceramic ornament of St. Francis of Assisi and wolf

Item consists of a painted sculpture of St. Francis of Assisi with a wolf. He is wearing the brown garb of a Franciscan monk. He has his arms around the wolf, and the wolf is looking up at him. The bottom of the sculpture is covered in green felt and features a sticker with the letters "LBI".

Blue box

Item consists of one blue plastic case for holding papers. Nouwen used this case for his L'Arche Journal, kept from 1985 to 1986.

Two briefcases

File consists of two suitcases, one brown (E118) and one black (E119) with a combination lock, owned by Nouwen in the course of his life.

Place mat

Item consists of one turquoise woven place mat.

Plaster sculpture

Item consists of one glazed plaster sculpture of a hand with "Michael Barret 1991" carved on bottom. Sculpture is glazed with white paint with blue and purple swatches.

Wooden acrobat toy

Item consists of one painted wooden acrobat toy on a wooden stand given to Nouwen by Joseph and Brad for Christmas. There is a handwritten note from Joseph and Brad on the wooden stand.

Wooden sculpture

Item consists of one wooden sculpture, all carved from one block of dark wood. The bottom of the wood features the carved inscription 'The Remnant' and possibly a signature of the artist. The sculpture features a seated figure with its legs pulled to its chest, and one arm wrapped around the body. The other arm is resting on the floor, with its palm facing upward and cupped. The figure is sanded smooth with a finish, while the base is left rough.

Stoles

File consists of one variegated magenta wool stole with large tassels, one multi-coloured stole made from woven cotton possibly made in Central or South America, and one blended red woolen stole.

Two icons

File consists of two icons. Icons are:
E138: Possibly from the Ukraine or Russia, in a plastic silver frame. Print of a saint holding a large wooden cross and wearing purple and red robes, as well as a crown. Text next to the figure is in Russian.
E139: Print of "the Savior of Zvenigorod" affixed to wooden base. This print is likely a copy of a fresco or painting, as parts of the artwork are missing.

Glass chalices and paten

File consists of two clear glass chalices, and one clear glass paten. One of the chalices is slightly larger than the other. These chalices were used by Nouwen while he was a priest at L'Arche Daybreak. The cups were made by a glassblower in Vermont, Simon Pearce. Nouwen liked the clear glass because the wine could be seen, and many people could drink from them. He wrote, in Can You Drink the Cup, "These glass cups speak about a new way of being a priest and a new way of being human."

Ronald McDonald House Charities Award of Excellence

File consists of the Ronald McDonald House Charities Award of Excellence awarded to Nouwen in September 1996 and received by Carl MacMillan and others from the L'Arche Daybreak in October on behalf of Nouwen, who had died within that time, including a Ronald McDonald House Charities commemorative bottle of Coca-Cola, dated October 12, 1996.

Silver napkin ring

Item consists of one silver napkin ring, featuring the inscription "Francis George Sutton".

Modified mother-of-pearl rosary

Item consists of one modified rosary with 11 mother-of-pearl beads and has a silver clasp attached to one end, a silver cross at the other.

Brass plate of Saint Gennaro

Item consists of one small brass plate with the image of Saint Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, and the inscription "prega per noi," the Italian phrase for "pray for us".

Black Orthodox rosary

Item consists of one black Orthodox rosary. The Rosary is made of knotted wool to simulate beads, with light blue thread wrapped around segments for decoration. The end of the rosary is a cross shape in the wool.

Coasters

Item consists of one set of coasters. The initials "H.N." are embossed on the coasters in gold ink.

Noah's Ark musical ornament

Item consists of one Noah's Ark musical ornament with "Adam Arnett, Nov. 17-1961 - Feb. 13-1996" inscribed on bottom. The song played is "It's a Small World".

Painted angel ornament

Item consists of one painted wooden angel. It has many colours. The angel is blowing a horn. Label on the back indicates that the angel was purchased in El Salvador for $15.99.

Virgin Mary statuette

Item consists of one cream-coloured, porcelain statuette featuring the figure of the Virgin Mary praying. Statuette is approximately 19.5 cm tall. This object was a gift to Nouwen from the Flying Rodleighs. Bottom of the figure has inscription, in pen, "To: Henri. With love from the Flying Rodleighs."

Clay sculpture

Item consists of one small clay sculpture, possibly made by a member of L'Arche Daybreak. The sculpture features Nouwen with his arms around a child, whose hand is reaching towards Nouwen's open mouth. The Nouwen figure has a blue-gray glaze paint for clothing, and has glasses carved on his face.

2015 acquisition

The collection covers all points of the band’s career, from the early years, and then a large emphasis with material from the early to mid 2000s. All aspects of the workings of the band are present, from raw footage captured for music video creation, master mixes for their albums, and touring information.

The acquisition includes recorded footage for their music video “Young Lions” and other videos, digital files with lyrics, various artifacts including promotional patches, 2010 Independent Music Award, commercial CDs and DVDs of their work, audio master reels of select albums, various newspaper clippings regarding the band, and many textual records on tour information and expenses, royalty statements, photographs and print material for promotional use, financial statements, some personal records, and a large collection of posters.
