These records document the academic career of Professor Laurel Sefton MacDowell, a labour and environmental historian and professor at the University of Toronto. The records consist of personal and biographical information (including MacDowell's time as an undergraduate and graduate student at the U of T), her lecture notes and syllabi for courses taught at U of T, York, and McMaster, her publications and research, her professional activities (both inside and outside academia), and general correspondence.
Sefton MacDowell, Laurel
The fonds consists of the personal papers of Gilbert Edward Jackson, a former professor of economics at the University of Toronto. Compiled from inventories of three accessions, the fonds documents Mr. Jackson’s career, participation and achievements as an economist, consultant and professor in Canada and England, during the early 1920s to late 1950s, with the greatest emphasis being on the mid 1930s to early 1950s. Arranged chronologically by function, the fond is divided into ten series. They include: Personal material, related to various activities, accomplishments and events that occurred in Mr. Jackson’s private life; Teaching activities; Manuscripts written by Mr. Jackson; the Canadian Tariff Board; the National War Labour Board; the National Selective Service Advisory Board; Other Federal Government research and reports; the Bank of England; his consulting firm, Gilbert Jackson & Associates; and Photographs.
Within the fonds, a cross over among these series exists as the research Mr. Jackson completed for himself was also utilized for assignments produced for other consulting economists and firms. For instance, the research that was completed to write submissions to the Canadian Tariff Board (Series 4) was also utilized to publish articles located in Series 3 (Manuscripts) and Series 9 (Gilbert Jackson & Associates). Related topics can also be found in Series 5 (National War Labour Board) through Series 7 (Other Federal Government research and reports, as they document the extensiveness of Mr. Jackson’s involvement and research completed for the Federal Government of Canada between the late 1920s to 1950s. Although the material within the series are for different Boards, this cross over among the series documents Mr. Jackson’s involvement and active role within the world of Canadian economics during the mid twentieth century.
Although Mr. Jackson taught at the University of Toronto for roughly 15 years, only a small amount of records exist in the fonds that document his teaching career. The records that do exist in Series 2, (Teaching activities) provide a brief overview of the themes covered and issues addressed during his lectures delivered in the 1950’s. However, additional documents related to Mr. Jackson’s academic career at the University of Toronto can be found in Series 3 (Manuscripts), the correspondence in Series 8 (Bank of England), and Series 9 (Gilbert Jackson & Associates) as the records within the files highlight his relationships, activities, teaching and mentoring of graduate students who attended the University of Toronto.
This fonds will be of great interest to researchers studying the financial condition of Canada and England during the Great Depression and First and Second World Wars. An individual who sharpened the minds of the youth at the time, Gilbert Jackson’s fonds documents the ideologies that shaped the economic world of today, as “it has been said that half the leading economists in Canada today studied under him”

The papers of James Arnold Dauphinee are a particularly fine representation of their type. Highly intelligent and inventive, Dr. Dauphinee had an international reputation in his field, pathological chemistry. He maintained a broad range of other interest, from music to philately, and was known to play the occasional game of golf. He was something of a packrat but, fortunately, also a meticulous record keeper. His papers are of value to the reader from a number of perspectives. A history of the Department of Pathological Chemistry could not be written without reference to them. Dr. Dauphinee's files cover the years 1934-1972 and he also preserved some of the papers of his predecessor as head, Andrew Hunter. The Department is not well represented elsewhere in the holdings in the University Archives.
Dr. Dauphinee was very interested in new developments in research. After his return from military service during World War II, he became deeply involved in the study of the effects of radiation on the human body. His papers are a rich resource for this pioneering work, as they are for the work he began as a medical student on arginase and the functioning of the liver and carried on throughout the rest of his life. Dr. Dauphinee wrote numerous scientific papers, many of which were published. Some very interesting ones exist in draft form only, but contain his evolving ideas on problems being studied. He also believed in the wider dissemination of information, and was much in demand as a speaker. His papers contain many of his addresses and document his enthusiastic support of organizations such as the Royal Canadian. Institute.
He was also keenly interested in professional development and the maintenance of high standards in his discipline. He belonged to a large number of professional associations and devoted much energy to some of them, including the I College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The qualities evident here and in his research were also reflected in his relationship with his patients. His concern for their well-being is evident in his extensive patient files and in the records he kept while on active service during World War II.

Personal records of the Davidson Black family, covering three generations, with particular reference to Davidson Black, the discoverer of Peking Man. Included are his diaries, extensive family correspondence and a few professional letters; files on his education, his employment, including his service in World War I but especially at Peking Union Medical College, his life in China generally, along with a few on his writings, and some artifacts. There is an extensive and well documented photo collection that helps tie the whole together. There are also a number of films made by Davidson Black between the late 1920s and 1932.

Personal records of Francess Halpenny, documenting her activities as a student, with the RCAF during World War II, with amateur theatre groups, as a professor of library science, as an editor with the U of T Press and the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, and with numerous academic and professional groups, including the Royal Society of Canada, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the National Library. Included are some drafts of her books, articles, addresses, and reports; her honorary degrees and other awards (including photos and a video), other photos, and a (RSC) medal.
Halpenny, Francess Georgina
When Dr. Solandt started donating his personal records to the University of Toronto Archives in 1988, beginning with his certificates and diplomas, the richness, diversity, and volume of the material still to come was only hinted at. Over the next five years further donations were made, punctuated by telephone conversations about the need for still more boxes and folders and archival methods of arrangement and description. Dr. Solandt was very interested in our professional approach to managing his records and was determined (as always, I was to discover) to do things in the proper manner. Twenty years after his death his widow, Vaire, donated the last of his personal records; they had been partially arranged by Dr. Solandt and stored above the garage at the Wolfe Den.
Dr. Solandt’s running commentary on his past life, as the boxes piled up for transfer to the Archives, proved of considerable assistance. I faced a huge volume of records documenting wide-ranging, complex, and often inter-related events, which he had divided into categories roughly equivalent to his numerous activities. These were to form the basis of most of the forty-six series in this inventory. In addition, beginning several years before, he had undertaken to do what few individuals have ever had the time or the inclination to attempt – an overview of each principal activity. There are more than twenty of these, totalling several hundred pages. Each demonstrates the clarity of thought and an understanding of the essentials of any problem facing him that characterized his work and enabled him often to juggle several divergent projects at once. They proved invaluable as I sought to make sense of the mountain of material in front of me, and should be equally useful to researchers.
The records, dating from 1915 to 1994, encompass most of the media one might expect to find in an archives, the bulk being textual records, graphic material (primarily photographs and slides), maps and plans, and publications. The material pertaining to his personal life consists primarily of biographical files (including press coverage), correspondence and diaries, files on his travels and, especially, on his canoe trips as part of the “Voyageurs” group.
Most of the records, not surprisingly, document his extraordinarily active and productive professional life, from the beginning of World War II to the end of the 1980s. The earlier portions of his career, especially his years with the Defence Research Board, Canadian National Railways, de Havilland, and the Electric Reduction Company are not well represented here as the records are largely found elsewhere. The volume of records begin to pick up in the mid-1960s and the greatest strength is to be found in those generated from the early 1970s on, when Dr. Solandt’s activities became complex indeed, with directorships in many companies, many consultancies, trusteeships and advisory committees. Three activities which seemed to please him most were ...the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories [1976-1982]..consultancies for international agricultural and medical research [1975-1988]...and Senior Consultant to the Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Toronto, enabling him to retain a close association with the University.
This finding aid for this fonds is arranged by series, with the accessions clearly designated. In the series that are grouped by activity, the arrangement, once career changes are identified, is largely chronological. The principal concentration of activity in any project is the determining factor in the order. Organizations that predominate in one series may be represented in another, particularly those dealing with international agricultural and medical research, such as the umbrella Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. Most accessions have more than one series.
Dr. Solandt’s abiding interest in scientific research and development is a recurring theme throughout and was instrumental, for instance, to his agreeing to chair the newly established Science Council of Canada (1966) and in joining the IMASCO/CDC Research Foundation (1978). Similarly, it was his acknowledged excellence as a manager that, in later years, brought him into contact with the international research agencies that needed professional advice on internal structural problems. On another level, the canoe trips he began at the age of 41 nurtured an interest in wilderness conservation and, subsequently, involvement with the Quetico Foundation and the Wilderness Research Foundation. One factor linking all these activities was Dr. Solandt’s inter-disciplinary approach to ideas and problem solving; it is a recurring theme in his correspondence and in his introductions to the series.

The fonds consists of records kept by Stephen Reynolds during the course of his adult life. These include correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues that illuminate his personal life, his Christian faith, and his various pastoral and intellectual pursuits. Carbon copies of many outgoing letters were created and kept. Reynolds kept an intermittent diary through the time period represented here. These were sometimes typed, and often handwritten in small notebooks. He apparently removed pages from these notebooks and inserted them in files with correspondence and other material from the same time period.
Other records include academic papers, research material, sermons, prayers, drafts of manuscripts, course materials, and some official documents such as academic transcripts.

Fonds comprises handwritten and carbon copies of the manuscripts for two books: “A Study in the Idea of God” and “Civilization in the Making.” As well, there is a Sign-List for Pre-Hammurabi Contract Tablets. There are some 100 lantern slides that Mercer was famous for using in his lectures. Some of these slides by photographer A.J. Reading show titles for the images; however there is no listing of them.

The fonds includes manuscripts of Collier's arrangements and original compositions; correspondence with musicians; photographs; lecture notes from his career at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario; and records from his collaborations with Duke Ellington. Fonds also contains audio and video recordings of performances and lectures.
Collection contains photographs, programs, and press notices of his performances; manuscripts of songs written for him by composers including Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Lalo and Pizzetti; five collections of published songs; a scrapbook of programs from his first year as manager of the Metropolitan Opera.

Correspondence, notes, memoranda, reports, manuscripts, articles, brochures, reviews, photoprints and maps documenting the production of the Economic Atlas of Ontario which appeared in 1969. The project was directed by Professor William Dean of the Department of Geography.
The production of the Economic Atlas of Ontario was undertaken by the Department of Geography at the University of Toronto by a group of staff and graduate students headed by Professor William Dean. The principal financial sponsors were the Ontario Department of Economics and Development and the University of Toronto through the "Varsity Fund".
Its purpose was to provide new insights into the complexity of economic activities in Ontario and their relationship to the physical and behavioural environments. When the Atlas appeared in 1969, it was immediately recognized as a superlative example of its genre, both for the information it provided and for its design. In 1970 it won the world's highest international design award, the gold medal at the International Book Fair in Leipzig. In 1973 it received the Wallace W. Atwood Prize for "the work which is of greatest significance and which has made the greatest contribution to the field of geography in the continent".

These personal records consist mainly of records documenting Clara Benson’s non-professional activities such as work with the Women’s Athletic Association of the University of Toronto, the YWCA and her relationship with family members and friends. The personal correspondence in Series 2 provides the most detailed information about her relationship with family, friends and activities. Letters from her parents and siblings provide an insight into her activities and progress at the University of Toronto during her undergraduate years. A few letters, however, will be found from colleagues at the university such as Prof. A.B. Macallum, Prof. Annie Laird and others.
Unfortunately documentation relating to her academic activities is limited to some correspondence and notes found in Series 5 relating to her efforts from 1920s onwards to have the Women’s Athletic Building built. Her early education in Port Hope is documented in the school books, essays and other records in Series 4. Series 4 also contains her framed diplomas for B.A. and Ph.D. No manuscripts of her publications, including her Ph D. thesis appear to have survived. The lecture notes in Series 7 do provide some indication of the content of her courses in food chemistry, and were probably used repeatedly, year after year.
Dr. Benson also recorded her travel and sightseeing activities both abroad and in Canada on film. Series 10 contains 50 rolls of 16mm film documenting her trips to Egypt (1926), England (1937 and late 1940’s and early 1950’s), South America (1939) and the United States (1939, 1948). Some of her leisure time, both while at the University of Toronto and after her retirement, was spent filming events and scenery in Toronto in general, and the University in particular, as well as her family at home in Port Hope.

Consists of 134 slides depicting the University of Toronto campus in the early 1980s. These images were taken by photographer Rudi Christl for use in "University of Toronto: A Souvenir" published by Oxford press in 1984. It also includes images that were taken for the book and not used as well as a series of images of Osgoode Hall.
There are general campus views as well as exterior and interior shots of campus buildings including: University College, Victoria College, Trinity College, St. Michael's College, New College, Wycliff College, Innis College as well as Scarborough and Erindale Colleges; other buildings include Sir Daniel Wilson residence, Flavelle House, Hart House, Sidney Smith Hall, the Athletic Centre, Newman Centre, Botany Greenhouses, Cumberland House, Sandford Fleming, McLennan Laboratories; libraries include: Robarts, Sigmund Samuel and Science and Medicine. This accession also includes several slides of Osgood Hall.
Slides also capture events on campus. For example, there are shots of homecoming floats and parade, student registration, student in study halls, convocation procession, engineering student march, skating and football on the back campus and student theatrical performances - to list only a few.
This fonds consists of 5 series, divided by format. These are: Textual Material, Photographic Material, Audio Material, Video Material, and Artifacts.
The first series, Textual Materials, includes material relating to CRTC applications, specialty services, CHUM, CityTV and other organizations. The bulk of the material pertains to programming on City, MuchMusic and CHUM, though personal correspondence, journals, and administrative documents are also included.
The second series, Photographic Material, includes personal and professional material. Of particular note is a series of black and white prints from the early days of CityTV in the 1970s.
The third series, Audio Material, consists of hearings from 1970s CRTC hearings, as well as MuchMusic’s commercial compilations and original performances by Canadian and international artists.
The fourth series, Video Material, consists of informally filmed one-of-a-kind events at CityTV and MuchMusic, as well as more personal events (Switzer’s wedding, reunion shows, etc.). Also included are DVDs of CHUM international projects featuring videos by performers from around the world.
The fifth series, Artifacts, consists of a number of items used for publicity, including t-shirts, toys, a snowglobe, pins, and lunchboxes.

The collection includes correspondence both private and public, diaries, natural history notebooks, a few sketches, and scrapbooks. Much of the material pre-dates Fothergill's arrival in Upper Canada in 1816. Some of the family correspondence continues for over 30 years after his death in 1840.
The collection consists of material relating to Canadian theatre history and to Gardner's acting and directing career. It includes theatre programmes, articles and press clippings concerning the history of theatre in Canada, especially for the Toronto area (1974 to 1999); audio tapes of Association for Canadian Theatre Research conferences; videotapes of ten television productions directed by him, and more than fifty production photographs; tapes of his television and film performances; scrapbooks (1935-1955), that document his career on stage (Hart House Theatre, Straw Hat Players, Crest Theatre, New Play Society, Jupiter Theatre, Stratford Festival) and in radio and television; other papers and photographs; other directors' prompt books; diaries; correspondence; playbills and broadsides. John Holden's collection of 19th and 20th century playscripts as well as Holden's production scripts for Canadian theatres, mainly in the 1950s and early 1960s, are also in the collection.

A1981-0061: Contains files of the Director (Donald MacRae) relating to the events celebrating the 500th anniversary of the birth of Copernicus including the visit of Dr. Wilhelmina Iwanowska of the Nicholaus Copernicus Observatory, University of Torum Polond.
A1982-0004: Contains files of the Director relating to activities on two committees of the National Research Council: Algonquin Radio Observatory Long Range Planning Committee (1968) and Dr. Currie's Committee "Astronomy and the Universities (1966). Also correspondence with the Faculty of Arts Dean's Office (1966-1972).
A1993-0010: Contains a video copy of the "Dedication of the Helen Sawyer-Hogg Telescope" and accompanying Scrapbook.
A2004-0023: Contains correspondence, work diaries, nightly observing summaries, Time Application Committee files, and project files for the Las Campanas Observatory, the Canadian Telescope in Chile. Also included are two drawings of the Las Campanas buildings - one of the dome and the other of Casa Canadiense, the residence.
A2005-0011: Contains scanned copies of photographs document the department of Astronomy and in particular the David Dunlap Observatory and Las Campanas telescope in Chili. Includes early views of the David Dunlap Observatory and grounds, memorabilia such as clippings regarding its opening, as well as photographs of telescopes and related instruments. There are also photographs of the University of Toronto Telescope in Chili and early photographs of DDO staff. (Files are jpg format, colour and black and white with a resolution of 200 ppi, print size approx. 3”x4”).

Four architectural drawings by James Balfour (1854-1917) who practised as an architect in Hamilton from 1876 to 1905. The drawings were executed for George A. Grover of Hamilton. One plan is dated 1883. The others are undated. Two receipts, dated 1884, are also included.

This collection of photographs and photographs of drawings of sixty-two Canadian authors was probably made about 1921. Some of the authors included are obscure, others are well-known such as Charles G.D. Roberts.
Correspondence, memoranda, notes, reports, minutes and addresses relating to Donald Clarke's involvement with the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research. Included are files on the opening of the Best Institute, and the following activities linked to the impending construction of the Medical Sciences Building: a review of the BBDMR, renovations to the Banting Institute (including a blueprint), and meetings Faculty of Medicine Advisory Committee on Audio-Visual Resources. Included is a photograph of Clarke and Charles H. Best (1970), and of a frigate and corvette on which Clarke served as a group radar officer during World War II (1944-1945).
