Contains the papers of Joan Treble (Sutton) Straus including a small amount of material regarding her early life including primary and high school education (1939-1950), as well as at her time at the University of Toronto (1950-1953). Includes material such as photographs and newspaper clippings related to her modeling career and her work as a fashion consultant (1952-1970). The collection covers Sutton Straus’ career as a journalist with the Toronto Telegram (1971), The Toronto Star (1972-1979, 1981-1992) and The Toronto Star (1979-1981, 1992). This includes correspondence from readers, co-workers and well-known politicians, entertainers and dignitaries, as well as photographs of Sutton Straus during the course of her work. The material also includes clippings of her columns, interviews and articles preserved by Sutton Straus, as well as three oversized scrapbooks containing clippings from her time at the Toronto Telegram and The Toronto Sun. The collection also comprises material related to Sutton Straus’ career as an author of six books, and her long-term volunteer work with non-profit and philanthropic organizations in both Canada and the United States. The collection also contains a small amount of personal material related to Sutton Straus including media appearances, speeches, newspaper and magazines articles, invitations and correspondence.

Most of the records in this fonds document Harris' research in the history of Higher Education, a subject on which he published widely and gave numerous addresses. Some limited documentation provides researchers with some information on his contributions to several administrative posts. There are also early lecture files on English literature which document his early teaching career and some files relating to the researching and writing of the university history although most of those records are in the records of the University Historian. Finally there are original university records collected by Harris regarding the University of Toronto Faculty Association and its predecessors.

Wrenshall, Professor in the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research, contain plans for experiments conducted by Prof. Wrenshall or with another individual, papers reviewed by Prof. Wrenshall as a member of the Editorial Board of "Diabetes", The Journal of the American Diabetes Association, reprints of articles, copies of Bulletin, correspondence requesting copies of reprints/publications. Correspondence, course notes as student (1941-1942), undergraduate teaching materials, research data files relating to minerals and x-ray crystallography, subject files of product catalogues by various corporations of Dr. E.W. Nuffield, Department of Geological Sciences.

Photographs of field work ca 1940s include photoprints and negatives documenting Prof. Nuffield's geological expeditions with the Geological Survey of Canada and the Ontario Department of Mines. Locations include Mason Creek - Germansen Landing District and Cash Creek British Columbia as well as the Montreal River District and Harker Township in Ontario.

This accession comprises the entire fonds of personal letters of Mrs. Elspeth Clark to her mother, Mrs. Isabella Bertram Fripp, dating from embarkation by ship with her two children, Edwin and Shirley, in July 1940 until May, 1944, shortly before their return to England. The letters written on a weekly basis describe travel conditions aboard ship and overland to Toronto, and details regarding day to day life of herself and her children as guests of the CBOC in Toronto. Details of daily life include living conditions, children’s schooling (Edwin at U.T.S. and Shirley at Bishop Strachan) illnesses and other medical needs, summer camps, and Mrs. Clark’s work with the Red Cross, Hart House, and the War Guest Mothers’ Club, among others. In addition to the letters from Mrs. Clark are also the occasional enclosed letters of her children, Edwin and Shirley, to their grandmother. Additional notes by her son, E.F. clarify context of some information such as her memoir. Letter log books (1940-1949) provide dates, to whom sent and summary of contents of each letter. The log books also include lists, name and addresses and other notes relating to their stay in Toronto. Also included are photographs documenting Mrs. Clark, her children and other people relating to their stay in Canada.

Fonds consists of records documenting the professional, personal and creative life of Dr. Vivian Rakoff, psychiatrist, administrator and professor. Records include correspondence, certificates, articles, research and background material, creative writing, sketches, and records relating to Dr. Rakoff’s many appearances on CBC programs, including tapes of the shows.

Records in this fonds mainly document Nancy Howell’s research on the !Kung San of Botswana. Her nearly three years researching in the field with her anthropologist husband Richard Lee were formative to a lifetime of research on the !Kung San hunter gatherers. Included is much of her original data that has formed the basis of her research in this area as well as the basis of research collaboration with others. More than half of this fonds is her original data on the !Kung San from that 1960s field trip.
Her two main works that are well documented in this accession are Surviving Fieldwork: Health and Safety in Anthropological Fieldwork (1990) and Life Histories of the Dobe !Kung (2010). Her teaching and administrative roles at the University of Toronto are not documented in this accession.

Collection consists of correspondence between the Music Library and various individuals, including students, staff, faculty, librarians, and other researchers; photographs of the library space and collections; materials pertaining to special projects at the library; and memorabilia collected over the years.

The fonds includes correspondence, diaries, writings, lecture and reading notes on various topics related to his position as an English professor, including a diploma, a diary, and one photograph. Also included is material from the many committees and societies with which he was involved such as the Trinity College Major Study Group and the Johnson Society.

Personal records of Mary Mamie O'Brien (1926-1998), philosopher and feminist scholar, Professor Emerita in the Department of Sociology in Education at OISE. Includes files on: her education; professional correspondence; extensive drafts and manuscripts of her research, writings, and addresses; artistic works (poetry, short stories and a play); and photographs of Mary O'Brien with colleagues and friends.

Records in this fonds document to varying degrees the dual aspects of Prof. Hume’s career – as a computer scientist and as a teacher of physics. This fonds does not, in any substantial way, document his many administrative roles within the University of Toronto or within professional associations.

For a good overview of his career, researchers should consult Series 1 Biographical for summary information on his achievements and career highlights. Series 3 Professional Correspondence also gives a good overview of what Prof. Hume was working on at a given period of time because it is varied in content and is arranged chronologically. Additional correspondence documenting these activities specifically can be found in Series 4 Publishing, Series 6 Professional Activities and Series 7 Broadcasting and Film. His research in computer science and the many ways he disseminated that knowledge through articles, talks, published works and teaching is documented in Series 4 Publishing, Series 5 Talks and Addresses and Series 6 Teaching. Researchers should note however that manuscripts do not exist for any of the computer science textbooks for which he was so well known nor are there extensive notes, memos or correspondence that discuss writing projects except some correspondence with publishers. There is, however, a good representation of his talks and lectures as well a manuscript and typescript of his textbook Physics in Two Volumes, co-authored with Donald Ivey.

His work in educational television and film is very well documented and is contained in Series 7 Broadcasting and Film. Records in this series will be of interest to researchers studying early Canadian broadcasting, educational television, and the teaching of science – in particular physics for general consumption. Several reports found in this series discuss the themes and goals of many of the programmes.

Finally, a lighter side of Prof. Hume can be found in Series 8 Arts and Letters Club, as it relates to his involvement in the Spring Review. Records in this series would be of interest to anyone researching amateur musical theatre and arts clubs generally.

This fonds consists of records about the life and career of Clifton Gardner as an Anglican priest in England and Canada as well as his time as Chaplain in the Royal Navy. The fonds includes some published and unpublished works authored by Gardner, his sermon notebooks, and a diary.

Series 1: Program environment
The first Roman Bittman and Marilyn Belec Bittman collection series is from the National Film Board (NFB) Program Environmental—a research film funded in 1974. The series consists of research notes, conceptual analysis, and the proposed working plan for other films to be produced by the National Film Board.
Series 2: Anglosea Guides
The second series consists of documents used in research and support of the documentary Anglosea. The files include research notes and other supporting documents. Records include the Anglosea Scheduling for Scriptwriting overseas (with additional written information), correspondences, schedule of visits on board Baltic and Oresund Ferries, and schedule of the Programme of Mr. Roman Bittman’s visit to the Arab Maritime Transport Academy. It also includes various business cards from the Ministry of Canada, transportation companies from Canada and international business cards (mainly Arab countries). The documents also contain guidebooks of the area and a navigation booklet for the teachers and students for the St. Lawrence seaway. The International Maritime Lecturers Association approved both manuals.
Series 3: NAAF Business – National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation
The National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (NAAF) is a charitable organization dedicated to raising funds to deliver programs that provide the tools necessary for Aboriginal peoples, especially youth, to achieve their potential. The Foundation has awarded more than $37 million in scholarships and bursaries to more than 9,800 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students nationwide. Roman Bittman produced the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation Awards show, and he also served as the organization’s interim CEO.
The series contains business cards of various government offices and businesses involved in supporting the NAAF. It includes the NAAF Five-year plan 2006-2010 as Roman Bittman’s acting CEO; it also consists of the verbatim of what he said and has comments to his plan. The series contains the planning and description of the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards. Business records includes the schedules for the Ottawa Meetings of the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation with John Watson, Mark Wilgen, Dahlia Stein, Jascha Jabes, Rick Hansen, and Pat Martin MP. Email correspondence on various business proposals and Roman Bittman assuming acting CEO duties. Lastly, the series also consists of financial documents for the NAAF.
Series 4: Man Alive
The fourth series focuses on the writings of Thomas Merton. Merton was an influential American Catholic author of the twentieth century. His autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain, has sold over one million copies, and he wrote over sixty other books and hundreds of poems and articles on topics ranging from spirituality to civil rights, and the nuclear arms race. The collection contains audio tapes of the interview and writings of Thomas Merton for Roman Bittman’s production, Man Alive. The tapes are titled Letter of Bernaro to Robert – Peter the Venerable letter of Defense; Race situations – St Basil Ascetical Discourse; Abelard and his Lark of Spiritual Insight; Silence and Makins signs; Poetry and Song; Chinese thought; and other tapes based on Thomas Merton travels.
Series 5: Agenda and Journals
The fifth series contains the agendas and journals that once belonged to Roman Bittman. His journals write of his personal life, but mostly his work, such as his research on Thomas Merton, his trip to Norway, sea battles in WWII and NATO. The agendas consist of meeting schedules, films he worked on, the contact information of his colleagues, and his travel and shooting schedules of various locations, such as his trip to Prince Edward Island, Miami, and Washington, DC. It also includes the agenda that belonged to Marilyn Belec, with her daily schedule and contact list of her colleagues.
Series 6: Awards
The sixth series consists of awards that Roman Bittman won during his extensive career and honoured after his death. Awards for his short films, early films and documentaries include the Screen awards, CFTA film awards, Family Life Film award, Banff International, American Film Festival and many more national and international Film Festival awards. It also includes the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards, which he attended and wrote a message in the award booklet. After his death, many people in the entertainment and the Indigenous community came together to celebrate, honour, and recognize Roman Bittman’s life works. Many include speeches on his achievements, tribute letters, and people sending in letters to various awards nominating him after his death.
Series 7: Roman Files
The seventh series consists of Roman Bittman’s files for researching various films, company correspondences, and corporate financial papers. Documents consist of research and proposals for the potential work of the Pilgrimage sent by Roman Bittman when he was a part of Marilyn Belec Bittman’s company, Mobius Media Corporation. Furthermore, he spent his time at CBC News before becoming a producer of the documentary series The Nature of Things. The seventh series also includes his travel documents and souvenirs. His academic and personal documents include his personal poem and writings; his Ryerson University (now called Toronto Metropolitan University) letters and photos of Ryerson class reunion, touring Ryerson’s new Rogers Communications Centre with his old classmates.
Series 8: Family History
The eighth series focuses on the research done on Roman Bittman’s family history and lineage. Documents include Roman Bittman’s Genealogy Chart. Roman Bittman’s aunt, Sarah Norjard, researched papers he collected in 1992. Research notes contain photography of Sarah and Roman with family, articles from the Record-Gazette and his Métis card. It also includes his family connections towards the Bourassa and St. Germain families, two notable family members in their province’s history.
Series 9: NSFDC – Nova Scotia Film Development Corporation
The ninth series contains his development in the Nova Scotia Film Development Corporation (NSFDC). Documents include press releases from the NSFDC from the board of directors’ appointments and letters from various media companies such as Screen Star group and Mobius media production—project letters for the plans to build and operate the province’s first full sound stage. It also includes a discussion on Roman Bittman’s contract as he served as President of the Nova Scotia Film Development Corporation but was later dismissed in 1996 after the NSFDC board rejected his financing plans for the sound stage.
Series 10: APTN – Aboriginal Peoples Television Network
The tenth series of the fonds contains documents of Roman Bittman’s involvement in the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN). Bittman was an early advisor to the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network which was launched in 1999 as the first national Indigenous broadcaster in the world. Since then, the network has become a global leader in programming that celebrates the rich diversity of Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island and beyond. The documents include the Aboriginal Broadcast Talent Directory book from the Centre for Aboriginal Media (CAM), press clippings on Roman Bittman establishing the National Aboriginal Television Network and business cards from various production companies, government cards, finance, and Hotel cards. Lastly, it includes the APTN Board of Directors/AGM Meeting and conference binder that provided investors and producers information on the APTN mission and the agenda for the APRN Teleconference meeting.
Series 11: Mobius Productions
The last series within the fonds is Roman and Marilyn Belec Bittman’s career and work in Mobius Media Productions. Marilyn Belec Bittman was president of the independent production firm, Mobius Productions, and Roman was a partner. Documents entail their correspondences on their various films and productions—government letters from the Ministry of Skills Development, Labour Canada, and other partners. Lastly, it includes corporation magazines and financial works such as Mobius Productions guide to film titles and price lists.

B2014-0008: Contains correspondence and several drafts of Robert H. Blackburn's memoir "From Barley Field to Academe". Much of the correspondence is between Karen Turko, the Director, Donor Relations and Development of the U of T Libraries, Chief Librarian's Office, and numerous proof readers and several publishing companies including the U of T Press. Personal records of Cope Weir Schwenger (M.D. 1948; D.P.H. 1954) documenting his career as a professor in the School of Hygiene (1959-1975) and the Faculty of Medicine (1975-1990). Schwenger had a distinguished career as a specialist in public health, preventitive medicine, and gerontology.

Consists of curriculum vitaes, personal and professional correspondence, research notes on unpublished materials, publications, addresses, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and photographs.

This fonds documents all aspects of Prof. Garrison’s career including his research, teaching and administrative duties. These functions are documented in various records including correspondence and e-mail, research notes and notebooks, lectures, talks, drafts of papers, minutes of meetings, agenda, reports and photographs. Records assembled by David Grenville relating to two projects on Omond McKillop Solandt: a proposed biography of him (never completed) and a symposium in his honour (1994) that was published as Perspectives in science and technology: the legacy of Omond Solandt. The files for the biography include original documents, research notes, correspondence, notes, manuscripts and addresses by Solandt (1957-1980) and 66 audio cassette tapes (with tape summaries by Jason Ridler) of interviews Grenville did with Solandt and his colleagues. The files on the symposium contain correspondence, minutes of meetings, notes, financial records, and partial drafts and copies of the book. There are also a number of accompanying photographs.

Collection of letters exchanged between William Brown (1917-1948), Royal Canadian Engineers Lieutenant, and Wilma Brown (née Perry) (1921-2003), Royal Canadian medical Corps Lieutenant, during World War II, in addition to related photographs.

William Brown (1917-1948) and Wilma Brown (née Perry) (1921-2003) met aboard the S. S. Bayano, a 6800-ton banana boat converted to transport troops from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Britain, in November 1943. Bill and Wilma were stationed in different parts of Europe, but stayed in contact by mail over the next two years. The couple married in 1945 and returned to Canada after the War, settling in Val d’Or, Quebec, where Bill worked as an engineer at the East Sullivan Gold Mine. They had one child together. Bill was killed in a mine accident on April 15, 1948. Wilma became a Professor of Anatomy at the University of Toronto, where she retired from in 1985. She passed away November 20, 2003.

The gift includes personal documents, photographs, a few DP camp periodicals, scripts for plays, and poems.

Photographs and cloth letters document the Medical Athletic Association. Included are 5 letters and the composite photographs for the Medical Athletic Executive for the years 1943-44, 1944-45 and 1945-46. Also included is one group shot of the University of Toronto Athletic Association, Intramural Sports Committee for 1945-46.

Collection consists of three cycles of original pen on paper drawings by Margaret Bloy Graham compiled into portfolio-style binders by the artist. The drawings in Look Out Browning: the British Poets Revisited and More Victoriana are illustrations for famous British poems selected from Palgrave’s Golden Treasury, a popular anthology of Victorian poetry originally published in 1861. The drawings are numbered and correspond to an accompanying list with excerpts from the poems illustrated, totaling thirty-six poems by twelve poets including Robert Browning, Percy B. Shelley and Alfred Tennyson, among others. The cycle Pictures with Morals features darkly comedic punishments for children who make mistakes like being too curious, sledding on Sunday, not reading the Bible daily, and trespassing.

Personal records of Professor James E. Guillet, documenting his academic and professional career as chemist with Eastman Kodak Company, as a professor of chemistry at the University of Toronto, and as an inventor and promoter of basic research and industrial application in the use and disposal of plastics and synthetic fibres. Includes correspondence, education, administrative and teaching activities; manuscripts of published and unpublished literary works, addresses, associations and conferences, grant applications and research files, laboratory notebooks, research notes and reports of students, post-doctoral fellows and visiting professors, files on consulting and on three high-technology companies he founded, patent files, and photographs.

Contents include one b/w photograph of the 1944 (4T4) graduating class of University of Toronto Chemical Engineering; signed au verso by class members; a certificate of degree; an offprint of an article co-authored with A. Dupre, published in Canadian Journal of Chemistry (1960), and a 25 year alumni certificate. Georgieff is thought to be one of the first Macedonians in Canada to graduate from university.

Laboratory notebooks and microscope slides relating to the activity, consumption, respiration, and vaginal smears of lemming, in particular, and other experiments by students or research assistants of Professor Fisher; presidential address and articles by Fisher.

This fonds documents Professor Kenneth McNeill's research and publishing activities through professional correspondence (Series 1), drafts and typescript of articles, reviews, addresses, referee reports, research data and notes (Series 2 &3). Series 3, in particular, documents research undertaken in the Steel Room in the Department of Physics. Series 4, 5 and 6 document some of his administrative duties within the University and in particular Electron Linear Accelerator committee, and the Radiation Protection Authority. Lecture notes (Series 7) from courses taught both at the University of Glasgow (1952-1957) and at the University of Toronto (1958-1996) document his teaching responsibilities, while early course notes (Series 9) document his education at Oxford in the 1940s.

Prof. McNeill was also an active consultant outside the University, mainly for government but also for industry. Series 8 contains files relating to this consultancy work and in particular to his work on nuclear preparedness for Emergency Planning Ontario, a department within the Ontario Solicitor General’s office. Series 10 contains the collected material for a study on radon levels in Newfoundland mines that Prof. McNeill did for the Atomic Energy Board of Canada.

B1977-0009: Correspondence, minutes, financial records, and other material relating to the 2nd International Immunological Congress at Brighton, England, July 22-26, 1974; files on the European Congress for Immunochemistry; abstracts from the 1975 European Immunology Meeting held in Amsterdam. B1977-0024: Correspondence, minutes, questionnaires, and reports documenting Professor Cinader's activities as president of the Canadian Society for Immunology and the International Union of Immunological Societies, and with the 1st International Congress of Immunology held in Washington, DC in 1971. Included are files on the opening of the Best Institute, and the following activities linked to the impending construction of the Medical Sciences Building: a review of the BBDMR, renovations to the Banting Institute (including a blueprint), and meetings Faculty of Medicine Advisory Committee on Audio-Visual Resources. Included is a photograph of Clarke and Charles H. Best (1970), and of a frigate and corvette on which Clarke served as a group radar officer during World War II (1944-1945).

Includes copies of letters, telegrams, and postcards sent home, newspaper clippings, Christmas and Mother's Day cards issued by the Army, hand-drawn maps, photographs of the soldiers in Smith's division and the areas in which they were stationed, French and German currency, printed maps annotated by Smith, and German-language leaflets dropped by American forces to instruct enemy soldiers on the process of surrendering.

Fonds consists of research notes, draft articles, published articles, reports, budgets and correspondence created and accumulated by Alan Thomas in the course of his activities as a student, scholar and professor of adult education and an advocate for adult education. He was a contributing editor to foundational textbooks on adult education, including “Learning for Life,” and has held executive and board positions with the Canadian Association for Adult Education and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. Dr. Thomas is perhaps best known for his role in developing Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR) in the community college system – whereby individuals can have life experience and non-institutional learning acknowledged and accredited within formal educational settings.

Collection contains personal and professional papers relating to Howard Engel. These papers contain extensive material on the novels,
books, screenplays, playscripts and radio episodes of Engel. This notably includes drafts for all fourteen novels in the Benny Cooperman series, many including prolific drafts with holograph and editorial revisions. Also included in the collection are extensive drafts for Engel’s final Cooperman novel, Over the River, which was slated to be published in both 2016 and 2018 but was eventually cancelled by the publisher, along with the complete drafts for two unpublished Benny Cooperman novels, and partial drafts and outlines for three additional novels. In addition to his fictional writing, the archives include poetry, articles, reviews, and drafts and proofs for his works of non-fiction. In particular, there are extensive drafts for the memoir of his 2001 stroke, The Man Who Forgot How to Read, the book was originally intended as an autobiography and several earlier drafts exist which detail Engel’s childhood, adolescence and adulthood. During the process of recovering from his stroke, Engel became acquainted with Oliver Sacks, who would later pen an article on Engel in The New Yorker and would go-on to write the afterword of Engel’s memoir. Their extensive correspondence, along with several drafts of Sacks is also present. In addition to material related to Engel’s professional career as a writer, including photographs and press clippings, as well as speeches given over the course of several decades. Engel’s career as a journalist, writer and producer at the CBC is well-documented through scripts and research written or produced by Engel, which is further augmented by audio tapes and reels. The personal life of Engel is well-documented through a nearly complete set of diaries dating between 1991 and 2019, with additional diaries dating from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1980s, as well as photographs, mementos and through correspondence of a personal and professional nature. The collection contains manuscripts written by other writers, often sent to Engel for feedback or as gifts, this includes drafts or proofs from Kildare Dobbs, Mavis Gallant, Eric Wright and Jack Batten.
