This collection consists of biographical information, certificates and diplomas, correspondence relating to Dr. Welsh’s employment as Chairman of the Department of Physics, with officials of the Order of Canada, his retirement, the H.L. Welsh Lectureship, and other honors. The collection also includes notes and outlines from four interviews done for the U of T Oral History Programme. The collection includes four photographs, several degrees, awards, certificates, and posters. This collection has been divided into three series based on the form and content of the records; 1) Correspondence and Biographical Material, 2) Degrees, Awards, and Certificates, and 3) Photographs.

Four chronologically ordered volumes relating to research carried out by Professor George F Wright on Second World War defence projects for the federal government of Canada through the National Research Council of Canada.

The first volume is Defence Project CE-12 and encompassses the dates December, 1939 to June, 1942. It contains a series of chemical research reports related to wartime defence initiatives. The following three volumes consists of reports to ACE (Associate Commitee on Explosives) covering the dates August 1944 to June 1945. They contain reports, previously marked 'secret' relating to wartime research and experimentation on the explosive properties of compounds. Some of the reports contain photographs tipped in; there is also a file of loose photographs and correspondence.

Personal records of Frederic Urban, artist and lecturer in architecture, documenting his education, teaching and professional activities, particularly from his entering the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design in 1975 through his teaching at the University of Waterloo and the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto. Includes correspondence, notes, teaching materials, files on research in Italy and on exhibitions and performance. Also includes files on visiting lectureships, especially at the Nanjing Institute of Technology/South East University in Nanjing, China (1987-1988), architectural drawings, photographs, slides, posters, publications, film and video.

Fonds consists of 4 accessions of records documenting Professor Drummond's academic career, from his years as a doctoral student at Yale to his final years as professor of economics at the University of Toronto. B1997-0024: These records document the activities of Brian Land as an undergraduate at the University of Toronto and as a librarian; as executive assistant (1963-1964) to Walter Gordon when, as Minister of Finance, he presented his first budget in the House of Commons in 1963; as a member of the executive of the Davenport-Dovercourt Liberal Association (Gordon’s constituency), and as advisor to and partial author of Gordon’s incomplete memoir, Pursuit of an ideal – Canadian independence. They also cover his involvement in the 1962 federal election (the subject of his MA thesis) that was published in 1965 as Eglinton: the election study of a federal constituency. B2008-0015: This accession documents Prof. Land’s professional activities with the Canadian Library Association, the Ontario Library Association and the Institute of Professional Librarians prior to his appointment as Director of the School of Library Science in 1964. There is only one file related to talks on the University of Toronto Library to classes such as Paul Fox’s political science class. (5 boxes, 1957-1963)

The William Edward Gallie fonds consists of 6 series based largely on his work as a surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Toronto General Hospital, as well as his role at the University of Toronto as Dean and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine. The majority of the records relate to Gallie’s publications, lectures, public addresses, and research. The fonds also includes a small amount of personal ephemera such as event invitations and newspaper clippings. The W. E. Gallie fonds consists of the following series: 1) Writings & Publication Drafts, 2) Lectures and Public Addresses, 3) Research, 4) Correspondence, 5) Personal Ephemera, and 6) Photographs & Graphic Materials.

Fonds documents Allan Irving’s activities from 1976 to 1998 as a doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto Faculty of Social Work; as lecturer and/or professor at King’s College (University of Western Ontario), at the Faculty of Social Work (University of Toronto), at the Nipissing College (Laurentian University) and Wilfrid Laurier University. It also partially documents his other professional and scholarly activities, publications and writings, lectures and addresses from 1978 to 1999.

This fonds contains the personal papers of Prof. Fritz Moritz Heichelheim, mainly while professor of classics at the University of Toronto (1948-1968) and in academic positions at Universities in Britain such as Cambridge and Nottingham University.

The largest series (Series 1) contains correspondence spanning 46 years received from friends, family and colleagues living in North America as well as Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Correspondence is in mostly English and German depending on the language of the writer. Some of Prof. Heichelheim’s outgoing replies will be found scrawled on the back of the incoming letter or as a separate documents. The completeness of this series documents Prof. Heichelheim’s wide interest in classical studies, numismatics and papyri translation. Other series document some of his teaching and research activities, mainly at universities in England as well as his literary works on Roman and Greek history also in both English and German. No manuscripts for his major books such as his published thesis in the 1930’s or his collaborative works such as A history of the Roman people (1962) with C. A. Yeo have been found.

His extensive work in numismatics however will be found in Series 5. This series contains the manuscript and photographs for his catalogue Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum Vol. IV of the General and Leake Collections at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge produced mainly during the late 1930’s to the 1950s. Records in this series provide some documentation on the joint project of University of Toronto and Heichelheim’s previous employer, the University of Giessen in Germany. This project directed by Prof. Heichelheim during the 1950s dealt with the translation and publication of the Giessen papyrus and ostraka (handwriting on pottery).

Fonds consists of biographical and personal records, family and professional correspondence, tributes, field notes, interviews, research notes, subject notes, unpublished and published manuscripts including versions of "History of Communication" manuscript. Correspondence, briefs, reports and other material relating to the Nova Scotia Royal Commission on Provincial Economic Inquiry, 1934, and assembled by Harold Adams Innis who was a member of the Commission. The mimeographed copies of the hearings and the final report are in Government Publications, Robarts Library. This fonds contains the personal and professional papers of Dr. Helen Sawyer Hogg documenting her contribution to professional astronomy, her high regard as a popular educator as well as her responsibilities as a parent, daughter, wife and friend. The records have been arranged into series either by type of record or to reflect a certain type of activity. Records documenting various aspects of her career are filed first, followed by papers reflecting her personal life.

Included is both professional and personal correspondence; records relating to her activities on associations, boards and organizations; records such as draft manuscripts, correspondence and outlines and data relating to her publishing activities and research; papers relating to her education and her teaching responsibilities; as well as diaries and family papers series.

Because Dr. Hogg's career spanned nearly seven decades during a time astronomy as a discipline was still developing both nationally and internationally, these records are not only useful to those researching Dr. Hogg's achievements but will be insightful to those researchers studying the development of astronomy as a science and profession. Moreover, Dr. Hogg was a woman in a field of science, which is still dominated by men. Those studying women's history may find Dr. Hogg's personal records a useful case study in one woman's success in a largely male dominated profession.

Contained within the Helen S. Hogg personal records are three sous-fonds: Frank S. Hogg [1922-1952], her first husband and also an astronomer at the David Dunlap Observatory; Prof. Ruth Northcott [1932-1969], close personal friend and professional colleague of Helen Hogg, also on staff at the D.D.O.; Dr. C.A. Chant [193- - 194-], director emeritus of the D.D.O and head of the Department of Astronomy at the University of Toronto from 1904-1935. These sous-fonds are individually described and have been filed after the Helen Hogg personal records.

Fonds consists of records documenting the career of Irvine Glass as a specialist in shock waves, a professor and administrator at the Institute for Aerospace Studies and his personal interest in the Jewish peoples through his involvement, in particular, with Canadian Professors for Peace in the Middle East, the Committee of Concerned Scientists, and the Sino-Judaic Institute.

Fonds documents research undertaken by Gwynneth Heaton in 1993 and 1994 to investigate the provision of reference services in medical school libraries. The investigation examined factors that may affect reference service such sa the proximity of other desks providing information; the type of staff providing the service; the variety of services provided; the provision of research assistance by appointment; the physical proximity of a hospital; and the use of problem based learning in the medical school curriculum. The project involved a mail survey and follow up visits to selected medical libraries in Canada and the United States. The results of this research were published in various academic library journals.

The accession consists of correspondence, questionnaires, raw survey data, research notes and manuscripts of published and unpublished articles resulting from Ms. Heaton's research project.

B2012-0008: Records belonging to Dr. Ray Farquharson (1897-1965) document professional trips, meetings and awards. Included is correspondence, notes, agenda and memorabilia. Also included in this donation are records relating to Dr. Ray Farquharson collected by colleagues James Dauphinee and Bob Kerr and passed to the Farquharson family. Finally, there are a set of early letters belonging to Dr. Farquharson’s uncle, University of Toronto alumnus, Dr. Edgar Nesbitt Coutts (M.B. 1900). The letters mainly cover his time as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the First World War and afterwards in a Swiss sanatorium recovering from tuberculosis. Announcements, programmes and related material pertaining to the Toronto meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1921) and the British Association for the Advancement of Science (1924); files relating to physics conferences and the teaching of physics at the University of Toronto, 1921-1939; photographs of the Dominion Meteorological Service Building.

The records cover Dr. Eichler’s professional work: speeches, publications, and correspondence; legal work; important documentation regarding the Coalition for the Establishment of a Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies, as well as follow up material related to the Commission. Eichler served as part of the committee that established five new Women’s Studies chairs at Canadian institutions and that work and process is documented here. Finally, there is a limited amount of research and papers not already documented in the other series, including Eichler’s days as a student. There is a small collection of media, primarily audio recordings, as well as some photographs, and the DVD Eichler produced Household Work: More than it Seems.

This accession documents Prof. Ivey’s career as professor of physics and university administrator from the time of his appointment in 1950 to his post retirement activities up to 1994. Prof. Ivey’s career centred around the promotion and teaching of the science of physics both at the university level and the secondary school level. His personal and professional correspondence concerns these two activities. Other records document his work with high schools and the provincial Department of Education in developing curriculum for high school physics courses, as well as his administrative and academic responsibilities at the University of Toronto. An extensive collection of his lecture notes, problems and examinations for undergraduate courses in physics at the University of Toronto will also be found in this accession.

His activities outside the University are documented in the records relating to his television programmes prepared for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and other public television companies. This accession contains many complete scripts of these programs including “The Nature of Things” series in the 1960’s. In addition this accession holds a very complete series of addresses including manuscripts, notes and correspondence.

While Prof. Ivey did publish articles and two textbooks on physics during his academic career, little original documentation in the form of manuscripts has survived. Correspondence on publishing may be found within his professional correspondence.

Fonds consists of material documenting the professional life and work of Prof. Judith Friedland. Records focus on her education and career within academia, in particular as a professor, and former Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy. Material also covers some aspects of Prof. Friedland’s career working as an occupational therapist. Records include typescripts and presentation notes, administrative records from the Department of Occupational Therapy, teaching and course material, clinical notes, correspondence, awards, and biographical material.

The history of occupational therapy in Canada has significant coverage through records related to the research and publication of Prof. Friedland’s book, Restoring the Spirit, as well as through the collected records of Helene Primrose LeVesconte, Thelma Cardwell, and Isobel Robinson. Represented in Series 8 to 10, these three individuals each served as former heads of the UofT’s Department of Occupational Therapy, in addition to teaching and practicing occupational therapy. The collected historical material includes minutes, typescripts, correspondence, artifacts and teaching material.

B1998-0034: This accession consists of the professional records of James Maurice Stockford Careless and documents his career as a student, teacher, writer, and historian at the University of Toronto. Unfortunately, many of Professor Careless’ early records were destroyed or damaged in a flood at Sidney Smith Hall in 1958. As a result, this accession mainly documents Dr. Career’s later career. Most of this accession pertains to his research and writing, most notably, his work on Brown of the Globe. However, Professor Careless’ student, teaching, administrative, and professional activities are also documented. B2001-0020: Typescripts for various publications written by J.M.S. Careless including 'Canadian Heritage', 'Ontario Frontier and Metropolis', 'Toronto to 1918', and 'Brown of the Globe'. [Found in series 6: Writings and research] (3 boxes, 1959-1989)

This fonds contains Etienne Gilson's correspondence, articles, lectures and pocket diaries for the period 1927-1978. It also contains biographical material, copies of articles in journals, articles by others about Gillson, some reviews of his published works, memorabilia, and the notebooks of Abbe Andre Gilson, younger brother of Etienne. In addition there are photographs and audio cassettes.

Personal records of Helen J. Breslauer, consisting primarily of a study of which she was a principal investigator along with Professor Howard Andrews, “Co-operative housing: a case study of decision-making in design and user satisfaction” (1968-1975). This fonds also includes files relating broadly to the development of an urban studies programme at Erindale College, with particular emphasis on course CGR/SOC 340E: “Concepts, methods, and values in urban studies” (1972-1976).

Seven of the eight series in this fonds deal with the Co-operative housing case study and are arranged according to the areas of research mapped out in the interim reports [see Series 7]. In addition there is an administrative series and a reports series which provide an overview of the research methodology, findings and administration of the research project.

Rules for compiling and copy of a logging report (with photographs), "Logging Operation of J.R. Booth Co. Ltd.," by Charles P. Howard and Robert M. Bullock, carried out for the Faculty of Forestry in 1931; "Notes on logging dam construction" by J. A. Gilles, Upper Ottawa Improvement Co., 1931; table of wages for logging and sawmill industry, 1913-1931; sketch maps, a sketch of equipment, and publications relating to the forest products industry in Ontario.

Fonds consists primarily of the academic and professional records of Robert William McKay and
is divided into five series:

5. Employment.

Apart from materials from McKay’s time as a student at the University of Toronto, the fonds is
mostly devoid of personal records.

The fonds consists of the personal papers of Gilbert Edward Jackson, a former professor of economics at the University of Toronto. Compiled from inventories of three accessions, the fonds documents Mr. Jackson’s career, participation and achievements as an economist, consultant and professor in Canada and England, during the early 1920s to late 1950s, with the greatest emphasis being on the mid 1930s to early 1950s. Arranged chronologically by function, the fond is divided into ten series. They include: Personal material, related to various activities, accomplishments and events that occurred in Mr. Jackson’s private life; Teaching activities; Manuscripts written by Mr. Jackson; the Canadian Tariff Board; the National War Labour Board; the National Selective Service Advisory Board; Other Federal Government research and reports; the Bank of England; his consulting firm, Gilbert Jackson & Associates; and Photographs.

Within the fonds, a cross over among these series exists as the research Mr. Jackson completed for himself was also utilized for assignments produced for other consulting economists and firms. For instance, the research that was completed to write submissions to the Canadian Tariff Board (Series 4) was also utilized to publish articles located in Series 3 (Manuscripts) and Series 9 (Gilbert Jackson & Associates). Related topics can also be found in Series 5 (National War Labour Board) through Series 7 (Other Federal Government research and reports, as they document the extensiveness of Mr. Jackson’s involvement and research completed for the Federal Government of Canada between the late 1920s to 1950s. Although the material within the series are for different Boards, this cross over among the series documents Mr. Jackson’s involvement and active role within the world of Canadian economics during the mid twentieth century.

Although Mr. Jackson taught at the University of Toronto for roughly 15 years, only a small amount of records exist in the fonds that document his teaching career. The records that do exist in Series 2, (Teaching activities) provide a brief overview of the themes covered and issues addressed during his lectures delivered in the 1950’s. However, additional documents related to Mr. Jackson’s academic career at the University of Toronto can be found in Series 3 (Manuscripts), the correspondence in Series 8 (Bank of England), and Series 9 (Gilbert Jackson & Associates) as the records within the files highlight his relationships, activities, teaching and mentoring of graduate students who attended the University of Toronto.

This fonds will be of great interest to researchers studying the financial condition of Canada and England during the Great Depression and First and Second World Wars. An individual who sharpened the minds of the youth at the time, Gilbert Jackson’s fonds documents the ideologies that shaped the economic world of today, as “it has been said that half the leading economists in Canada today studied under him” [1]

Personal records of George Brown, including personal and professional correspondence, course notes (?), lecture notes in Canadian and American history, including mimeographed ones prepared for the Prisoner of War camps in Canada during World War II (1943-1944); research notes, drafts of articles and offprints; bibliography cards; glass-plate negatives and card index to photographs.

Most of the records in this fonds document Harris' research in the history of Higher Education, a subject on which he published widely and gave numerous addresses. Some limited documentation provides researchers with some information on his contributions to several administrative posts. There are also early lecture files on English literature which document his early teaching career and some files relating to the researching and writing of the university history although most of those records are in the records of the University Historian. Finally there are original university records collected by Harris regarding the University of Toronto Faculty Association and its predecessors.

This accession consists of the personal records of Marion Dorothy Walker. The records document Ms. Walker’s activities as a production assistant for Hart House Theatre, as a professor in the University of Toronto Department of Fine Art and as a creative writer. These records pertain to the educational and professional life of N.J. Turnbull. They consist primarily of material related to N.J. Turnbull’s time as a student at the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto, including class notes and assignments. There are also materials generated as a result of employment—both as a summer student during his university studies as well as following his graduation—which consists primarily of field notes and reports. There are also several photographs that pertain to N.J. Turnbull's career, including 432 photographs of the Royal Commission on Forestry relating to Newfoundland and Labrador in 1954.

Also included in these records are a collection of logging reports produced by John Fulton Turnbull, N.J. Turnbull's father. These reports relate predominantly to J.F. Turnbull’s position of District Forester of the North Bay Ontario Forestry Branch and the Annual Reports generated as a result.

Fonds consists of the personal records of Prof. David R. Cameron, political scientist. The majority of the records document Prof. Cameron’s work with the federal and provincial governments, rather than his academic work.

Much of the fonds documents Prof. Cameron’s work with the federal and Ontario governments on constitutional renewal, national unity, and French-English relations in the late 1970s and 1980s. In particular, there is significant documentation of the Pépin-Robarts Task Force on Canadian Unity, and Cameron’s work with the Federal-Provincial Relations Office. Prof. Cameron’s work on post-secondary education with the Secretary of State is also well documented, as is his work on constitutional renewal and Ontario-Quebec relations with the Ontario government in the 1990s.

Records relating to this government service include day planners and steno pads, correspondence and memos, briefings, news clippings, government documents, reports, proposals, research and background files, travel records, contracts, drafts and revisions, and meeting agendas, minutes and briefings.

Fonds also includes records relating to Prof. Cameron’s involvement with the Romanow Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada (2001-2003), the Walkerton Inquiry (2001-2002), and the Sri Lankan peace process (2002-2005).

Academic records include employment records, correspondence, some conference files, and publication files, especially those related to his Patterns of Association project (1997-2006).

Correspondence, essays, theses, and photographs documenting Herbert Pottle's graduate studies in psychology at the University of Toronto under Professor E. A. Bott, with some correspondence and press coverage of Pottle's subsequent activities.

Records document the lives of Mary Jacqueline Rosevear and her partner Margaret Brodie Scott (BA 1942, BLS 1957), including school work, family correspondence, memorabilia, degrees, and records relating to school librarianship. Photographs include photos of the two women, family and friends, and school library activities.

Fonds consists of records documenting the life and work of Dr. Peter H. Brieger, including his early career in Germany and his later research on medieval manuscripts and the Bible. Records include correspondence, notebooks, lectures, articles, research notes and manuscripts. One series also documents the activities of the Fine Art Club at the University of Toronto. Photographs consists of those taken of illuminated manuscripts, for research purposes.

These records document the academic career of Professor Laurel Sefton MacDowell, a labour and environmental historian and professor at the University of Toronto. The records consist of personal and biographical information (including MacDowell's time as an undergraduate and graduate student at the U of T), her lecture notes and syllabi for courses taught at U of T, York, and McMaster, her publications and research, her professional activities (both inside and outside academia), and general correspondence.
