Collection includes holograph and typescript drafts of Josef Škvorecký’s works (novels, travelogues, literary essays, film scripts), as well as correspondence, juvenilia, and other material relating to his life and work.

Fonds consists of correspondence/subject files and general files that are primarily related to faculty, other academic staff and courses. Also consists of records related to the Victoria College Council and its committees as well as U of T committees upon which the Principal sat. There are gaps in the records for the brief periods when the Principal's Office was served by the incumbent President: 1928-1932, 1941-1944, and 1966-1967. Records in this fonds mainly document Nancy Howell’s research on the !Kung San of Botswana. Her nearly three years researching in the field with her anthropologist husband Richard Lee were formative to a lifetime of research on the !Kung San hunter gatherers. Included is much of her original data that has formed the basis of her research in this area as well as the basis of research collaboration with others. More than half of this fonds is her original data on the !Kung San from that 1960s field trip.
Her two main works that are well documented in this accession are Surviving Fieldwork: Health and Safety in Anthropological Fieldwork (1990) and Life Histories of the Dobe !Kung (2010). Her teaching and administrative roles at the University of Toronto are not documented in this accession.

The fonds consists of Peter Jones’s records pertaining to his activities as a minister, author and translator, and to his personal life. Records include correspondence; autobiographical material; hymns in translation (1877); histories of the Ojibwa Indians; (notes for) sermons and other professional material; diaries (1829), journals, photographs and other personal material; miniature portraits of Peter Jones and Eliza Field (by Matilda Jones); material about Jones including leaflets and clippings; and other material including petitions from Natives (1826–1844). Materials relating to Eliza Jones (née Field) include correspondence, primarily with members of her family; personal material including notes on sermons, 20 diaries/notebooks (1823–1883) and photographs; and other material. Also included in the collection are materials relating to John Sunday, including a photograph, a clipping, the record of his ordination as a minister and a bible.

Fonds consists of research and other records relating to Smith's publications on the history of Aboriginal Canada, in particular Sacred Feathers and Mississauga Portraits. See the finding aid for details.

Fonds includes computer-generated scores and parts for his original works, as well as his many arrangements for violoncello ensembles of works by other composers, written 1965-2006. Many of the arrangements were done for The Yale Cellos; Aldo Parisot and The Yale Cellos; Shauna Rolston; The Banff Violas; Lee Armstrong and the Birmingham Cello Group. Many contain program notes.

Fonds consists of records pertaining to George Ignatieff’s professional career and personal life. Genealogical information about the Ignatieff family documents their lives in Russia and immigration to Canada. Some records relate to the Parkin and Grant familes. Family records include memoirs, diaries, photographs, student records, journals and correspondence. Ignatieff’s professional life as a diplomat with the Canadian government is documented by correspondence, subject files, speeches, reports, newspaper clippings and photographs.
Records from 1972 to 1986 are mainly from Ignatieff’s career as an administrator at the University of Toronto. These records were generated during day-to-day operations of these offices and include correspondence, subject files, speeches, writings, clippings and notebooks. In addition, there are documents associated with other organizations and activities in which he was involved, as well as documents relating to his honorary degrees and awards. Extensive background material and drafts trace the evolution of Ignatieff’s published memoir, The Making of a Peacemonger.

The J. Blair Seaborn fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Seaborn relating to his career as a public servant, and as a private citizen. Some records are contemporary with his work in a variety of public service postings, but many were created post-retirement when he was involved in the documentation of his work in Vietnam, and continued projects that continued his interest in the environment.

Fonds consists primarily of diplomatic reports and correspondence between embassies and the Canadian government in Ottawa generated during the rescue of six American diplomats from Iran (known as the Canadian Caper). Also includes interview transcripts, newspaper clippings, and correspondence produced after the fact.

Records of two generations of the Hastings family, relating primarily to Elgin Rowland and Mary Ferguson Hastings and their son, John Elgin Ferguson Hastings. Included are course notes and laboratory notes, certificates and photographs documenting Elgin Hastings’ years (1908 – 1913) as a medical student at the University of Toronto, and correspondence, certificates and photographs relating to his wife’s life and activities. Most of the records document the activities of John Hastings as a student, especially the University of Toronto Schools and medicine (1945 – 1954) at the University of Toronto; his career as a professor of and administrator in public health administration at the University of Toronto (1956 – 1993), and as an advisor and consultant on community and public health issues from the local to international levels. The correspondence includes many letters from contacts in India, Japan, and elsewhere internationally; there are also research materials, manuscripts of articles, books and addresses, conference files; studies, including the Royal Commission on Health Services, the Community Health Centre project, the Sault Ste. Marie study and the Canadian Caribbean Health Initiative; and files on his involvement with Canadian Council of Churches projects and with the United Church of Canada. Included are photographs, an audiotape, two videos, and a number of artifacts.

This fonds documents the administrative and teaching duties of Robert Spencer, as a Professor Emeritus of History and a specialist in European history, especially German history in the 19th and 20th centuries. They also document his education and his participation in World War II; his extensive international research, publications and speaking engagements; as well as his involvement with professional associations and organizations such as the University of Toronto Contingent, Canadian Officers Training Corps (COTC), the International Studies Programme and the Graduate Centre for International Studies, Altantik-Brücke, and the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE). Included is personal correspondence, correspondence with international organizations, government departments, embassies and consulates; lecture notes; manuscripts and addresses.

Also present are two sous-fonds. The first is the personal papers of his wife, Ruth Margaret Church Spencer, who served with the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRENS) during World War II as a base librarian and afterwards as the first professional librarian at Canada House in London. The second consists of files compiled by Ralph Flenley, a specialist in German history and sometime chair of the Department of History: examination questions, student mark books, and drafts of an unpublished manuscript on Anglo-German relations.

In addition to Council minutes and related material, there are files on several presidential advisory committees, the Advisory Planning Committee of the Board of Govemors, the University's Master Plan, the School of Hygiene, tenure (Haist Committee), and the Council's Sub-committee on Resource Planning. Included is material documenting the participation of professors C. B. Macpherson and J. B. Conacher.

Fonds consists of 4 accessions of records. This fonds consists of materials from 15 different family members and is arranged in series based on the size of the materials from each member (with six family members contributing to most of this fonds). There are 8 series overall (with series 7 consisting of additional family members and series 8 as the photography series). Each series within
this fonds predominantly consists of correspondence between family members, legal documents, financial records, articles, diaries, genealogical research, and analog photographs, and a video. This fonds also consists of objects such as medals, ribbons,
and an engraved plate. See accession-level descriptions for further detail.

Fonds consists of research material gathered by John Hadwen as source material for his manuscript on the Colombo Plan. He appears to have worked on this project at two different points: during a year leave to study in Geneva in 1971-72 and after his retirement in 1987. Included are original documents and later photocopies of External Affairs documents, published material, internal printed documents for delegates to Colombo Plan Consultative Committee meetings, correspondence, briefing notes, and draft manuscripts. The final copy of Hadwen's manuscript on the Colombo Plan, and his correspondence with a publisher, are also included.

Personal records of Murray Alexander Wilton document his student years at University of Toronto and his subsequent involvement in the University of Toronto Athletic Association (UTAA). Student papers include: course lecture notes, essays and exams for courses mainly in economics, accounting, finance as well as some general Arts courses such as English, History and Psychology. Professors whose courses are documented included A.F.W. Plumptre (Political Economy), Vincent Bladen (Political Economy), Gilbert Jackson (Commerce and Finance), W.S. Ferguson (Accounting) and S.S. Cassidy (Social Science). There is also one photograph 1931-32, House Committee of Hart House. These student records date from 1929 to 1932.

From the mid 1960s to the early 1990s, Wilton was very active on both the UTAA Advisory Board and T-Holder's Association. Correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, agenda and notes document his activities on these two bodies. Of particular note is a 1968 report Wilton wrote for the Advisory Board regarding the role and influence of the UTAA Advisory Board. There is also one photograph of one of the UTAA committees circa 1965. These records date from 1961-1993 with the bulk of them dated from 1967-1973.

The records that make up the Arthur M. Zimmerman fonds document his professional activities and research endeavours from the 1960s to the present. They are rich in correspondence and manuscript drafts of articles and seminars that document the collaborative research efforts among Zimmerman and his colleagues. The correspondence files are especially insightful on Zimmerman’s relationship with his students both while they were under his supervision and later in their careers. Series of professional correspondence, recommendations, reviews and editorial positions give evidence to Zimmerman’s role as an expert whose knowledge and opinions were sought by his peers. Finally, records that reflect his teachings of courses within in the Department of Zoology are contained more or less in one series, Teaching Files.

Finally as one might expect in personal records, there is very little evidence of his role in University administrative positions. Neither is there any significant amount of records documenting his personal life. The Personal Correspondence series, for example, contains mainly correspondence regarding professional appointments and remuneration.

These records will be of general interest to researchers studying the history of science and particularly of cellular biology, the history of the teaching of science, and the history of any of the associations to which Dr. Zimmerman was active. It may also be useful to those researching the role of scientists in society in general, especially with respect to their influence on issues surrounding drug abuse.

This collection is comprised of correspondence, documents, photographs and art works, and genealogical materials from England, India, the U.S.A, Cuba, the Philippines, and Canada, dating from 1838-1999, and related to Alfred Tripe (1818-1854), his sister Emily (Tripe) James (1817-1850), their first cousin Mary Broad (Tripe) De Rusett (1820-1898), and their relatives and descendants.

Personal records of Dr. Daniel W. Lang, professor, Department of Theory and Policy Studies, OISE/UT, and senior policy advisor to the president of the University of Toronto. Records include files relating to his activities as a senior administrator and policy advisor to University presidents James Ham, David Strangway, George Connell, Robert Prichard, and David Naylor. Files document projects, plans, financing, campus development, technology development, etc. Also includes records documenting his academic responsibilities relating to teaching, research and publication, as well as external consulting activities to various academic institutions and government bodies in Ontario and across Canada, particularly the Council of Ontario Universities and the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities.

Records of Joan Winearls, map librarian at the University of Toronto, consisting of correspondence, course and lecture notes, addresses, diaries, articles, research files for and drafts of the manuscript of "Mapping Upper Canada, 1780-1867", articles on Allan Brooks, and her Catalogue of Allan Brooks artwork. There are also conference files, relating in particular to the Canadian Cartographic Association, the International Cartographic Association, and the Conference on Editorial Problems 1993 conference in Toronto, ‘Editing Early and Historical Atlases’. There are also exhibition files associated with this conference and with ‘Mapping Toronto’s first century’, a 1984 exhibition mounted as part of the 200th anniversary celebrations of the City of Toronto.

These accessions of personal records provide a fairly complete representation of Samuel Hollander’s professional life as an academic. The accessions cover his entire career from his student days at the London School of Economics to his retirement from the University of Toronto in 1998 and his appointment at Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel in 2000. Correspondence, found in the various series gives a rich commentary on his professional endeavours and gives a good overview of the debates surrounding Hollander’s work. Lecture notes and taped lectures document how his ideas were taught in the classroom and his Ph.D. files found in Series 5 show his dedication to the teaching and mentor roles for which he is so highly regarded.

Consists of pages removed from a scrapbook, containing black and white photographs of life at St. Hilda's College, Queen Street campus.

The collection consists of miscellaneous correspondence, research notes and translations, publications and memorabilia relating to the Kirkwood family.

Collection includes letters and postcards addressed to Lilian Wetstein Mendelssohn from Anne, Gertrude and Horace Traubel. Horace Traubel (1858-1919) was Walt Whitman’s literary executor, as well as a poet, essayist and magazine publisher. Horace and his wife Anne (1864-1954) cultivated groups of artistic and cultural individuals, as well as those that supported the beliefs of Walt Whitman, of which Lilian Mendelssohn, who resided in Montreal was one. Lilian Wetstein corresponded with Horace Traubel and participated in meetings before her marriage to Sam Mendelssohn. She later kept in contact with Horace Traubel’s widow, Anne, as well as his daughter, Gertrude. The collection also contains a small amount of material, primarily Christmas cards, with other members of Traubel’s circle.

Accession B1991-0020 contains correspondence, articles, minutes and addresses documenting the activities of the Ectology Committee of the Department of Zoology and the Passamaquoddy Salmon Associates. Correspondence is among Scott, A.G. Huntsman and Harold H. Harvey.

Accession B2016-0001 contains the personal records of W. Beverley Scott, Professor Emeritus of Zoology at the University of Toronto, former Curator of Fishes at the Royal Ontario Museum, and former Director of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. The records include correspondence, certificates, diaries, travel files, journals and field notes, research files, manuscripts and publications, and drafts of addresses, with associated photographs, slides, x-rays, notes, other related material, and a number of packets of fish scales.

This accession contains approximately 400 photoprints and 200 negatives and strip negatives, along with 41 slides, 48 x-rays, a few postcards, and a number of drawings.

Fonds consists of records documenting the professional and personal life of Prof. Hassanpour, Kurdish-Iranian Marxist scholar and Professor at UofT’s Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. Material reflects key areas of Prof. Hassanpour’s research, most significantly Kurdish history and culture; the history of political movements, grassroots organization, and class struggle in Iran, Iraq and Turkey; and communication theory and sociolinguistics. Material includes correspondence with colleagues and scholars internationally, documentation of research with particular focus on Prof. Hassanpour’s dissertation and his Peasant Movement Project, records relating to conference presentations, interviews, and teaching, as well as his publishing activity.

Prof. Hassanpour was deeply invested in the preservation of Kurdish oral, visual, and textual documentary heritage as a response to the historical state suppression of cultural-political struggle of Kurdish people. Reflected in records throughout the fonds is Prof. Hassanpour’s work in pursuing the establishment of Kurdish Studies as a discipline, his work editing journals related to Kurdistan, and his effort in exposing and circulating books on Kurdish Studies to libraries and research institutions internationally. Prof. Hassanpour also actively collected and preserved Kurdish texts, dailies, and visual materials. This material is included in Series 9 (Reference material) and through bibliographic and audio material held in other repositories at the University of Toronto Libraries (please see the related material note below).

Collection consists of detailed letters written by Kathleen ‘Doy’ Stewart, primarily to her parents, with some letters written to her brothers and friends, while traveling in Europe from October 1928 to August 1929, with her friend Kathleen Sutton. During the trip, Stewart stayed in Paris from October 1928 to March 1929, before visiting the South of France and Italy, and then staying in Heidelberg from May to July 1929. After Heidelberg, Stewart traveled through Germany, Netherlands and Belgium before returning to Paris at the end of August 1929 to journey back to Canada. Collection contains a small amount of letters written by Kathleen Sutton and letters that were written jointly by Kathleen Stewart and Kathleen Sutton. Papers also includes two letters from a subsequent trip, where she visited Romania and Yugoslavia, in 1932.

One-line-a-day farm diaries kept by William Smellie (1836-1919) of Glenelg Township, Ontario. Smellie’s handwritten diaries date from 1883 to 1916, with his earlier diaries dating from 1879-1882, here reproduced in photocopy. Through his daily entries, Smellie offers a glimpse into farm life in Ontario at the turn of the century. He not only documents livestock, crops, and weather on the farm, but also records important events in his family and community. The diaries also include numerous newspaper clippings and loose notes kept by Smellie.

Contains 13 photographs, of various Ukrainian-Canadian groups, events, and organizations from Ontario and Quebec.

Two volumes (holograph journals) containing an unpublished manuscript by Miriam Saville titled: ‘I Wanted to Be a Nurse.’ Includes holograph revisions. Story details Saville’s life, including her diabetes diagnosis and treatment.
Box also contains typed version of manuscript (69 pages). Typed manuscript was prepared by Janet Cartwright and Catherine Caufield (Saville’s nieces) and features a photograph of Miriam Saville.
Miriam Saville was a diabetic patient treated by Dr. Charles Best in the late 1920s/early 1930s when she was about thirteen years old, see mention of Dr. Best (“Dr. Charles”) on page 5 of both the holograph journal and typed version. First chapter of typed manuscript is titled: ‘Diagnosis and Dr. Best.’

This collection contains letters received by William Robert (W.R.) Patterson from his first wife, Fannie Harris, and brothers, Thomas Patterson and Nathaniel Oscar Patterson, primarily pertaining to personal matters and their careers as singers and vocalists in both Canada and the United States. The largest collection of letters, numbering 22, are from N.O. Patterson to W.R. Patterson which includes a description of his travels throughout the United States and Canada with both the Famous Canadian Jubilee Singers and his own group, the Patterson’s Jubilee Quartet and Concert Company. Ephemera from the Old Southland Sextette and the Patterson’s Jubilee Singers exist in the collection in the form of two programmes dated from 1907 and [191-]. The collection also contains a small amount of letters to W.R. Patterson from friends, as well as letters to him and his second wife, Mary, from their sons, Robert and Philip, while they are working as porters at the Hotel London in the late 1920s.

This collection contains two photograph albums belonging to a German couple, Hermann and Emmi Meinhardt, which separately record their wartime experiences. Hermann Meinhardt’s album provides a personalized look at his experiences serving with a flak regiment in the Luftwaffe, which served in France, Austria, Ukraine, Romania and Russia, with photographs focusing on the war-torn landscapes, moments of camaraderie, and battle. Emmi Meinhardt’s album shows the experience of a young mother and her daughter, who were evacuated from Cologne to the Bavarian countryside. Together, both albums demonstrate a unique look at how the war was experienced on the front and at home. This collection also contains a selection of loose photographs belonging to Hermann Meinhardt, which were not included in the album, and date from 1941 to December 1942. Additionally, Hermann Meinhardt’s posthumous medals, including his Iron Cross and his Eastern front medal, were donated along with the photographs. This collection also contains extensive contemporary research on Hermann Meinhardt, his battalion and his military experiences, which was conducted by Inga Kahn, Herman and Emmi Meinhardt’s daughter, her friend, Barbara Tangney, and librarian, Danielle Van Wagner. A book, Vom Train zum Roland: Eine Geschichte der deutschen Flugabwehrtruppe (1988), contains a published account of Meinhardt’s battalion, I./Flak Regt. 4, which provides extensive context to Hermann Meinhardt’s album and photographs.

Fonds contains clippings relating to cricket, religious topics, and contemporary issues, as well as correspondence, newsletters relating to Trinity College and the Anglican Church, and Trinity College memorabilia.

Fonds consists mainly of records related to the production of the musical comedy/operetta Saints Alive! (1949) for which Ronald Bryden (later a theatre critic and academic) wrote the libretto and Keith MacMillan wrote the music during their time at Trinity College. Included are copies of the script, libretto, and score; MacMillan’s scrapbook about the show, with his annotations on the script; lists of cast members; programs and reviews. As well, there is a script and parts of the handwritten music manuscript for another collaboration by MacMillan and Bryden: the one-act musical comedy What – No Crumpets! (1947). The fonds includes other creative writing by MacMillan from his Trinity days.

Personal records of Antonio Franceschetti, Professor Emeritus of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto, consisting of correspondence, certificates, administrative and teaching files, including files on graduate students, documentation of his work with organizations including the Associazione Internazionale per gli Studi di Lingua e Letteratura Italiana (AISLLI), the Canadian Federation of the Humanities, the Canadian Society for Italian Studies (CSIS), and the Dante Society of Toronto, grant applications, manuscripts of articles, books (including a volume on Petrarch that was never published), research notes, addresses, and posters.

The Massey Family records consist primarily of official and personal documents created by Vincent Massey. They reflect his distinguished diplomatic career, including his terms as Canadian ambassador to the United States during the 1920s and as High Commissioner to London during the 1930s and 1940s, along with his lengthy affiliation with the Liberal Party of Canada. Also represented are his years as Governor-General of Canada and as the leader of the Royal Commission on National Development in the Arts, Sciences and Letters. The moral and financial support given by Vincent and Alice Massey to cultural development in Canada, both individually and through the Massey Foundation, is evident in a wealth of documents relating to the fields of education, music, drama and fine arts (including such institutions and organizations as the National Council of Education, Hart House Quartet, Hart House Theatre, the Dominion Drama Festival, and the National Art Gallery). Their support of the University of Toronto is also well documented. In addition to the records of Vincent Massey, some papers of Alice Massey and correspondence of many members of the Grant, Massey and Parkin families are present.

The bulk of the records are found in B1987-0082. There are two other related accessions:

• B1998-0008: Correspondence between Vincent Massey and Sir Henry Newbolt, including a copy of memo on the Constitutional Crisis in 1926.
• B1998-0032: Files of the Board of Syndics (G.F. McFarland, Honorary Treasurer) relating to Hart House Theatre (1929-1945), and Hart House String Quartet (1931-1942); one file on Hart House 50th anniversary (1968-1969).

Accessions include the personal records of Larry Wayne Richards, architect and educator, documenting his personal life with his partner, Frederic Urban, their education and Richards’ professional life, especially his teaching and administrative work at the Nova Scotia Technical College and as Dean of Architecture at the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto. Also documented is his involvement in multiple design projects, both as a working architect and as an advisor. Included is his work as a member of the Physical Planning and Design Committee at the University of Toronto (especially for Graduate House), the restoration of 230 College Street, his extended collaboration with Kin Yeung (Blanc de Chine, WORKshop), and his participation in municipal architectural and design projects. There are extensive files on his work for the Canadian Centre for Architecture, including the Venice Biennales of 1991 and 1996 and as an advisor to the Royal Ontario Museum’s ‘Renaissance ROM’ project (architect, Daniel Libeskind). There are also files of correspondence and related material on many architects, in particular, Frank Gehry.
